This past June Greenpoint and Williamsburg held the second annual L Magazine Northside Festival . Last year seemed to showcase local Brooklyn and New Jersey based acts while Year two brought some slightly bigger nationally known acts. Year two showed progress from year one with better organization, but there was one problem on Friday when all the venues "were at capacity for badge holders" and a lot of Northside badge holders were left on North 6th wondering what their pass was good for (as the festival gets bigger and bigger I'm sure that [...]

Before beginning this post, I would like to direct your attention to this week's Swan Fungus User Poll. The amazing folks at Temporary Residence Limited have once again gone above and beyond in donating some giveaways to this website that can be passed along to the public. This week's poll asks "What is your favorite Mono record." I know your options don't include sit like the Quip magazine promo CD, the Gone collection (it was a compilation!), or the 2008 DVD The Sky Remains The Same As Ever , but almost every other release is accounted for. [...]

We've been finishing up the details of this all day but it seems that all is set and ready to go for RSTB's showcase at Northside in NYC. Our showcase will be on Saturday, June 26th in the back room at Public Assembly . Doors will open at 5:30 and bands will start at 6. We'll have a great triple bill of music from Sore Eros , Viernes and NY's own White Hills . Be sure to stop by and say hi and with our sweet midday/evening time slot it's a good stopgap between those [...]

Tonight, for the second time in three years, White Hills took to the airwaves and rocked the Evan "Funk" Davies show on Jersey's own free-form radio station WFMU. Davies' is one of the shows I used to make it my business to hear every week when I was growing up in the Garden State. He, along with Fabio, Bryce and Brian Turner were responsible for a great portion of my musical education. The last time White Hills recorded a session for the show was in April of 2007, just before I moved to LA. Ah, how times have changed. I [...]

White Hills White Hills ( Thrill Jockey ) White Hills blast big psychedelic blues-rock that expands and expands and expands and expands, surfing the ever-rippling and rising wake of the silver machine, cresting up over Monster Magnet and rolling up into a tsunami, seven songs, sixty minutes, sprawling guitar riffs and treading bass, drumbeats collecting fill after fill upon fill and fill, one wave of song ebbing only long enough for the next to crash down upon it. Plus, on "Let the Right One [...]

White is the new black, right? No, I'm not making some dipshit John Mayer joke here. The aughts celebrated the likes of Black Dice, Black Lips, Black Angels, and the Black Eyed Peas, and this new decade is summoning White Fences, White Rainbow, and the mighty White Hills . See what I mean? I initially slept on their debut Heads on Fire , and I've taken measures to correct that by meditatin' my omelet on their recently released self-titled record while burning incense purchased directly from Persian medicine men. It's good on both counts. White Hills [...]
I used to get a lot of my news items from Swan Fungus friend and mysterian Hornet Montana. Now he's started his own blog! Check out Hornet Montana for crazy stories about secret society meetings, conspiracy theories and sci-fi religious zealotry. He's only posted a handful of times so far, but I've laughed at least once per post! Considering how little I enjoy reading blogs, I'd say that's pretty impressive. In anticipation of his newfound venture, I believe he sent me several e-mails this week pointing me to "newsworthy" stories to which I should direct my readers. Let [...]

White Hills - Dead [extrait de l'album White Hills ]
The fuzzed-out psychedelia of New York's White Hills is not for the faint of heart. Recorded in just three days, their self-titled LP (on Thrill Jockey) will burn your mind with electrified labyrinths of screeching desolation, Hawkwind-esque riffs and narcotic rhythms. First single "Dead" is the aural equivalent of the scene in Indiana Jones And [...]

Unexpected day trip alert! I drove out to Covina today to see if their IKEA had the computer desk I've been looking for since last week. It was looking like a boring early afternoon drive until I pulled off the 210-East onto North Azusa Avenue (Route-39) and noticed a small sign with an arrow pointing eastward that read, "San Dimas 4 Miles." I knew at that moment my day was going to get a lot more excellent! There were no desks at IKEA. There won't be any in the style I need for another week at any locations [...]
Monday: White Hills + Pontiak @ Cake Shop 8pm $7 [ info ] There are worse fates in life than to go underrated for most of your career, but when you have worked as hard and are as talented as these two bands that just shouldn't be the case. Yet for some reason both White Hills and Pontiak seem to fly way under the radar and that's probably why you can still see them at venues like Cake Shop. That may be good for music loving fanatics like you and me, but hopefully these [...]
