I've been itchin' for a while to put together a nice little collection of my old school favorites. In the mid 80's, I was in my mid teens when I became obsessed with a. Prince and b. the rap/hip-hop of the day. These are some of the songs I came of age with. Now, some of my favorites included some not so PG material. In fact, some of it was downright foul. Too Short's "Freaky Tales" is the biggest offender here, followed closely by that 2 Live Crew classic "We Want Some P***y". But hey, I [...]

"In the late 1970's, synthesizers were not shiny and sleek. They were salvaged from dumpsters outside university music departments, and soldered together from mail-order kits. When the startling new sounds they produced were sprung upon audiences, they upset punks and rock purists alike. Previously the exclusive province of superstars, academics, and seasoned studio pros, electronic music was now seized upon by a generation of young rebels. And leading the charge was Thomas Dolby." -Kurt B. Reighley in the liner notes for The Sole Inhabitant [...]

Hello. This my latest track selection. Enjoy this crap. Let's start with Refused. Listening to this band in the context of their time reveals how amazing their music is. A whole heapload of bands today are basically ripping off what Refused did ten years ago. They are broken up now, and they're last days are chronicled in the documentary "Refused Are Fuckin' Dead." Although it is somewhat

Whodini, "The Haunted House of Rock" ( YSI link ) Whodini, "Underground" ( YSI link ) Whodini, "Magic's Wand" ( YSI link ) Whodini, "Rap Machine" ( YSI link ) Oh my G-d, I think I'm having a rap attack! It's been too long since I did any hip-hop here. I could give a whole spiel about why this is and masculinity and women and my own disgust with what I was hearing, but that would be boring. I'll just say that [...]

I'm going light on the Halloween tunes this year. So, here's my contribution: Haunted House of Rock - Whodini Music MP3 music
I don't mind telling you I had nothing for Old School Mondays this week. Last week didn't generate any ideas for me, and I was away most of the weekend, so I wasn't sure what to post. But seeing as how Halloween is on Wednesday, I figured I'd post some songs in that vein. Dana Dane's Nightmares came immediately to mind, but I still haven't recovered from finding out his accent was fake , so I passed. The two other songs that came to mind are Whodini's Freaks Come Out At Night and the Geto [...]
I suppose I should be talking about the Radiohead album. I don't know about the music, but it's pretty interesting how they're delivering it. In case you don't know, you can download the album from 10th October, and basically pay however much you want for it. Which may be nothing, if that's what you want. Alternatively there's a pretty lush looking vinyl & CD box set that'll set you back 40
Baltimore's annual Artscape summer festival exists in your town in a smaller form; you already know it well - reunited soul groups crooning midday to boomers feeding funnel cake to tots on their knees at picnic benches with industrial strength red and white tablecloths. America, fuck yeah. But a few new festivals spawned last year in Charm City to serve the tattooed, weird and beautiful masses: Altskape, a showcase for Artscape's beloved but banished art car exhibit, and Whartscape, two sweaty nights of spazzcore madness at Wham City's battered Copycat warehouse. [...]
