Ruthie Foster and her band created magic March 23, 2012 at Eddie's Attic.

I haven't done a Copy Borrow Steal for ages. Inspired by Tim English' fine book Sounds Like Teen Spirit ( website and buy ), it really is a very occasional series: this is the fifth article in two and a half years. In this instalment we'll look at a Van Morrison hit that sounds a bit like a soul number from 1968/71; an early Elvis hit written almost a hundred years earlier; and a Led Zeppelin song that doesn't draw inspiration from some blues singer, but from the Doobie Brothers. * * [...]

Ruthie Foster's latest is a smoldering gospel kitchen of fire, rain, love, and the Almighty.

Keeping with the vintage toons, here's another mostly soul mix for your listening pleasure. FYI - that's Inez Foxx on the cover. January 2012 Mix 01 Dionne Warwick - You're Gonna Need Me (1973) 02 Mable John - No Love (1960) 03 Gladys Knight & The Pips - Didn't You Know (You'd Have to Cry Sometime) (1969) 04 Barbara & The Browns - It Hurts Me So Much (To Be Able To Look And To [...]

Categorizing the productions of Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights , is a little complicated, as he tends to fuze hip hop style beats, often at dance music tempos, with buzzing synths, moving pads, and classic soul and funk samples. I have to be honest, I embarrassingly didn't even know about the Pretty Lights phenomenon until my homegirl Allie's facebook status earlier this year when she said, "listening to my new obsession, Pretty Lights". Reading that led me to over an hour of youtube viewing, the whole time in awe of his live performances , pausing frequently to [...]

Marissa Nadler - You Don't Miss Your Water (William Bell cover)

One of WLFY's favorite singer/songwriters, Marissa Nadler, is always busy with writing new music and creating interesting projects. Nadler is working on her second covers album and this edition promises over thirty tracks. To our delight, she has made two of the tracks available through soundcloud. Nadler's beautiful stylings are put to work with Leonard Cohen's "Winter Lady" and William Bell's "You Don't Miss Your Water". Enjoy: travelling lady by marissanadler [...]

The Warren Haynes Band makes its New York City debut on May 12 at the Beacon Theatre, two days after the release of Warren's soul-laden Man In Motion LP. For the group's initial NYC appearance they will be joined by legendary Stax artist William Bell. Bell is known as one of the architects of the Stax-Volt sound that has clearly influenced Haynes' latest musical direction. Next up for Warren's group is a set at the Wanee Festival tomorrow.

Everybody Taste will be heading south for the holiday season in search of the mythical perfect wave. Christmas got funky, Christmas got soul! The analytical eagle-eyed reader may have deduced, by astute observation of the post's title, that this year's Christmas mix is dominated by soul music, and that there will be at least one more compilation. Indeed, there will be at least a second mix of Christmas soul tracks from the heyday of the genre – the 1960s and '70s. I have held back a few cracking numbers anyway. Still, this is a really great bunch of songs. Whoever I got the utterly gorgeous opening track from, I am particularly grateful to. The Flirtations, one of [...]
First Lewis remakes a solo "We Are the World" and then covers two Stax classics.

I just can't get over losin' you And so if I seem, broken and blue Walk on by, walk on by Foolish pride, that's all that I have left Thanks to a wonderful teacher in high school, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the entire Stax singles catalog almost immediately upon becoming interested in 60's R+B. I went from one cd, Otis Redding's Greatest Hits, Volume 2 to The Complete Stax Singles 1959-1968. I think a lot of folks can hand something this comprehensive to a [...]

An actual Edinburgh street sign A couple of days after coming back from France I was on the road again. This time I returned to Scotland for the second time in two months and to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the fourth time this decade. Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and it's a busy place during the month of August. The streets are full of tourists, performers and, I presume, people from Edinburgh. There are hundreds of venues devoted to putting on some amazing comedy, theatre and music [...]

Schadenfreude is a feeling you've probably had, even if you don't know what it means. German-born sociologist Theodor Adorno defined Schadenfreude as "largely unanticipated delight in the suffering of another which is cognized as trivial and/or appropriate." Anticipated or not, there is something slightly uncomfortable about taking pleasure in another's pain. But the singers in today's mix sound pretty damn smug about their adversaries' demise. People say, "hate to say I told you so," but really they love it. William Bell - I Told You So I bet you regret it already, [...]

Here's my weekly reminder to point your internet browser to LittleRadio.com this Friday from Noon to 2:00 PM for the Sinking Radio show. Each week I pick one song for the show and then write about it here. My pick for this week's show is William Bell's "I Forgot to Be Your Lover." As I've mentioned before, this year I've been trying to really explore the Stax catalog. I didn't grow up on soul or funk, so there have been a lot of great revelations. Some of the stuff is [...]
