The Great Book of John - Taylor Shaw, founding guitarist of the dearly departed Alabama band Wild Sweet Orange, is the creative captain behind the expanded sound of his band's ambitious sophomore release...the first line of a Hank Williams song gave this darkly spiritual band their moniker // Release : The Great Book of John (August 16, Communicating Vessels) // Sounds like : a dramatic move away from their acoustic-driven debut, TGBOJ tosses dense, crunching guitars and a massive production scope into the mix for these spacious and dramatic new songs...New [...]

Wild Sweet Orange http://www.wildsweetmusic.com/ Again I come across a band and album that I love only to discover that they have broken up already. Wild Sweet Orange, from Alabama, released We Have Cause To Be Uneasy in 2008. They announced their breakup September 2010. when did I discover them? March 30th, 2001. It's a bummer, but that should stop you from becoming a fan. Uneasy is such a great album, that it's worth the disappointment of knowing that there will be no other albums [...]

Wild Sweet Orange were an indie rock band from Homewood, Alabama that disbanded in 2010. Their songs were lyric driven tunes that had the potential to get them into the mainstream, had they not decided to call it quits after just one full length release. Wild Sweet Orange put out The Whale EP in 2007, but it wasn't until the release of their 2008 full length We Have Cause To Be Uneasy that they started to receive recognition for the amazing music they were creating. With a song included on [...]

Allow your mouth to water, because it's Sweets Week . I don't know about you guys, but my family has a series of weird phrases that nobody else in the entire world seems to use anymore. I think a lot of these originated with my paternal grandfather. For example, does anyone you know say, "hold onto your girdles, girls," when driving around particularly harsh curved highway on-ramps? Nope? Didn't think so. One of these phrases is, "sweet as sugar, sweet as sugar." This is one you can say when [...]
What a gorgeous day here in Chicago; it's in the upper 80's with clear blue skies and a cool breeze blowing. Can't be it. Here are a few songs that totally fit the mood today. It's also a good excuse to listen to (and post about) some stuff that's been sitting in my folder of stuff to listen to for almost 2 years now. Slacker, I know... Never Shout Never is the alias used by Christofer Drew Ingle and on this song from The Summer EP he sounds like a [...]
In looking for The Spring Standard video, I started watching other Paste videos. (When I went to SXSW the songs from Paste were my favorites and I should invesitgate it more regularly.) Anyway, I stumbled upon the video for "Ten Dead Dogs" which they also performed on Letterman. But for whatever reason, I kind of liked this one.
It's time again for the 500 Songs for Kids marathon stand at Smith's Olde Bar. The event will start April 29th and run through May 8th with 50 different bands taking the stage every night. It's all covers so you will know the songs and can sing along. You may discover a new favorite local [...]
We all know someone without health insurance-the type who calls wondering if you've got any antibiotics left over from that nasty bout with tonsillitis. A lot of those people are musicians. A few years ago Rock A Mole Productions conducted a yearlong survey that found nearly 96 percent of musicians struggled to secure regular health care. The cruel irony, of course, is that they often play benefits for friends. Over forty-five million people in the U.S. were uninsured in 2007, a number that continues to climb as unemployment rates increase and policies become more costly. [...]

Much as it would be in keeping with the total avoidance of a song that has appeared on Letterman I can't deny myself the pleasure of 'Ten Dead Dogs'. As you'd expect Wild Sweet Orange have also done some time on Grey's Anatomy, the pained delivery is an undeniable fit for slo-mo surgical theatrics. But, for all the strong arguments brought forward by the prosecution it seems the case for the defence is watertight. 'Ten Dead Dogs' is just too pretty and cleverly built to be brushed aside on a whim. And with a bassist called Garret Kelly it would [...]
I'm going to be home in a month. Travelling is brilliant but settling over here long term, an idea that I'd flirted with before leaving Oz, has turned out to be a tad unrealistic, for me anyway. It's a bloody long way to come and it's not been easy being away from my family. Now I've made the decision to return home, I feel a lot more settled and am enjoying the travelling I'm doing even more. Before I go home I'm heading to London, Paris and Tokyo, along with a couple of other little trips. Not a bad effort at all [...]

Via my Twitter, I became aware that Guster was playing an unannounced show on the SMU Campus, so after getting confirmation of the show from none other than Guster themselves, BVaz and I went down to check it out. Guster always puts on great shows (at least the four? times that I have seen them), and this one was no exception. Guster's musicianship, harmonies and presence have gotten so easy for them throughout their seemingly nonstop touring that the performance seems utterly effortless and is really impressive. Find my iPhone photos of Wild Sweet Orange and [...]

I know I touched on this already but thought it would be worth making its own post about in case some late afternoon straggler hops onto our site or sees the auto-tweet later on. Guster is playing an unannounced show tonight on the SMU campus in Dallas on the Clements Lawn. Wild Sweet Orange takes the stage at 8; Guster is on at 9:15. See you there, peeps! ( Map of Campus )

And don't forget to check back in the upcoming weeks for interviews with The Gaslight Anthem, None More Black, The Casting Out and Against Me! DAY 2 Just to get it out of the way from the very beginning, I would like to hereby declare all Day Twos of future Harvest of Hope Fests as [...]

30. Shugo Tokumaru - Exit In the most recent Paste Magazine, the editor had given the a task to one of his writers to listen to Shugo's latest album for four days and document the dreams they had as a result. The reason: His latest album is full of songs he wrote based on recent dreams he had been having. It was a novel factoid I didn't know before, so I dove back into Exit to see for myself what kind of dreams this multi-instrumentalist has in his head. What [...]
Like ( ) Plants And Animals - Parc Avenue At times invoking the likes of Queen, but mostly sticking to chill-out grooves and feel good melodies. Plants and Animals - New Kind of Love Apes & Androids - Blood Moon I tried to listen to this album a good 6 or 7 times this year, and every time I started I would have something else to [...]
The Whigs are a scorching three-piece formed at the University of Georgia. Their album Mission Control possesses an ominous sound and a sinister purpose, with all the right punk and post-punk touchstones represented: Husker Du, Gang of Four, Replacements, Nirvana. Turn it up. The Whigs, "I Got Ideas" Paul Weller is himself a walking rock and roll touchstone, thirty-plus years into a stellar career. His 2008 release, 22 Dreams , is a meandering, pastoral song-suite that shows off his broad range and a strong sense [...]

You Should Know I actually first encountered Birmingham's Wild Sweet Orange at Vinyl Fever in Tampa when my girlfriend bought their EP on a whim. She liked the whale album art and it was only a couple bucks, so we figured what the hey. So, cruising in her surprisingly roomy Toyota Yaris, we gave the EP a spin. I liked what I heard at the time but I hadn't really thought about the band until I noticed that they recently put out a full-length album entitled We Have [...]

Counting Crows at The Wellmont Theatre (10/28/08) Photos : Jon Klemm Well, opening night at the Wellmont Theatre came a little later than expected due to the untimely illness of Counting Crows' lead singer Adam Duritz who was out sick with the flu on Monday, October 27. So, it was with much fanfare, that the Crows (and their tour mates Wild Sweet Orange ) took to the stage on Tuesday, October 28 for the first of a [...]

We loved these guys the last time they came through the area, so if you see a show close to your hometown you might want to check them out. It also does not hurt that they're playing with another great band, Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos. Check the dates after the jump. mp3: Wild Sweet Orange - House Of Regret 10/29 Montclair, NJ Wellmont Theatre 10/30 Montclair, NJ Wellmont Theatre Dates with Margot and the Nuclear So & So's: [...]

Here is a great track off of the debut album from Wild Sweet Orange . I haven't heard much from these indie rocksters from Birmingham, AL. But I fell in love with this track and have heard nothing but good things about their full-length debut from Canvasback Records . So listen to this great track and go check out their cd. Maybe some day I'll have the time to do so myself. Wild Sweet Orange - 10 Dead Dogs
