My next Fuel/Friends house concert is one week from today! On Wednesday night, April 24, Will Johnson is finally coming to play after a long time planning. Will is a Texan songwriter who fronts Centro-matic and South San Gabriel, making smoldering, understated music for the last twenty years. He's also collaborated on some of my favorite side projects in recent years: with Jim James and Jay Farrar on that tremendous Woody Guthrie album New Multitudes last year, as a [...]
Will Johnson , frontman of Centro-matic and South San Gabriel, is playing two shows in Portland this week, only I can't tell you where they are. Johnson is in the midst of his Western States Living Room tour, which takes him to a variety of house shows throughout the Western United States. The tour kicked off in Tucson last week, and Johnson plays Eugene tomorrow night, followed by two Portland shows (in two different houses) on Wednesday, April 17 and Thursday, April 18. To buy tickets—and to find out where these shows are—check out the Undertow Tickets page [...]

Based on name brand alone, you'd have to figure Overseas has the making of something incredible. And then all you have to do is listen to "Down Below" for confirmation that, yes, this will probably be just that. There's David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, Headphones, solo career). And then there's Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel), who trades singing duties with Bazan. And, oh, yeah, there's Matt and Bubba Kadane (Bedhead and the New Year, who are freaking great). Pretty soon, people will start throwing around that "supergroup" word, though [...]
I know Ryan will agree with this, as Overseas are pretty much our favorite super group. As Texas kids of the 90s, we grew into our own listening to the music of Centro-matic , Pedro the Lion and Bedhead , all who have components that are playing key roles here. That's right, you've got the Kadane's, Will Johnson and Mr. Bazan. I don't think that anyone who was around that the very thought of that combination alone gets chills going. I don't need to say much, but I'll share a [...]

So I have been remiss in the "Moving Pictures Monday" series due to many issues and excuses and negligence and various things so here we are on a Tuesday. Let's just not focus on that too closely. I have 4 videos from some people that I tend to like around here at Slowcoustic. I am starting it off with the Icelandic beauty of Old Skin from Ólafur Arnalds - great video to compliment the stunning song. ~~~ Next I saw a recent video of Will Johnson [...]

Graceface Records has enlisted a star-studded collection of singer-songwriters for a new tribute album honoring the late Jason Molina . Weary Engine Blues features contributions from Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie, The Microphones), Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon), John Vanderslice, Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg, Allo Darlin', and Will Johnson, among others. Below, you can stream Kozelek's cover of "It's Easier Now". The album comes accompanied by a screen print (which you can also see below). It was created by William Schaff as a gift to Molina. Proceeds from the sale [...]
Brother Dege is one of the best-kept secrets in the Deep South. A musician, writer and Southern enigma, Dege is the haunted face of 21st century Delta blues. The reclusive Louisiana Cajun's song Too Old To Die Young was recently selected by Quentin Tarantino to appear in the soundtrack of his new film Django Unchained - watch the new video for it along with the hushed, pensive tones of Will Johnson and the gorgeous acoustic ache provided so sweetly by Birds of Chicago . a [...]
From the resilient folk of Bhi Bhiman to the poignant rap of Brother Ali and Oddisee, from Bob Dylan’s continuing lyrical excursion to the catchiness of The Dig and The Mowgli’s, here are my 20 favorite albums of 2012. Alabama...

I've always considered Centro-Matic and Will Johnson to be a barometer of cool. Anybody that liked Centro-Matic, South San Gabriel or Will Johnson was cool. Other examples for me include The Mother Hips, A.A. Bondy and Sleater-Kinney. Here's an example of how a conversation would play out: Woody - "Did you hear that Will Johnson is touring with Monsters of Folk?" Random Person - "Yeah, that's awesome. Love Centro-Matic." That person is immediately deemed cool. And while I am not super-cool enough to break down their catalogs, there is [...]
The post craig finn, patterson hood and will johnson live - sessie crossing border appeared first on Captains Dead .

if youre in the new orleans and baton rouge area, i cannot recommend checking out who, imo, is one of the best bands on the planet, centro-matic , tonight at chelsea's in baton rouge. here's what i wrote a year ago when i initially posted this sampler. centro-matic came into my world one night at schubas many years ago. the year, i cant remember, and while not important, what is important is that they are still very heavily in my world. they were opening for anders parker and his band varnaline. i havent had too many [...]

Music for your mellow mood… enjoy! Will Johnson: Scorpion Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, New Multitudes) is one of those guys: either you love his music obsessively or you just haven’t listened to enough of it yet. His newest album is a great place to start. Here, he’s barely above a whisper, singing moody tales of love and woe with a quiet intensity that permeates the entire set. But this is much more complex and interesting than your normal singer/songwriter fare. Throwing in some beautiful instrumental pieces and with strong material throughout, Scorpion [...]

Will Johnson's voice is like a settling house -- each creak and groan tells a tale, reveals a secret hidden away. Scorpion is hit most beautiful album yet. The best music is meant to be transformative. Not that it changes us, but that it changes itself from the steel of string and wood and wire of instrument into sound which sublimates into feeling. So it's no wonder that Will Johnson, who transforms so often himself, is capable of such alchemy. He fronts South San Gabriel and Centro-matic. He's played with Jandek. He's recorded an album with Jason [...]
This week's drop of nearly two dozen fantastic, and some highly anticipated, albums continues to deliver memorable new singles from a mesmerizing range of artists, styles and genres. Yesterday, we posted the first half of this week's Best New Music Releases, featuring spectacular new singles from the latest albums by music giants like The Raveonettes, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

You know that everyone here at ATH loves Will Johnson , so of course we're going to take a little bit of time out of the day to celebrate his most recent release, Scorpion . In honor of his release, Will will be playing a free set at 5 PM on Tuesday, September 11th, over at Waterloo Records here in town, and I'm sure it's going to be intimate and charming. The new record is full of great tunes that I hope everyone enjoys, so we'll post this [...]
It's been a minute, but with both Patterson Hood and Will Johnson having solo records out this week (Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance and Scorpion, respectively), it seemed like a good time to bring back Longshots - an AD feature in which we step back and let artists interview one another. I kick things [...]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Will Johnson is one of the most active musicians in the state of Texas, and, well, out of it too; he's the main man for Centro-matic and he played drums on tour for Monsters of Folk . But, I've always had an affinity for his solo work, ever since I first put on Vulture's Await . On Scorpion , his new solo record, we're once again treated to an [...]
