White Russia's alt-rock/electronic debut is irritatingly catchy at times, due mostly to Marina Elderton's vocals, but overall just sounds a bit too familiar. Music Player (reviews): [...]

White Russia - 'O Jersusalem' (UK Release: 28 Nov '11) // Words: Jack Thomson I was first introduced to White Russia , an alternative electronic duo from London, in the early part of 2010. Otherwise known as Benjamin Bufton and Marina Elderton , and combining Elderton's haunting ethereal vocals with Bufton's fuzzy winding industrial production, White Russia 's sound represents a crossroad between something organic and something mechanical. Having only released two videos thus far, 'O Jerusalem' [...]
white russia - "well do you" (download) White Russia is my new favorite "old" band. I find out about them via the newly-released German Punk & Wave 1978-1984, Vol 1 box set. They stood out the most to me, and appealed to my taste in such bands as The Buzzcocks and Gang Of Four . It looks as though they only released two albums, one in 1981 and one in 1982. They're worth looking into more if [...]

[originally posted - August 2010] I sometimes like to compare The Mahogany Blog to a butchers, a very picky butchers at that. We're lucky enough to be on the receiving end of some great music from around the world and we wait patiently for the choice cuts to come into us. That may mean that a few days go past with no posts and that's simply because we don't post anything that doesn't make our ears or eyes twitch. Today, one such artist defines 'choice cut' and has got us [...]

The two-piece White Russia from South London creates dark and melancholic electronica with influences from names such as Björk and The Knife, while I myself can't help drawing parallels to the Norwegian dark pop/electronic duo Thelma & Clyde (whom, by the way, just released their debut album ). Take a listen to a couple of tracks due to their upcoming release below, featuring Marina's beautiful and pure vocals meeting drowsy, slightly darkwave-inspired beats. Don't forget to check out their music video for Charmless State (directed by Lee Mangan) — [...]
From London, comes White Russia or Marina Elderton and Benjamin Bufton with this headtwisting tune 'Charmless State'. Listen out for more tunes on Soundcloud .
White Russia 's new song is like walking around a demented house party. Each room reveals new horrors: grisly bodies moving like machinery, chattering ghosts, slavering prostitutes shooting up, girls crying... As you hurry on, a voice uncannily like Bjork's sounds hypnotically overhead, and secretly you rather like being in this terrible place. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Marina Elderton's vocals is like a cross between Bjork and Ellie Goulding . It's the kind of voice Simon Cowell will label as "on the money". Marina is the singer from London's White Russia , an electronic project she does with Ben Bufton. These two mix electronica with elements of dubstep into their sound palate, with the vocals elevating the athmosphere in the tracks. Not an easy feat and definitely not aiming to please. Which is great in one sense, on the other, it leaves me quite uncomfortable. I found the lyrics to be political although [...]

With little biographical information on their Myspace page , London's White Russia are one of those acts that sit back and let their music tell the story to you. Though a bold move, when your sound is as densely layered and enigmatically structured as that evidenced on lead track Charmless State - video below - you're bound to have the confidence to keep extraneous chatter to a bare minimum . [...]

Hailing from London, England, White Russia are the duo Marina Elderton and Benjamin Bufton (the legitimacy of his last name to be determined). The first time I gave them a listen was just over a week ago when I was sent their Soundcloud page, and first song "Solution" reeled me in instantly with Marina's ghostly vocals layered over foreboding synths and reverberating drums, something akin to a cross between an English Bjork, and Elizabeth Fraser's haunting distain on Massive Attack's "Teardrop". As you make your way through their handful of songs you find yourself becoming absorbed in the [...]
It appears I've struck gold with an abundance of nuggets to spare in my inbox lately! Some really exciting new bands have made themselves know to me and for that I'm truly honoured and thankful. The latest goldmine I've come across is a South London duo called White Russia. Tunes that tug at the heartstrings and threaten to take the soul just for kicks. Beautiful vocals reminiscent of a Bjork or a Beth Gibbons. Upon first listen to Charmless State, I must say that I felt chills. A soft serenade lulling the listener into eventual surrender before the [...]

White Russia are an alternative/electronic duo (Marina Elderton and Benjamin Bufton) from South London who recently had their video for 'Charmless State' (directed by Lee Mangan) selected for the London Independent Film Festival 2010 music video category. We've taken a listen to their tracks available on their SoundCloud page, along with their video of' course and we must say we really liked their style. Dark, crisp sound with Marina's unique voice dominating the tracks and reminding a bit of the good old days of Portishead. We also love their Russian Constructivist style on Myspace, so we'll make sure [...]

back in the middle of last year i came across an outfit called White Russia . harnessing the power of industrial electronic beats, combined with a special sprinkle of 'pop' and a dab of Bjork , singer Marina Elderton also adds her unique and powerful voice to the mixture to create amazing, fresh slices of experimental pop music that sound like no other. after being lucky enough to see her in rehearsals, i know for a fact that the White Russia live show is set to be something spectacular, watch out for [...]
