In our continuing celebration of Halloween, we've prepared a Friday Mix Tape chocked full of goodies recorded on this date in history. Some of these tracks come from commercial releases, so be sure to purchase the full album if you like the tracks we used. Let's take a gander at some tricks and treats... We start with the rambunctious Magic Fingers from Frank Zappa's Halloween release. Next, enjoy one of my favorite Phish covers of all-time: Born Under Punches from Live Phish: 10/31/1996 [...]

My apologies for not getting a Cover Wars up last week. I was fighting off what I affectionately refer to as the "Tour Flu" after logging a four-day-weekend full of live music from the likes of Trey Anastasio and Umphrey's McGee. The extra time provided an opportunity for Widespread Panic and The Punch Brothers to duke it out for the title of best cover of Ophelia . Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers ultimately walked away victorious. This week, we look at six renditions of the first [...]

Here we are, finally, less than two weeks away from the 'big day.' Judging by the numbers across the country for early voting, I think it's fair to say that this election will be one for the history books. While I'm excited that so many people are participating, I'm also starting to get sick of it. I'm sick of the hate that we have on each opposing side . I'm sick of the ignorance on either side. I'm sick of receiving stupid, untrue forwards from family members and friends telling me why Obama [...]
From 1997 - 2000 and in 2002 jam veterans Widespread Panic delivered blistering cover-laden Halloween shows in the city of New Orleans. The group finally returns for another Halloween show in New Orleans next Friday. This year, we can all join in the fun via a webcast at WidespreadPanic.com and iClips.net . The show is scheduled to start at 8:15PM local time.

The geeking out piece - this was fun. For me this was a great couple of days in Hidden Track history because it displayed a bit of the community that we've got going on right here inside the blog. We have thousands of people viewing the site everyday but often times well thought-out posts go by without a comment posted. This wasn't one of them, readers were eager to supplement the piece with information. For example, I had no idea The Radiators had logged such a rigorous consistent [...]
After Monday night's seemingly successful Dead reunion, rhythm guitarist Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh are teaming up for a New Year's Eve concert at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. While we're sure there will be plenty of sit-ins, the concert's billed as RatDog and Phil Lesh & Friends with Jackie Greene opening. Tickets for this show, as well as a second concert on New Year's Eve Eve, are available starting Thursday via GDTSTOO and Music Today . The public Ticketmaster onsale takes place on 11/2. [...]

U-Melt ran away with last week's edition when we looked at eight covers of The Boy In The Bubble . U-Melt proves that clever setlist construction goes a long way, as the performance that was selected was in the middle of MMW's Bubblehouse (Boy in the Bubblehouse?). Congrats to U-Melt on their first CW trophy, well it's an imaginary trophy, put it on the mantle. Moving on to this week, we will be taking a look at a tune Robbie Robertson wrote for The Band that was originally released on the [...]

Back in the mid '90s, Irving Plaza became Widespread Panic's home away from home in New York City. Since those heady days, the band's lineup has changed multiple times and the venue is now known as The Fillmore at Irving Plaza. On November 19, the Georgia boys return to their former haunt to rock it once again for an initimate Evening with Widespread Panic to benefit the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation. Well, Ain't Life Grand. JB and his brood will be in town to receive a [...]
The live music universe is a world filled with ebbs and flows of energy; when things get busy, they really get busy and then there will be a down period. Suffice to say that in Chicago, right when that 90 day limit Lollapalooza puts on its performers finishes , October is busy. Everyone is touring. In addition, there have been a number of announcements of late pertaining to New Years Eve. So gathered here is a pretty solid compendium of who's playing where on December 31st. The venue link will get you to ticket information for the mentioned shows. [...]

In 1996, at the tender age of 16, I was a prime target to be taken into the cult of Phish. In my world concerts were for meeting boys, radio was A-OK and my CD collection consisted of The Cranberries, Sarah McLachlan, and The Counting Crows. Then I met Phish Dude, who I'll call Trey (for the sake of anonymity) and life, as I had known it, was changed forever. Trey was older and way cool - with the Phish bootleg tape collection to prove it. Gone was my crooning Sarah. Under Trey's direction she was [...]

While earlier we ranted about one Hall of Fame's bad decision making skills, we want to applaud a different HOF for giving credit where it was completely due. It's my pleasure to welcome Brent Berman, aka the guy who started the Wilson chant , to the Hidden Track mix. Brent's a lifelong friend and he'll be checking in from Athens, GA occasionally. Here's his report on Widespread Panic's induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame... [Photos by Lena Chambless] [...]
Traffic's drummer Jim Capaldi sheds some light on the origin of the song title... [While in Morocco,] Michael J. Pollard and I would sit around writing lyrics all day, talking about Bob Dylan and The Band, thinking up ridiculous plots for the movie. Before I left Morocco, Pollard wrote in my book 'The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys.' For me, it summed him up. He had this tremendous rebel attitude. He walked around in his cowboy boots, his leather jacket. At the time he was a heavy little dude. It seemed to sum [...]
Once again, Jambands.com's news page breaks a story of major interest to jamfans. While Phish and The Dead seem to be gearing up for a return next year, Widespread Panic joins moe. in taking a break from the road in 2009. Here's the scoop on WSP's NYE plans and the planned hiatus... For the first time [...] Once again, Jambands.com's news page breaks a story of major interest to jamfans. The summer concert season has kept the HT gang busy for the last couple of months hitting amphitheaters, clubs, boats and festies in order to catch great live music. Since we haven't seen each other in quite awhile, we thought we'd round up crew to crack open some Sea Hag IPA's for one last summertime cook out and another rousing edition of At The Barbecue - that's bound to ruffle a few feathers. This time around we're going with bands that all your friends love, but [...]

Okay time for another covers post. I've got this thing for covers, I want to see how other groups/artist handle each others music. I think its supposed to be a tribute and more often then not it is. You all love the Doors, admit it, they are always a hidden pleasure. They hit their heights in the late 60's, again in the early 80's, have had a movie made about them and had/have one of the most interesting lead singers of all time, Jim Morrison . [...]

james taylor kind of gets a bad rap...even in that one simpsons episode when homer goes into space & brings that bag of chips with him that end up clogging the instruments & sending the shuttle hurling back towards earth, & mission control brings in taylor to calm down the astronauts with his "unique brand of bittersweet folk rock", but buzz aldrin wants nothing to do with him...well, in the end it's taylor's idea to create a compressor to suck the chips out that ultimately saves the day, so...i guess i don't really have a point, except that [...]
