In January, the marvelous website couchsurfing.org brought us a terrific set of houseguests: a couple from the beaches of California asked to stay in my home while they came to Colorado to pick up the due-any-day baby that they had just been chosen to be the adoptive parents of. For two weeks we got to host them and their brand new little guy, all wide eyes and stretching fingers. It was, in a word, magnificent. We forget that they make people that little, that new. Light as air and just about perfect. As I am wont [...]

Angela Easterling embodies all that is good about independent artist’s in niche genres, tirelessly writing, recording, touring and self promoting through the power of social media she's built a solid fan base and continues to impress with each release, her latest album Beguiler like the previous Black Top Road release benefits from the production skills of Americana gun for hire Will Kimbrough but this time around they use a more expansive sound palette to deliver the diverse set of tracks - twelve in all, there are ten self penned numbers, plus one written by Brandon Turner [...]

Will Kimbrough: Goodnight Moon [ purchase ] Shivaree: Goodnight Moon [ purchase ] The homonymic pair in question comes from two singles, both released in 2000, from two artists grounded in vastly different soil yet united by their common claim to the American folk and roots traditions. I could imagine both these songs on the same soundtrack, but the movie in question would have to have a hell of a plot [...]

White Man Runs Me Butch Hornsby Shit! Shit! Shit! I had a post all ready to go today and then this damn song by Butch Hornsby performed by Will Kimbrough from an upcoming book project by author Cyril Vetter crossed my desk. I can't say I know much about Butch Hornsby (and the internet is no help) although those in the know in the Louisiana music community extol his talent and genius. He's got a somewhat typical rock `n' roll story of tremendous talent laid waste by alcohol. Butch died [...]
I was thinking about a song I love called "Chimayo". I first heard it five years ago, and I put it on my blog back then . The song is from his 2000 album This . For being a self-professed "Queen of Media", I can be behind on some music. It's the nature of independent music - it takes time for word-of-webpage to come around. I hadn't looked at his site in awhile, so I decided to find out what's going on with Mr. Kimbrough. His website has a player on the [...]

Info on the runners and riders for the 2010 AMA's has surfaced, I always have trouble getting my head around this kind of thing, as rarely do the nominations make sense (to me), but hey if I had to choose the nominees the list run on and on, so I guess somewhere in here is a degree of logic. My winner(s) from the choices on offer below - I came [...]

Thought it was time to share another bootleg nugget featuring Rodney Crowell, this time around it's a Mountain Stage set that was aired in Nov 2008, Houston-born songwriter Crowell was jointed by Jenny Scheinman on violin and backing vocals and Will Kimbrough on guitar, percussion and backing vocals, the set starts and finishes with a track from Crowell's last album Sex & Gasoline, one from The Outsider and a pair from the 2001 autobiographical album The Houston Kid. The Rise and Fall of Intelligent Design [...]
Will Kimbrough has been around for quite some time now but released a new album, Wings , in February. I posted this video because there were limited choices and because this song reminds me of my favorite story people quote: "She is self-conscious because everyone knows she has wings but they've never seen her fly. Now & then there will be a feather in odd places or maybe a footprint to show she was there. All in all, she thinks it's nobody else's business what she does with her free time." [...]

The Duke & The King on Channel 4 Will Kimbrough "A Couple Hundred Miracle" @ Music Fog Black Prarie from Coverlaydown Red Rockin' Chair [...]
Will Kimbrough is known as a modern day musical renaissance man. He has produced, played with, written songs with and performed with all the A-listers in the americana scene and a few that are outside of that scene (namely his work with Jimmy Buffet). I've been into his stuff since he first surfaced as leader of Will and the Bushmen. I love his work with the band Daddy and his solo records have been consistently great. He's back in 2010 with a new record called Wings . There are a couple references to [...]
Some of the Oxford American magazine's Southern Music compilations are fetching ridiculous sums. I saw one of the comps, I don't remember from which year, for over $120 on Amazon.com. Crazy, since they're free with a $15 subscription . I have several of the compilations, and I get a more mileage out of them than an old rusty pickup. The last song on the 6th CD in the series is a lingering and proper farewell: a musical version of the classic children's book that has been read to you in dim, flickering light. [...]

John Prine recorded "Christmas In Prison" for his third album, in 1973, two years after he recorded "Paradise." In the interest of actually getting something posted today (sorry for the slack over the weekend) , I won't tell you all about each individual track, but there's a decent amount of variety here, so be sure to get 'em all. As always, I recommend the zipfile. Also, there are a lot of covers on YouTube. ( 1 2 3 4 5 should get you started.) [...]

As a companion post to the Jedd Hughes from earlier this week, thought I'd post Will Kimbrough's contibution to the Rodney Crowell Woodsongs set, Piece of Work. AMA Award winning Multi-instrumentalist and producer Will is a man in demand, as well as working with Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider, Kate Campbell, Matthew Ryan, Kim Richey and Josh Rouse ,Will's production credits include the excellent 2009 album from Angela Easterling Black Top Road , as well [...]

I'm only tracking a few bands on Myspace, Facebook or Twitter. I'm just not that methodical or organized to follow more. For some strange reason the band Daddy is one of these few bands. I like both Tommy Womack and Will Kimbrough as solo artists. So it's a no brainer that I'd like Daddy which is the band that combines these two iconoclastic rock `n' rollers. I've written about the band here and their solo careers here and here . The band is pretty serious about their ReverbNation [...]

Oh, this song is all kinds of wonderful tonight; simple like the last waltz across a darkened kitchen, easy like front porch swings and fireflies. Wistful and wonderful as the moon rises. Goodnight Moon - Will Kimbrough Goodnight moon, good night stars Goodnight old brokedown cars Gone away, leaving soon Goodnight darlin' Goodnight moon See I don't know where I'll be And I don't know if I'll see Out the window of my room Shining down [...]

I've written about a number of americana supergroups (The Resentments, Sometymes Why etc). They're usually comprised of individuals who are not household names in the real world, but are well respected in the world of roots music. The group called Daddy comprised of Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack, is another such band. They have a new record coming out June 21 that as of yet remains untitled. It'll be their first studio release since it follows up the 2005 live release At The Women's Club . These two first teamed up in a [...]

Well I did it. I waited `til after Thanksgiving to post my Christmas mix. So far a lot of these songs are from last year (or years past), hell I even recycled the photo from last year's post. I'll do my best to update this mix as new songs appear. I love these songs. They are some of the best Christmas songs you're likely to hear and for a large part they are ones I've dug up first. So Enjoy and Merry Christmas (three weeks early). P.S. I'm so low tech it's not even funny [...]

Will Kimbrough: Goodnight Moon [ purchase ] Though he fronted a few great but underappreciated rock bands in his time, Nashville veteran Will Kimbrough had long been known as one of the best musician's musician in Nashville. But until the release of his contemplative solo debut in 2000, he'd primarily made his reputation as a hired gun, touring and recording with the likes of Amy Rigby, Josh Rouse, and Todd Snider. This changed everything. It was [...]

It's Hell Week over at Star Maker Machine , and though I had pretty much relegated all cross-promotion of this collaborative blog to the sidebar, I thought coverfans and folkfans might be interested in this piece about Friend of the Devil , one of my favorite Grateful Dead tunes from one of my absolute favorite Dead albums American Beauty . For the original, plus five covers -- from countryfolker Lyle Lovett, true folksman Bob Dylan, poprockers Counting Crows, acoustic roots band Last Fair Deal, and oldschool newgrassers Rice, Rice, Hillman [...]

It has been flurrying around here lately. I thought it would be a good time to hit the Archive for some snowy Christmas songs. The Big Wu ~ Let It Snow (live) The Big Wu ~ Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (live) Before Cowboys ~ Snow Day (live) Throwing Muses ~ Santa Claus (live) Mogwai ~ Christmas Song (live) Mogwai ~ Xmas Steps [...]
