Tonight online literary/music/visual arts journal Storychord 's founder, Sarah Knowles, presented an evening of spooky stories, spookier songs and — this part's the spookiest — S'MORES. It provided a perfect transition into the impending madness of CMJ week. First worth noting is the intimate venue, HousingWorks Bookstore Cafe in New York's Greenwich Village. The old-timey structure boasts wrapping staircases, walls stuffed with books and a pious vibe. That last part's likely thanks to the establishment's charitable roots. Absolutely all proceeds generated from book, media and cafe sales go to benefit [...]

Great news today! One of my favorite songwriters, Will Stratton, has a new song available for download. Check out this Brooklyn Based post featuring the lovely new tune, "When You Let Your Hair Down to Your Shoulders," along with a brief interview with the man himself. If you'd like to read some of my ravings on Stratton's latest full-length, you can find that here.
Will Stratton - Franny Glass A 24 year old singer/songwriter - don't miss this guy's stuff. The studio recording of the song in the video, Franny Glass is quite good. Some talented guitar picking & lyrics. Stratton is a "self professed disciple of Nick Drake." He has also been described as functioning "under the wing of Sufjan Stevens." Stream & Buy his album(s) here: http://willstratton.bandcamp.c om/

and a kind gentleman to give away his excellent tunes. Here is another bandcamp freebie, and it will please the folk out of you. Listen to opening track "You Divers" from Vile Bodies and once you get to the 1:38 mark, you'll see what I mean. Vile Bodies is one of the best free EPs on bandcamp. His other albums are certainly worth a listen and a buy. Stream the beautiful " Who Will " from 2009's No Wonder or check out his latest New Vanguard Blues.

It's surely more understatement than hyperbole to suggest that Nick Drake was a man before his time. The Cambridge dropout who found Dylan and dope more engaging than his studies certainly impressed the members of Fairport Convention, who would go on to support his 1969 debut Five Leaves Left in the studio, but he only confused British audiences, who found the chronically depressed insomniac anxious and disengaged, and his ecologically-grounded poetics and organic chorus-less songs completely anathema to the world of sea shanties and traditional brit-folk with which they were familiar. [...]
Will Stratton is just a man with a guitar. Scratch that. Will Stratton is just a man with a guitar and a gift. A gift for strumming and picking, a gift for rhythm and for melody, a gift for singing in a low register and grabbing one's heart. I suppose that's several gifts. Let's move [...]

5. Will Stratton (@Spike Hill, 2pm); Last year Will Stratton wowed us with a single acoustic performance in Prospect Park. From there he continued to amaze us with his songwriting talents at our own CMJ showcase in October and with his remarkable second studio album No Wonder. Now he'll take his talents to Brooklyn where... Read More

Patience is a virtue, sure, but one that tends to slow things down and occasionally even seems completely unnecessary. Will Stratton's third album, New Vanguard Blues , serves as a reminder that impatience can be just as valuable a trait. After offering one of my favorite records of 2009—the consistently stunning No Wonder — Stratton apparently didn't want to bother taking the traditional route in releasing his third full-length. Recorded and mixed by the songwriter himself over the weekend of July 9th, the album was made available online only a couple weeks later, an unusual but certainly welcome [...]

Mix of the Month favorite Will Stratton is launching a kickstarter for funding his fourth record with New Vanguard Blues , a ten track compilation he's put up for sale on his bandcamp . Will was one of my favorite musicians at Bennington, and his acoustic lines really shine through on this record. It also sounds like he was able to get Maia Friedman 's gorgeous voice to accompany him on vocals. You can catch him live on [...]
I know Chris puts no pressure on any of us to post as frequently as he does, but I still feel like a bum. My blogging habits may suggest otherwise, but my summer has hardly been devoid of music. With the amount of incredible music surfacing this summer, no one should be wanting. A favorite find of the summer for me has been Will Stratton , who was introduced to me through a very special 'birthday mix' given to me by my friend Hillary. (The mix also came with a six-pack of coke. [...]

Song \' sóŋ\ n 2: A poetic composition. Music \'myü-zik \ n 2: an agreeable sound. To hear the work of Will Stratton is to experience music and song in both their simplest definitions while also swimming in their deepest of meaning. While the same could be said for many folk artists, Stratton offers us a sound keenly subtle and vast in spirit. His latest album, New Vanguard Blues, is constructed of sweetly singed words and melodies that are familiarly refreshing; songs that take the headache away and help us breathe [...]

Dipped in Dollars is proud to present our June Mix of the Month , where we ask an up-and-coming artist to present us with a mix that will allow us to gain a better perspective of their process/show us what we can expect to hear from them in the future. Will Stratton is a singer/songwriter from New Jersey who's been steadily garnering international attention. He recently opened for D.I.D. favorites Taken By Trees and El Perro Del Mar [...]

I've gotten behind on photos; these are from last week at the Knitting Factory, but that's no reason to forget about Will Stratton. Will is a singer-songwriter, but rarely falls prey to typical singer-songwriter pitfalls. A picture-perfect clear voice and subtle but emotional songwriting will appeal to fans of Sufjan and graduates of small liberal arts colleges alike (Stratton is a recent graduate of one himself, and so many of his lyrics are influenced by that experience that, well, listen to a few of his tracks and you'll see what I mean). He did a beautiful job opening for El [...]

Will Stratton is a NYC-area singer-songwriter who released this album No Wonder in October last year and as I have been listening to it pretty solidly over the past week I have to say I am very impressed here and this is some great, great stuff. Generally a very chilled out, spacious acoustic kind of sound, he really sets a great mood and a great tone with these songs. Great wintry kinds of songs, just really mellow and soft and really really well put together. This would [...]

For the first Feel Bad for You comp of 2010, I asked the forum members of AltCountryTab.ca to submit their favorite tracks from 2009 which other members may not have heard. My ACT peeps submitted a ton of songs, so I split it up into Side A and Side B to keep it a reasonable download size. Side B will be posted next week. The comments on the songs are from the people who submitted them. Guess which one I submitted? Side A - download the [...]

A goodbye kiss triggered New Jersey airport scare. The security scare that shut the Newark, New Jersey airport for hours and delayed thousands of passengers was caused by a man who slipped into a secure area to give a woman a goodbye kiss, video released on Thursday showed. The man then slipped underneath a security cordon, met a departing female passenger who had already passed through a security checkpoint, and gave her what appeared to be a goodbye kiss, the video showed. The man and woman, who remain unidentified, walked off screen hand-in-hand. - 01/07/2010 [...]

More great albums! ( Previous ) (Next) 20: Fanfarlo - Reservoir Newcomers Fanfarlo are off to a very hot start with Re servoir , an epic indie-rock album that I think was criminally overlooked this year by most everyone. Between the strings, the horns, and the anthematic choruses, it's about impossible to find something to dislike in the well-crafted songs on their debut. ( More from me ) [...]

One would think ballads to lovers lost would sound anything but apathetic. One would be wrong. Still, despite the detached disinterest in his voice, Will Stratton writes engagingly private songs that soothe the soul. When your heart has been broken, it's nice to know someone else has been there before. Reminds Us Of: J. Tillman | Ben Gibbard | lonely Jack Johnson Will Stratton: ( Official Site | MySpace ) will stratton no wonder [...]
