Last week, I was scheduled for an interview with WHY? mastermind and Anticon -co-founder Yoni Wolf for 4pm, but after giving him a call and leaving a voicemail ( hi, this is Jonathan Wolf, please leave a message ), I was a bit worried that the interview wasn't going to happen. Luckily, around thirty-or-so minutes later, I get a call, and everything resumes as planned. Check out the interview below, and be sure to go see the band as they embark on a pretty massive North [...]

If you've followed the blog for a bit, you're most likely familiar with DREAMTIGER, the brainchild of Liz Wolf (who is now a full-time member of Anticon's WHY? band as well). She just sent me the final version of her 11-track, self-titled record this week and merely a minute and a half into the opening track, I had goosebumps. It's that good. This whole record is something that I see ending up on many peoples' year-end lists come December. You can catch her solo opening act before the WHY? shows on their tour that starts next Friday. You can see [...]
With their baroque/indie/folk leanings and sardonic rap-like witticism is safe to say WHY? are an oddity in today's musical landscape. The much awaited 'Mumps, Etc' is a first outing since the delicate instrumentations of 20092s excellent 'Eskimo Snow'. While that album remains an absolute pleasure it did signal a slight detour from the sound we had associated with [...] The post Cougar Microbes Top Albums of 2012: WHY? - Mumps, Etc appeared first on Cougar Microbes .

Insanely uplifting afro-footwork is coming out of DJ Paypal , a mysterious producer from the "dirty south internet" who was recently featured in LuckyMe 's radio show for RinseFM . The first three tracks on his Why EP are particularly fantastic, balancing waves of crisp percussion with transposed jazz chords and r&b vocals in enthralling song structures that effortlessly burst with energy. You'll definitely be hearing more form this artist, so download the album for $5 and support his early work.

If you were to have come upon me at any point in 2012 and I happened to have my headphones on, I'd say you would hear an obviously too loud song from one of these albums 7 [maybe] 8 out of 11 times. Here they are, in no particular order. I'm sure I missed a bunch but I like these just the same. Joyce Manor - Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired This album is right around 13 minutes long so you [...]
This is the longest YUNOREVIEW I've ever done. Not sure I'll ever wanna do something like this again, ha! Well, anyway, if a particular artist who released an album, EP, or mixtape earlier this year somehow did not make this list, then you might as well give up hope. I can't review everything-even if the new Taylor Swift album ain't bad. I'll leave it to you to form your own opinions on any releases I have missed. Speaking of opinions, I wouldn't take mine in this video all that seriously. I'm pretty indifferent toward most of the albums [...]

As well as our Top 100 tunes of the year posts over the past five days, each of the MM contributors have put together their own lists. It is the turn of Dr Roddy... This years music has been a many varied kaleidoscope of sounds, moods and timing. I have moved house, set up home with my girlfriend and found myself a new job. Because music is my coping method all of these things have found themselves with their own soundtrack. When I looked back over my playlists of the year all of these songs feature in them [...]
WHY? are an exultation of larks being shot down with a shotgun. Beautiful melodies, being trounced upon with irresistable beats and soulful yet dirty words. WHY? are a band that I think it is impossible to be bored with. Possibly one of the most underrated bands out there. A curious mix of analogue and electronic instruments [...]
We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) These are 50 tracks that delighted, inspired and fascinated us in 2012 and that we think are worthy of remembering long after the year is over. We present them here in highly unscientific ordered list form, with Matt's songs marked with a "-MG" and my choices with a "-TJ" next to them. To better spread the love, we've stuck with the one song per artist rule. Click here to download all the tracks in a zip and subscribe to our Spotify Playlist to stream them all. Enjoy y'all! [...]
