Da de tre venner Björn Lydén, Nikolaj Thorenfeldt og Søren Christensen i 2004 slog dørene op for den første udgave af Aarhus-festivalen Pop Revo, foregik det i Musikcafeens hyggelige rammer. Blandt de optrædende fandt man flotte navne som legendariske The Clientele , shoegaze-popperne i The Radio Dept. og danske Oh No Ono . Fra og med i morgen spilles der så op til poprevolution for tiende gang, når Pop Revo løber af stablen på spillestederne Voxhall og Atlas. Festivalen har valgt at vende tilbage til rødderne fra 2004 og sprede sig over tre dage. [...]

Frank Yang Objectively speaking, there's not a world of difference between Widowspeak's 2011 self-titled debut or the follow-up Almanac , released in January of this year. You can file them both quite comfortably under "the soundtrack to dreams of dusty country roads", not too far from lazy but not inaccurate reference points Mazzy Star and Cat Power, but something about Almanac grabs me the way that Widowspeak , as much as I dug it , didn't. And it's not something as simple as they're getting [...]

Right before a crazed trip down to Austin for SXSW, we welcomed the friendly folks of Brooklyn band Widowspeak into the recording studio of Alex Sterling in Manhattan. The colorful book-lined walls felt like a natural setting for the group - they came in from the snowy streets, browsed around the collection, and then got straight to recording. Watch their Buzzsession performance of "Perennials" and "Devil Knows" below and snag the free downloads using our Soundcloud player. 'Buzzsessions' is a live session series made by The Wild Honey Pie. With [...]

I hadn't heard of Widowspeak prior to a review that showed a picture of the Almanac's cover. The cover showed the bands protagonists - Molly Hamilton & Robert Earl Thomas in an outdoor setting with a lovely waterfall in the background. My mind immediately drifted to a couple knocking out some twangy numbers full of harmonies. Well, that turned out to be a fortuitous mistake as Widowspeak sound nothing like that. Built around Hamilton's hazy vocals and Thomas's guitar work. Upon seeing them live at SXSW, I tweeted, "the bearded fella in Widowspeak sure knows what to do [...]

Your stellar show selection for Tuesday: ► DWNTWN , the electro-pop duo who won our hearts last year with "See My Eyes" and followed it up with their "Red Room" EP, kicks off a residency at the Central SAPC. Get there early for a new outfit (with at least one familiar face) called the Mercy Beat. Blackbear and Ménage also perform, with Buzz Bands LA spinning in between sets. ► Low visits the Troubadour behind the release of their 10th album, "The Invisible Way." Thalia Zedek opens. ► Widowspeak [...]

Widowspeak "Ballad of the Golden Hour" Yes, yes, I'm a bit late on posting this, but it's been a long time coming. Well, it's been about a week and a half since I heard Widowspeak play it live and was instantly hooked and reeled in by guitarist, Rob Thomas's catchy riffs throughout the song's entirety. We got the chance to interview the Brooklyn-based duo after the show and found they are also incredibly [...]

The haze has lifted. Apollo shifts on his perch. This week has sucked. My top twelve things - or whatever - of Treefort 2013. 1. A heavy shortage of neon, face paint, feathers, glow sticks, and all other things that cause your brain to fucking hurt. Often, these festival accoutrements hinder all good times. Idaho must have banned them statewide. Only one dude was wearing paisley pants, and his name is Seth, and he's a good dude. 2. Ample parking. (Or "How I Learned to Love Having My Mom Drive Me to Bars.") 3. [...]
