Space rock appears to be coming back in a big way, and bands like Brooklyn's White Hills are at the forefront of this movement. Their latest album "Frying on this Rock," (scheduled for release on March 20th) is a riff-heavy tour-de-force of epic psychedelia. The album was recorded by legendary NYC producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Brian Eno, Swans, Herbie Hancock, Boredoms) and features five jam-heavy tracks, with "I Write a Thousand Letters (Pulp on Bone)" clocking in at nearly 12 minues in length. That song presents clever use of distant conversational voices contributing to dreamlike texture as [...]

It was recorded by Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Brian Eno, Swans, Herbie Hancock, Boredoms). Album art and tracklist below... The new effort will be the band's focus at an upcoming NYC date (their only US date as of this posting) on January 24th at Mercury Lounge [...]
What can we say about Hawkwind? Certinaly nothing describes their prime-era better than Julian Copes words - "They were a collection of disreputable star rats fuelled by a battery of hallucinogenic influences and united only by an incorrigible sense of psi-powered, pre-1976 cosmic punk rock attitude broken off and gobbled as though it was their sole means of sustenance while playing riffs into

Heycoolkid!'s 100 Best Songs Of 2011 (41-55) . . 55. Middle Brother - "Me, Me, Me" What is there not to love when combining key elements of Delta Spirits, Deer Tick, and Dawes? "Me, Me, Me" is an indie honky-tonk set on fire. Every element from the Jerry Lee Lewis style piano to the Lynard [...]

It seems that the real cool kids on the blog don't do end of year lists. Well we like them and hope that those miserable sods slip in their paper shoes and find other people's dirty hankies in their bobble hats. Those artists who will be sobbing into their pillows tonight because they didn't quite make it onto our list include blistering aural adventures by: Wooden Shjips, Cave, Dead Skeletons, Eat Lights Become Lights, The Field, Moon Duo, Blanck Mass, Hills, Benjamin Shaw (sorry, Jamie), Gruff Rhys, Dels, White Denim, King Creosote & John Hopkins (robbed!), and Mike [...]

For the uninitiated, Heads on Fire is the perfect place to begin your journey into the endless galaxies of psychedelic rock. Heads on Fire was the second album from space rock overlords White Hills. Long out of print, it's been recently reissued on CD via the band's original label, Rocket Recordings. White Hills have since gone on to record a number of acclaimed releases for label Thrill Jockey--all of which are well worth listening to--but Heads on Fire takes us back to when the band was taking its first steps into the chimerical void. Drifting along...

DOWNLOAD: Pontiak - "Lions of Least" (MP3) White Hills at Terminal 5 ( more by BBG ) " White Hills ' sound has changed a bit compared to its catalog, particularly on the two songs enhanced by Oneida's Kid Millions ' drums. Hawkwind's big riffs-in-space sound remains an obvious influence, though at different moments the band veers harshly into abstract Kraut electronics, or, as on "No Other Way," approaches stoner rock with a bass line identical to one on Sleep 's Holy Mountain . As [...]
• Now, I'm all for spicy food, but 200-times hotter than jalapenos? I don't know if it's really worth the intestinal discomfort, especially when one is 8,000 miles from home. Still, Indian ghost chilies sound pretty awesome! More so than the touristy sights I think I'm excited to eat some local street food in Jaipur, [...]

New Discovery By Nick Parker When I first really became obsessive about music, it was listening to the muddy and dissonant sound of Dinosaur Jr 's 1988 album " Bug ." Not only did that record swallow me whole every time I played it, letting me explore something confusing and fraught but still somehow welcoming, but it made the teenage me feel tough and eccentrically [...]

UPDATE: Now completely sold out from Thrill Jockey and Aquarius. Despite just being released last week, White Hills latest effort, the "Measured Energy" 73 is already sold most places, including from Irish label Trensmat Records , who released the disc. Thrill Jockey have a few still available here for $6, as do Aquarius records , but we don't imagine they'll last long. Pressed on translucent purple vinyl, the disc also includes a download of 5 extra songs and 2 videos. Listen to a clip from the track "Measured [...]
For more than five years, White Hills have been spreading their subversive space-rock gospel through ear splitting psychedelic live shows and numerous guitar melting releases.
In the lead up to Supersonic Festival , which takes place the 21-23 of October in Birmingham, we're going to be bringing you some Q&As with some of our favourite acts set to take grace the Custard Factory. We speak to the "ear-blistering space rock" band about the festival, who they're looking forward to seeing, festival collaborations and H-p1. [...]
