Amen Dunes is one of those bands that keeps popping up on critics' recommended artists lists. They have certainly generated a large amount of critical praise and press within the indie-psych rock community. People can't seem to shut up about them (a good problem for a band to have!) Their Latest album "Through Donkey Jaw" got a 7.5 rating on Pitchfork, so that's saying something. Amen Dunes will be playing at Strange Matter on Saturday, May 19 with White Laces , Canary Oh Canary and [...]
Just a few shows to see this weekend. On Saturday, April 7, electro-pop duo Breathe Carolina hits the National with The Ready Set . Their single "Blackout" has been grabbing media attention left and right. Expect one big dance party. ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ___________________ Also on Saturday, Billy the Kid and the Southside Boys will be performing at at Poe's Pub. Openers will be Jon and Kevin from Horsehead with their acoustic side project the Dimmer Twins and kicking things off [...]
I saw first saw Nelly Kate perfrom at the Listening Room last year and was blown away by her music. Her layered sounds and voice grabbed your attention like no other and I've been looking forward to seeing what else she has up her sleeve. Her album "ISH ISH," primarily an analog record release, is set to be released this week, and from what I've heard already, it's going to be one the best albums in Richmond this year. The first 300 copies of the album will be pressed on [...]
Missed Black Girls ' CD release show for "Hell Dragon" at the Camel? You missed one incredible show, but I don't have to tell you that. Everyone in Richmond should know by now that the glam rock dance fun of Black Girls is one of the best things to come out of the local music scene. I've been writing about Black Girls a lot this week (and rightfully so). There's a lot of love for the band this week on River City Rapids and Style Weekly . The [...]

>> Noise pop continues to thrive in Richmond, and scene stand-outs White Laces seem poised for a break-out 2012. The quartet has an ambitious slate of releases in the offing, the first of which is a cracking split single with sometimes-tourmates Arches , who operate out of our beloved Philadelphia. Richmond-based label Worthless Junk is taking orders now for "Dissolve Into Color" b/w "Late Last Night" right here . While the official release date is Jan. 24 (a certain blogger's birthday...), you can hear White Laces ' A-side via the Soundcloud embed below and watch [...]
The Richmond music scene had so many incredible albums come out this year, there was no way I could lump them in with national releases and then have to narrow them down to 10 (there are actually 11 on this list). And since my blog is primarily local, I made a completely separate list - and even that was still hard to do. Here are the best albums Richmond musicians had to offer for 2011. COREY MCLEMORE - THE DEFINITION There's nothing really more I can say about the Richmond-turned-Brooklyn rapper and his [...]

Photo: Jens Kofoed-Pihl In less than a week, three of RVA's music venues have been shut down. Earlier this week, Grandpa Eddie's closed its doors suddenly and without warning . Grandpa Eddie's hosted many country, bluegrass and cover bands and was a nice spot to see live music in the West End - which are hard to come by out in the suburbs. On top of that, local underground venue The Hospital had its location revealed to the public and apparently was raided by police. The Hospital's actual location was never [...]
The other night, my friends in White Laces played a show at Rivermont Pizza in Lynchburg, Va. Apparently the band was "too loud" for the venue, because the owner, in a total middle school girl move, posted this event on Facebook apologizing to customers for White Laces "ruining" the evening. From Nate Hall, the owner: i would like to apologize for the extreme level at which the band "white laces" preformed last night at rivermont pizza. i'm not sure why bands who are on labels and play regularly can't figure [...]

Footage: White Laces' Insidious "Hands In Mexico"
Rising, Richmond-based noise rockers White Laces carved out some time from a very busy summer of touring and recording to shoot the video above for its recent digital single, and the video is a stunner. No surprise, considering the dudes who shot it were largely the same dudes who put together erstwhile scenemates (now stationed in Portland) Lubec 's terrific "Cherry Adair" clip we raved about here in January. Anyway, early last month we dubbed "Hands In Mexico" "...the catchiest song White Laces has recorded to date; the song is particularly [...]
