Ground Control So maybe some of you heard that Jeff Mangum, that guy who used to be in that one band, played a surprise show of Neutral Milk Hotel tunes to a Brooklyn crowd of about 75 this past weekend ( MP3s or it didn't happen ). And while that's a pretty cool thing in and of itself, not to mention giving those in attendance bragging rights in certain circles for the rest of their lives, that it happened just before word that the Elephant 6 collective of which the Neutral [...]

Well, the temperature has dropped, the snow is out, Christmas ads have been on the telly for at least 3 months, that can mean only one thing... We're in December and the run up to the new year. The time where every man and his dog start to organise things into lists. Surprisingly enough, I am no different and have done just that... So should you be in the midst of putting your Santa list together and looking for inspiration, I'd heartily [...]

2010: it was pretty great! I saw Inception like three times and listened to all the best music I've ever heard. Plus, Rose Quartz went to New York (SEE ABOVE) and hung out with all our new best friends. We also got to witness some of our favourite labels and bands just kill it this year: Olde English Spelling Bee, R.I.P. Society and Chapter put out a billion great records which everyone loved and bands like Street Chant, Big Troubles and way too many others did massive stadium tours of Brazil. Holla! Anyway, here's my top 10 songs of this [...]

![[MP3] High Highs: “Open Season” + “Live In Dreams”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3024671_lg.jpg)
Blame it on the snow or frigid temperatures just beyond my doorstep, but I'm suddenly in the mood for some hot tea, a warm fire, and acoustic music. Luckily, I've had the oh-so-warm sounds of new duo High Highs wrapping my eardrums up better than Snuggie quality earmuffs. It's velvety acoustic music with enough charm and bells to make gloomy winter days a little less gray: [MP3] High Highs - Open Season The melodic duo recently opened for The Radio Dept [...]
Well, it's that time of year again. Even though there are still a few weeks left in the year, we've decided to name our favorite albums of the year. But before we begin, let me go on a little rant about the state of music. It's nothing we haven't heard before but I wanted to say it anyway. Basically, what I'm saying is, there is no possible way for one person to listen to every album that's released, much less give them all a few listens to determine their ability to grow on you as albums [...]

No matter how big a music nerd one believes oneself to be, it's hard to comprehend the amount of music one can pass over, ignore, or flat-out miss in one year. No reasonable human being can be expected to wade through the sea of new record releases unleashed over the course of twelve long months. Wouldn't it be nice if, at the end of the year, some friendly publication compiled all of the year's best music into some sort of list and made said list available to the public? Full disclosure: we did not come up with the [...]
Whether it's the melody or lyrics, the catchiness or repeatability, the party starter or the emotive heart tugger, a song has to make a connection with you. It has to stop your mind whirling for a moment and say -- rather, demand -- "Stop and listen!". Of the hundreds of tracks we posted (and hundreds more we listened to) this year, these were the ones we most connected with. The ones that made us stop and listen every time. A quick note on the rules we followed. Basically, like last year, nearly everything released in the year [...]

I tell ya, this year's just ZOOMED past! A combination of extreme hours at my (old) job , putting on shows in Newcastle , BLOGGING, ultra overseas vacationing and a high-level membership in "chillers delite" meant my attention span has shriveled even further into nothingness. L ife is tough but HONESTLY I get kinda worried about that and not listening to things closely enough etc and the way things are going and shit but it doesn't change the fact that there was a heap of "killer jams" out this year! Also just realized [...]
Despite the things I could say about it in other arenas, 2010 was a pretty fantastic year for music. It's no surprise that I was absent from blogging more this year than ever before, but that hardly means I wasn't listening . My intake of new records this year wasn't all that terribly steep and so I expected to have a fairly easy time getting my favorites together in some semblance of an order—certainly not the case. That is why I decided to forgo a numbering system this year. These are my favorite records of 2010. Most of these [...]
If it's December at You Ain't No Picasso then it's time for Mixmas. Every year I use the holiday season as an excuse to get some of my favorite musicians to contribute a mix centered around a theme of their choosing. They share some of their favorites and we get a little peak into their [...]

Wild Nothing is on to something, if 2010 is any indication. Started as a solo project by Blacksburg, VA's Jack Tatum, Wild Nothing debuted with the album Gemini and got some serious buzz going back in May. That was followed up soon after with the release of last month's Golden Haze EP...which led to full band expansion and an impressive showing at CMJ here in NYC, including an opening spot for Jenny & Jon at Irving Plaza. Fans of The Drums, Twin Shadow, and other [...]

Click here to view the embedded video. Where do i start with the pompadour bearing musical being George Lewis Jr. Aka Twin Shadow Born In Dominican Republic, Now Based In Brooklyn New York, the purity in these tracks is undeniable. These dream pop serenades are a breath of fresh air straight from the 80s. Kind of a cross between Morrissey and the nu shoegaze acts How To Dress Well or Glasser . Brilliant guitar rifts carrying along the crooning of Lewis' silk voice, these [...]
by teepoo People have been sending me a lot of episodes of TV shows asking for the music, this week I chose to do Season 8 Episode 9 of One Tree Hill, because there were a bunch of songs there that multiple people asked about. Feel free to send me your requests for next week's post! When Haley writes to Lucas about Thanksgiving. Wild Nothing- Summer Holiday Sylvia uses a fire extinguisher on the turkey.
