As he grew up on a barren Iowa horse farm along the banks of the Mississippi River, William Elliott Whitmore developed a respect for nature and man's sole inheritance of emotions. With nothing but a banjo and an acoustic guitar, Whitmore releases his third album Song of the Blackbird telling stories of the land where he grew up, love, loneliness, and several other aspects of humanity. With vocals destined to tell an interesting tale, Whitmore recalls the classic storytelling of Tom Waits and Johnny Cash with more of a Southern touch. Folk, [...]
A new feature in which I'll interview some of my favorite bloggers. Muzzle of Bees was one of my first music blogs I started reading regularly and it's not hard to see why. Ryan's site showcases his great taste, his eye for design and a friendly, personable writing style. He comes across as one of the nicest guys in the blogosphere (check out his answer to my third question for further evidence), motivated by [...]

I first came across this young, tattooed folk singer with the gravelly voice early last Spring on the recommendation of a friend over beers at SXSW . After checking out a few on his tunes online, I made a mental note to re-visit William Elliott Whitmore's music when I had more time. I made good on that promise this past month via his new record entitled Song of the Blackbird . [...]
I can’t get enough of William Elliott Whitmore, so I was happy to check out the new podcast Southern records is offering up. It’s a twenty minute interview, and Whitmore sounds like one of the most genuine guys on the planet. He finishes the p-cast with a nice foot-stomping live version of the track Dry from his new album, Song of the Blackbird. He’s not hitting Van-city, but the Seattle show

Last year, William Elliot Whitmore cracked my top 20 songs of 2005 with the rollicking "Midnight" powered only by acoutic guitar and a stomping foot. Now he returns with another full length entitled Song of the Blackbird (Southern Records). While I am delinquint in purchasing the LP, I can say without reservation that the simplistic yet gourgeous "Dry" (see below for mp3) is one of the best five songs of 2006. And "The Chariot", with its full backing band demonstrates William's versatility to allow something other than his right foot to [...]

William Elliot Whitmore will be on tour soon with Lucero as mentioned before, but here is some material from his new album on Southern Records, Song of the Blackbird . ( Buy ) William Elliot Whitmore - The Chariot Bonus --- William Elliot Whitmore - Take It On The Chin

William Elliot Whitmore [ website / label page / myspace ] restored my faith in music. Sometimes you just need some Americana to remind you where all this [as I gesture to the great expanse of pop music] comes from. His new album Song of the Blackbird is a mix of bare banjo, lamentation, and a some fuller arrangements. While I prefer the simplicity of just him and his banjo, the others sound like well-constructed Ben Harper tunes. More Cowbell has seen him a couple times as an opener and [...]
It has taken me a while to get around to listening to Regina Spektor's indie best-of release here in the UK on Transgressive. Most if not all of the songs are already available on other albums, but having all my favourites on one CD caught my attention. Us is the final track of the album and [...]
