More and more Canadian EPs. We are stoked that so many of the bands we love offered up their time for this project, whether it was recording a track in a room full of friends or delivering an absolutely crushing cover of one of the best Canadian songs of the year... well, you get the idea that this list is full of goodness. When I started compiling my year end list and trying to rank everything, it became exceedingly clear to me that comparing local Toronto band X to Jay-Z just wasn't going to work. Not that I haven't done that in the past, my top three albums last year were Chad VanGaalen's Soft Airplane , Ketch Harbour Wolves' Dead Calm Horizon , and Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreaks , but it just seemed like this year, there was going to be such a weird grouping of albums that it didn't really make sense [...]

(photo: myspace.com) If you've been reading this blog for awhile, then you're probably aware of how little live music I actually get out there to hear, so it's not often that I mention concerts or review them, let alone use a whole day's post to promote an upcoming show. Still, when it comes to The Wilderness of Manitoba , I'll make an exception. Hymns of Love & Spirits is the kind of album that comes along once in a blue moon: a collection of songs that [...]

Frank Yang In leading up to Friday night's show at Lee's Palace, I'd wondered aloud as to why it had taken The Wooden Sky so long to play a proper hometown show, what with their latest record, the ex If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone having come out all the way back in August. Walking into Lee's, I got my answer - they were building their sets. The stage was breathtakingly decorated with all manner of props and sculptures built of paperback [...]

Lately been very busy with the happenings in the Ottawa music that I haven't done any music picks. This time I will do EP picks since its seems to be a trend with indie musicians releasing them. Tune-Yards - Bird-Droppings This new Digital EP was released on Nov 10th. Two of the songs which were sung live at Pop Montreal (totally amazing set she did at the festival). Best tracks: [...]

BTA receives several emails daily with quality music submissions, unfortunately it's truly impossible to get to them all. This week's edition of Friday Five includes some artist submissions that have tickled my ear. Touring the East coast, J.J. Ipsen dropped off a sample of his album that is in the works. Working with a full band, these tracks come together beautifully. Ipsen's songs have such an interesting structure, making them tough to label and a pleasure to experience on record and especially live. J.J. Ipsen - Helium Balloons Appleton, Wisconsin's [...]

Frank Yang Last Thursday night was spent at The Garrison, the newly - opened west-end venue that'll be home to the final year of Wavelength as well as a plethora of other local music happenings. A fine example of this was this evening's bill, featuring bands with long names from near, far and sorta-near-but-not-that-close: The Wilderness Of Manitoba , Slow Down Molasses and Olenka & The Autumn Lovers . Slow Down Molasses represented the "far", hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and were up first. I'd spent some [...]

[ I originally prepared this for NxEW.ca's artist spotlight section .] Toronto band the Wilderness of Manitoba got their start a year ago, but they're already getting recognized for their lush, melodic, nature-inspired folk songs. The band self-released their 8-song EP, Hy mns of Love and Spirits , back in August. The release celebration was a two-parter: first, a rousing performance in a backyard garage; and then, a week later, a packed Sunday-night affair at indie hotspot Sneaky Dee's. Both events were thrilling for me, and for [...]
What an excellent month for music October was. Here are some of the best songs we posted in the last 31 days (in case you missed them), and as a bonus a few we didn't manage to squeeze in, but wish we had. All are well worth your time and ears, and if you like what you hear, please do go and buy the EPs or albums.Roll on November!Previously posted (check the labels on the left hand side of the

Last night was the first time I'd been to a show in ages. It's one of those things, like going to the gym, you forget how much fun/how good it is for you until you go again. Of course, it helped that all of the bands were excellent. Band no.1 was Slow Down, Molasses (Saskatoon, SK) who had been touring with the headlining Olenka and the Autumn Lovers (London, On) on their trek through Canada's East Coast which, presumably, took them to the Halifax Pop Explosion. They started slow (hah! pun), [...]

Well, it's that time of the year that every Canadian music blogger loves the most: I (Heart) Music 's carefully calculated compiling of The Hottest Bands in Canada . Matthew is the head maestro of that high quality music blog from Ottawa and what he does is he asks several of the country's finest music aficionados (and me) for their personal picks of the 10 hottest bands in Canada. He then takes our respective lists and, using a team of highly respected scientists and mathematicians, puts together the final selections. I was flattered to once again be [...]

MySpace Opening up with the sound of bird noises might be a bit of an over-sell, but forgiveness comes easily when the multi-layered harmonies of Toronto's The Wilderness Of Manitoba arrive and usher in their debut EP, Hymns Of Love And Spirits . Sharing members with Provincial Parks and Key Witness , The Wilderness of Manitoba come with a very clear and direct mandate - to craft gentle, intricate folk songs of the sort that no one seems to make anymore. Of course, that's a mandate [...]

Not in a literal sense of course. We've never been. But in a musical sense. A very musical sense. Then yes indeed. On their record Hymns Of Love And Spirits, which came out in August, The Wilderness Of Manitoba play just the kind of harmonious, sweet sounding, lonely-folk-in-a-cabin music that has become so popular over the past 18 months or so. However, these guys have so much of their own going

First up was The Rural Alberta Advantage and now we're on to The Wilderness of Manitoba . Next up is the Wacky Saskatchewan Disaster in our study of each Canadian province. Anyway, The Wilderness of Manitoba have delivered an EP of stripped down folk that relies on gorgeous three and four piece harmonies to grab your attention. Most of the tunes don't move faster than a snail's pace, allowing a slightly plucked banjo to lead the way. What it lacks in speed, it makes up for in substance. One of the standout tunes is "Crow's [...]

Who : Wilderness of Manitoba . What : For fans of bands like Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes , here's Canada's Wilderness of Manitoba . Hymns Of Love & Spirits is their new EP and was born from drinking tea and bouncing minimalist arrangements and layered vocals off the walls on their basement on Delaware Ave in Toronto. Very lush and dreamy. Song : Bluebirds .

(photo: myspace.com) The argument can be made that nothing is new anymore. TV shows are being turned into Broadway musicals, Broadway musicals are being turned into movies, and movies are turning into music videos, and music videos are turning into commercials, while commercials are turning into TV shows. Shit, I can't believe I actually came full-circle like that! So having said that, I know full well that the argument can (and probably will) be made that Toronto's The Wilderness of Manitoba don't sound like anything new. The most [...]
Move over Rural Alberta Advantage, we have another Toronto band named after a part of Canada they don't live in. Meet The Wilderness of Manitoba. This Toronto 5-piece plays melodic, ghostly folk reminiscent of the much ballyhooed Fleet Foxes. Their new EP, Hymns of Love and Spirits definitely conveys the feeling of isolation that the vast Canadian frontier instills in us. Check them out if

Last fall, Nov. 3 to be exact, I reviewed an EP called Iron Ponies by Toronto band Provincial Parks . It was an album that had gorgeous harmonies, catchy choruses, and an aesthetic that said to me, if these guys catch a few breaks they are going to be the next John Mayer (in group form). Of course, that didn't happen... What did happen, according to the guys at herohill , was the passing of Will Whitwham's mother and the formation of the Wilderness of Manitoba . [...]
