I did a number of posts this year on an unassuming record by Colin McCann, guitarist for Wilderness . The Lord Dog Bird is a solo effort, done by McCann on his home four-track while Wilderness was on extended hiatus. It's a slightly drony, atmospheric record, and one that J. Catbird nailed pretty accurately when she walked into the room and observed, "this sounds a bit like Peter Gabriel singing with Wolf Parade." I wasn't originally planning to do yet another post on this record, but after seeing this note [...]
I'm kind of picky about what I'll be attending this week. It looks as though Subtle at the Independent has my attention so far. However seeing Audrye Sessions and Cold War Kids would be nice. Too bad I have this full time job I have to keep up with. Anyway, if you're going to the KITS LIVE 105's NSSN 08 or the Pre-Party show (click the picture for tickets), try to make the local band showcase and check out Picture Atlantic and Dizzy Balloon at the ol' Cafe du Nord. [...]

It's been a little quiet around here because I'm OTP at the beach for the week, but I've got some holiday posts coming soon. As 2008 draws to a close, it is time to put together my end of year lists. From the beginning, Ohmpark was primarily a music research project for myself, and these lists are the final culmination of that research. I strongly urge all of my readers to tell me the albums from this year that you love that I might not have covered because I want my lists to be as comprehensive as possible. Feel free [...]

Wilderness return from a two-year hiatus with a few incremental shifts, including slower tempos, starker arrangements, and more emphasis on the band's superb rhythm section. read more

"Chinese Whisperers" by Wilderness which clocks in at 8:07. Whisperers, i.e. those who whisper. They just seem so conspiratorial, the way they hiss each hushed bulletin without proof, confidence, or even the dramatic flair necessary to deliver a good old-fashioned knockout punch. Whisperers are usually not to be trusted. If their inaudible conspiracies were facts, they wouldn't have to whisper, right? Unless of course, these whisperers all started whispering the same thing. Now that would be interesting, like something out of a horror movie, or at the very least the scene in [...]
Who: Wilderness + San Serac Where: Cake Shop When: 9pm Cost: $7 What to Expect: Considering for a second the vast array of sounds found eminanting from the Baltimore scenes these days, it's a bit difficult to sometimes remember that Wilderness is a part of that area at all. Their post-punk ways are pretty standard and samey compared to some of the crazed things happen across from the Capital, but

DOWNLOAD: Wilderness - Strand the Test of Time (MP3) Wilderness 's new record (k)no(w)here was released by Jagjaguwar on November 4th. Written for a performance at this year's Whitney Biennial , this obnoxiously titled release continues Wilderness's exploration of icy post-punk that falls tonally between PiL and U2. Guitarist Colin McCann uses delay and echo to create repetitions similar to those of the Edge and Keith Levene; the slowly shifting harmonies from Brian [...]
Monday: Little Joy @ Virgin Megastore 7pm FREE Like I said for their show last week at Mercury Lounge, anytime a member of The Strokes shows up in New York - whether it's for a side project or anything else - it is an event to behold. Now you can get in for free to catch the excellent new stuff from Fabrizio Moretti and the rest of his Little Joy group. This may be a packed event so get there a

I forgot how much I loved this guy. Dark atmospheric electronic music will always have a special place in my heart. Odd Nosdam - Fat Hooks Taking indie rock by storm yet again; +/- are back with their fun and dreamy album, Xs on Your Eyes. +/- - Snowblind "It took me years for these words," Bound Stems lead vocalist Bobby Gallivan hollers, "years to admit [...]

I'm still a week behind, but threatening to close the gap.... New Music Releases 11/4/08: Records I've Heard: Lou Reed : Berlin – Live at St. Ann's (Matador) – This is from the 2006 string of concerts that were filmed by Julian Schnabel and released on DVD. The DVD is still sitting on top of my DVD waiting to be watched. Berlin was the follow-up to Reed's excellent album, Transformer. Apparently it flopped both [...]

If you were digging those Videohippos tracks yesterday, how's about another Baltimore artpunk band... Wilderness . Downloadables: "Beautiful Alarms (Live In Slovenia)" (box.net mp3) from Love And Circuits: A Cardboard Records Compilation (From Aa To Zs) "Strand The Test Of Time" (scjag mp3) from (k)no(w)here (k)no(w)here is Wilderness's 3rd full-length. It is supposed to be listened to as one piece and was conceived after an invite to collaborate with artist Charles Long . Watch [...]

Still buzzing from last night's election results? It seems my computer certainly has, as it refused to work at all today and resulted in a late posting of this week's Graboid. Anyways, this week brings us a couple of releases which include the US release of Travis' sixth studio album Ode to J. Smith and The Lucksmiths' First Frost , their first new album since 2005's excellent Warmer Corners . Outside of those two big names, the rest of the pack include many lesser-known, but still decent releases [...]
Another not-so-notable release week. I know it's not that exciting when the two releases I'm looking forward to most are from a classical composer ( Johann Johannsson ) and a split EP with two artists I don't own anything by ( Thursday / Envy ). My guess is people don't want to drop an album on an election day. Can't blame them. It probably explains the huge release weeks we've had through the fall up until now, too. I'll also be checking out Black Moth Super Rainbow , Travis , [...]
In an eras where albums have been dissected into itty bitty pieces of art, where artists that make 2-minutes songs and 20-minute albums are lauded, it may be difficult to embrace something like the new Wilderness record (k)no(w)here. For starters this is not an album that should ever be broken down into individual mp3's (though I did below, shame on me) or listened to on iPod shuffle, instead

Election day is upon us and we're just thinking about music. If you don't know who you are going to vote for by now, then hopefully it was MUF that had you occupied. We're not going to get political, we just want you to be in the know with who is releasing albums/vinyls today. I don't think Obama or McCain have anything releasing today. This week's pick of groups to check out has a surprisingly natural appeal: Desolation Wilderness, Wild Beasts, The End of the World and , yes, Wilderness. Desolation [...]

Deerhunter Microcastle Kranky To some, Deerhunter will forever be linked with the Great Blog Wars of 2006-07, a time when smaller outlets battled with world's preeminent tastemaker, Pitchfork, for control of hipster ears. The burgeoning music blog scene had a mixed record as they pushed acts like Sound Team, Tapes N Tapes, Cold War Kids, and Birdmonster. Sometimes, Pitchfork agreed with the will of the blog aggregators, but most of the time they pushed back, hard, challenging the upstarts to be more careful with their picks and more responsible in [...]

I have a costume to make, a paper to write, and I'm working all weekend. Also, I'm simply not feeling like spending a lot of time here spewing forth a bunch of stuff about these bands below. So suffice it to say that since I'm posting it, it's all worth listening to. Once again, all tunes on this megapost are available as a ~100mb zip file, linked at the bottom of the page. Without further.... = [...]
