I usually don't hold much trust in music recommendation sites but one producer I discovered a few years ago thanks to Last.FM's "you like this dude, you might like this dude" system was the brilliant William Baskinski . A quick dive into his discography unveiled a collection of quality modern classical music, left of centre electronica and reel to reel tape loop weirdness. While people usually wheel out his "Disintegration Loops" as a fine example of his work, "Variations : A Movement In Chrome Primitive" is more than worth your time. [...]

When William Basinski opened his nightclub Arcadia in 1992, Williamsburg had more than a decade of history as an outerborough artists' colony. Arcadia and a handful of other entities such as The Lizard's Tail, Lalalandia, Test-Site gallery, Nerve Circle Studios, Mustard and Galapagos transformed the artists' colony into a full blown urban subculture. No neighborhood in Brooklyn compares to Williamsburg for the shrillness of her declaration of artistic autonomy in the closing years of the last century. This neighborhood is the heart of the Brooklyn Renaissance. And at the heart of Williamsburg, in the pivotal years, was [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the re-release and of the glacial ambient masterpiece One River by acclaimed US producer Scott Solter . First released on Tell-All Records in 2005, One River sees Solter exploring the space between Brian Eno's seminal Music For Airports and William Basinski's contemporary classic The Disintegration Loops . The music sighs and aches beautifully, gradually transforming with subtlety and grace, lulling the listener into blissful reverie. Solter has produced, recorded, mixed and remixed numerous [...]

Legend has it William Basinski was debuting parts of his four volume Disintergration Loop project for a couple friends on the roof of his Brooklyn apartment building as the World Trade Center towers were struck and collapsed on 9/11. It's a fitting and understated soundtrack to something so world shattering and (probably) from the Brooklyn apartment onlookers' point of view oddly peaceful and far away. The Wordless Music Orchestra performed part of The Disintegration Loops on Sunday as part of the "Remember September 11th" concert held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The [...]

As a phrase, September 11th refers to something far beyond the physical events of that bright morning. Over the past decade, the signifier has come to refer to something beyond the craven attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. The phrase now embodies a whole host mental pathologies that have haunted the national consciousness now for a decade. A frightening sense of paralysis in the captive national audience watching the horrorshow on television in real time. A crippling sense of terror, a fear beyond words, that snakes its cold fingers down our collective spine even ten years after. An unimaginable [...]

True story – the first time I ever heard about Big Ears and saw the original lineup for the first year (2009), I didn't even bother looking up where the festival was held, because I knew I'd be disappointed. Living in Tennessee, I'm used to all the best, most innovative events happening far away. Sure, we have Bonnaroo , and I love that. But the smaller, more avant-garde festivals are usually only found in New York or overseas. So imagine my surprise when I found out that Big Ears, a small festival that is more in line with any [...]

New Year's Resolutions department (1): hear more William Basinski in 2010... '"...I got back to work and found yet another lunchbox of ancient tape-loops to go through for possible inclusion in the new piece. I came across the main theme and thought...well, this is gorgeous; let's see if we can use this to coax Viv to come out. I went through the rest of them and found another dozen or so that mixed well used randomly, just under the threshold. "The [...]
2. Ben Frost - By The Throat (Bedroom Community) Visueler dan dit heb ik muziek volgens mij nog niet gehoord. Angstaanjagend mooi. 3. 4. The Whitest Boy Alive [...]

#20 William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops (2001-2003) First, just look at those covers. I would love to own all four of these on vinyl and mount the sleeves on a wall like that. But without the text that identifies them as a conceptual tape loop experiment tackling themes of entropy and decay, obviously. 'Cos that would just look buffoonish and pretentious. Second, I weirdly feel the need to acknowledge that this choice might not technically constitute an album in spite of [...]

Today was one of those "I hate my life" days, but since I came home from work things are slowly turning around. Maybe a little Sunday Mix Tape will help sooth my frazzled nerves. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see [...]

Record Store Day was a smashing success. We brought in, as far as I know, the 2nd largest amount of dollars in any sale in the history of the store. The only day that outperformed yesterday was Christmas '08. Who the hell says we're in an economic depression? When a tiny independent store can rake in twice my annual salary in a span of nine hours...it really makes one wonder. I'd post some pictures to prove how much pandemonium there was yesterday, but I've yet to find any circulating online. Oh well, it's your loss. That said, today [...]
