I know 2009 is going to be pretty big for 'electro' and i use that term quite loosely as the electro 'scene' can't easily be pinned down to a certain artist or sound that easily any more. The stuff that i like, and is being played around alot is taking samples from all different music styles including old school acid house, rock, techno, dubstep, reggae, bassline to name just a few. 2009 will see us being more exposed to these 'hybrid-tunes' that incorporate the best bits from some or all of these styles. Im not a member of [...]
As the first week of 2009 arrives, more and more "hits" have been showin up lately. I guess the New Year's resolution this year was to crank out the tunes! Thought this would be usefu l, En joy. Blake Miller (Weird Science, Moving Units) and Le Castle Vania (So Sweet badass) [...]

Via Milk As another year comes to it's close it seems appropriate now to collect my favorite songs of 2008. Making these types of lists always proves to be much more of an arduous task than I plan for. It's not only necessary to look back throughout the whole year, but to estimate what might come next and figure who is breaking molds and setting standards. Most of these songs are remixes because that's what I like. Ultimately, all of these songs are here for the same reason. Because it is as [...]
I barely watch music videos to be honest, but of the few I've seen I guess they've been good enough to warrant some consideration as the top videos of the year. Anyway here are my choices but I do warn that I probably haven't seen a lot of good ones. 5. Old Prince Still Lives At Home by Shad What more can I say about this video? Instead of Fresh Prince of Bel Air, you have the Old Prince of London, Ontario. It's a funny parody that comes from a simple idea [...]

Joe Williams of White Williams Cleveland's "happy hardcore" threesome White Williams opened for Vampire Weekend at the Glass House last Tuesday, September 16. Joe Williams fronts the band, but information is sketchy about the other band members. This might be Cale Parks In a live setting, this group earns their hardcore self-description by sounding much messier and louder and more prog-rock than recorded versions would lead one to think. Williams [...]

All Tomorrow's Parties New York is well underway. For those of you (like me) who are sad you couldn't make it upstate for the weekend to catch the incredible lineup, you can still listen to many of the bands performances via a live stream at WFMU.org . Expected highlights of the weekend include Harmonia, Low, Yo La Tengo, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dinosaur Jr., Mogwai, Fuck Buttons, and of course My Bloody Valentine (who also play Roseland Ballroom in NYC on Monday night). In related news... Harmonia , the German krautrock supergroup [...]
photo by Matthew Craig 1. Action Biker - "Refridgerator" (mp3) "I can't sleep tonight/ The fridge is making noise/ But I don't want to make it stop/ It goes on and on and on and on." Gothenburg-based Action Biker is Sarah Nyberg Pergament. Wait, the 8-bit video game? Yes, sadly another 8-bit allusion. Be that as it may, Pergament utilizes glumly curious expressions, which are often laden with a quaint timbre. "Refridgerator" brings to mind the playful and breathy melodies of Saint Etienne. Each breeze of resonant synthesizers waft her studiedly [...]

Not since Iron & Wine came to town has Headliner's been as packed as it was for Vampire Weekend's first performance in Louisville. The crowd was considerably younger as you would expect; filled with teenage girls hoping to make eye contact with the guys from New York. Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that Vampire Weekend has taken the world by storm, gracing the cover of every music mag, playing every late show, having their songs played in commercials and in TV shows and selling out show after show. I must admit, their sound [...]
You may have been merely stumbling around in the mud at Bestival ... or just strolling through the streets of london ... or staring at the facing wall of a random urinal... only to be confronted with yet another Trouble Vision sticker. They're everywhere. Well, soon you can peel those pesky stickers off your back and finally head down to the huge debut night of Trouble Vision . Pelski's teamed up with the Intothefray crew to endorse a night whose line-up is jam-packed with YouCanCallMePelski favourites: [...]

Vampire Weekend, with White Williams September 11, 2008 Liberty Hall Better than : Peter Gabriel (post-Genesis) By RICHARD GINTOWT For the past few years, I’ve had a theory that high school kids are listening to worse and worse music. Mostly it’s because of the emo crap they’re spoonfed by Hot Topic and Warped Tour, but also because I haven’t heard as many original young bands in the Lawrence area as when I was in college. I could be totally wrong about this, but it’s fun to conjecture about, and not entirely without [...]

Here's an interview I did with White Williams for the LEO Weekly the other night. They put on an excellent show opening for Vampire Weekend, and I spoke very highly of their debut album, Smoke, here on Critical Acclaim last fall. Among other things, they discuss the meaning behind the title of their album, their recent show with Nine Inch Nails in Lexington, as well as some of the new material they're currently working on. LEO: Welcome to Louisville. There are some new members in the band now. Do you all want to introduce yourselves and tell [...]

Vampire Weekend - White Sky I had been highly anticipating this show since I bought my tickets back in August, but my excitement was amplified a notch when I discovered it was sold out a just a few weeks ago. Vampire Weekend came to Kentucky last November and played a free concert to 200 people in a warehouse in Lexington. Granted, the venue was not ideal, as there was little to no heating on that cold, rainy Sunday night, but the show was excellent. The turnout, [...]

Packed house, tight sets (tight pants, too), plenty of white baseball caps and unironic polo shirts. White Williams: Vampire Weekend:

Opening tonight's Vampire Weekend show at the Pageant -- did everyone read our pro/con piece in the paper? You should! -- is White Williams . Currently, he's an electro whizz incorporating gothy new-wave, modern disco and '80s retro beats. But I once knew him as Joey Williams, a grade schooler who hung out with my little brother. You see, he and I grew up in the same small Cleveland suburb and went to the same high school. In fact, here's his freshman year in high school photo, [...]
I just found out earlier today that I'm going to be seeing Vampire Weekend and White Williams at Headliners... tonight! So I'm scrambling to make plans, since I'll be without a motorized vehicle for the evening. I would just ride my bike, but 12 miles there and back — after my three-mile round trip for work — is too much for me today. Plus I'm generally lazy. And yeah, I know everyone will be there to see the we're-from-an-Ivy-League-schoo l-which-means-we're-witty-and- smart-so-you-have-to-adore-us schtick of Vampire Weekend, but I'm looking [...]
from party boy ang Wow! Got them finally...got them bars! Not the bars that you and your friends are used to, but the bars that suddenly become a necessity to many. I work at an unusual place, under unusual circumstances. When faced with extraordinary experiences one can only sit back time to time and write down his thoughts. I recall staring out into the night through dusty curtains from my rolling chair behind the desk. "F.D. duties" we call them. Front Desk labor. The labor that I was enduring was mental, and [...]

pic: retrodiva88 hmmmm the start of a new month and a start of a new season. so im finding myself in an autumn mood at the moment. you know, im ready for the leaves to go brown and fall. im ready to start looking around for coats and scarves in preparance for a change in weather. im ready for when it gets dark earlier. what about the summer...dont i miss it? well did we even get a summer here? (sigh!) but all this autumn talk puts me in the mood for some metronomy [...]
Yesterday, I was "In the Club" with White Williams. Alfred University's Knight Club to be exact. After enduring a pretty generic rock band playing pretty generic rock songs and freshmen who had a bit too much energy and a bit too much inclination to mosh to absolutely anything, White Williams arrived. With very few lights on the small Knight Club stage, it was hard to see, but he looked particularly elfish with his button up shirt and rolled up dress pants. He and his two cohorts began what seemed like a sound check at first before launching into a sonic [...]
So here we go again. School's back. Traffic is nice and thick again. Life in the daily grind. Honk Honk Punch. But doesn't all that crap make Friday's even better? That's what I'm banking on. Here it goes... mp3: Justice - Valentine (Vega Remix) mp3: Muscles - The Lake (White Williams Sludge Remix) mp3: New Young Pony Club - F.A.N. (Yo Majesty Remix) mp3: Santogold - I'm A Lady (Diplo Mix ft. Amanda Blank)

The good people at Toyota have hooked us up with a big Australian indie label , full of dance remixes! Yes that's right, Scion Audio Visual is at it again appealing to Generation Y, embracing electronic dance music and creating vehicles with easy mod skirt kits and so on. Sneaky fucking Japanese... but I digress (incoming promo-piece alert). 'Rio' is a highlight of the recent album by The Bumblebeez , "Prince Umberto & The Sister of Ill" and it’s given a slamming dancefloor beef up by East London’s Boy 8-Bit. Boy 8-Bit [...]
