~ Liam Frost feat. Martha Wainwright - "Your Hand In Mine" ~ Great upbeat track from Liam Frost's upcoming album We Ain't Got No Money, Honey, But We Got Rain . The song definitely stands on own but the fact that Martha Wainwright appears on it makes it even better. ~ Russian Red - "Cigarettes" ~ Russian Red is actually Lourdes Hernández took her stage name from a lipstick color. This song is - suitably with its title - addictive with it's simple guitar structure [...]

I've been straggling with this album for sometime now. Gibbs is definitely a very talented singer-songwriter with both a beautiful melodic voice and clever compositions. His influences are kind of a history lesson of 20th century music, from the 50's and 60's (or sometimes even 20's and 30's) all the way to contemporary pop and alternative rock. Perhaps this is his biggest flaw though, since his style varies so much across this album that many songs feel out of place. While some tracks like Darling You were Beautiful Once , Come Back to Me and [...]
"Was I On Your Mind" - Jessie Baylin "Was I On Your Mind" has the hallmarks of a great pop hit--hooks, craft, canny performance--and yet is unlikely to be anything of the sort here in 2008, just because who the hell knows anymore. The music market is as unhinged as the oil market. History teaches us, however, that craziness is always an aberration in the long run. There is no reason to assume that a song as crisp, well put together, and engagingly sung as this one won't again find favor with the [...]

Is this a joke? Is this nostalgia? Is this irony? Ironic nostalgia? Can we be nostalgic for a time we've only seen in our great-grandparents' photo albums? Track 1 - Darling, You Were Beautiful Once Track 7 - Operate William F. Gibbs' My Fellow Sophisticates starts off with a honky tonk piano, 20's dumpa-dumpa heartbeat sounding big band drums, one of those sliding spinning top type noisemakers, and Gibbs' bass-strong voice. He sings well – theatrically - frequently dragging [...]

man its hotter than a motherfucker down here, but i know we aint alone. one thing i love about the south is that no matter how hot it gets you will still seem quite a few ladies dressed to the nines. it was about 90 degrees at 10 am on saturday while we were at the virginia highlands summerfest. i was sweating my ass off in shorts, flip flops and a holy t-shirt and what comes struttin down highland ave but a bunch of 20 something broads who looked like they just stepped out of the 80's porno version of [...]

Kick-starting this first week of June, we have what is possibly the best week of album releases so far this year. I almost didn't bother to post this week's Graboid, since I just haven't felt like writing anything lately. But, it's times like these that just makes you excited about music, and it was just the thing I needed to hopefully get things back into motion here on the blog. Since I was actually listening to Shearwater's Rook as I was compiling this post, I figure it would be best to mention [...]

myspace :: label It's a shame most CDs come with stickers that are jammed to the gunnels with RIYL and hyperbole laced descriptions. As I flip through the countless records on my desk, seeing that an artist might sound like, oh I don't know, M Ward, Langhorne Slim or Ryan Adams , increases the expectations to a staggering height. I know those are there to help the record bubble to the top of reviewers piles (note, it rarely works), but for a poor fella like William F. Gibbs it really pigeon [...]
If you haven't noticed, the 2008 Summer Membership Drive is going on right now at KEXP. After you pledge your support to independent radio , be sure to also support independent artists and record stores. Among the artists releasing new albums this week (check Largehearted Boy's list for the full run-down) are true DIY-ers Robert Pollard & The Futureheads, who are both putting out their latest on their own labels. Also worth picking up are the new ones from The Ting Tings, Ladytron, Fleet Foxes, The Cool Kids, The Pinker Tones, The Virgins, and Baskervilles [...]

Download: William F. Gibbs -- "Operate" Download: William F. Gibbs -- "Darling, You Were Beautiful Once" My Fellow Sophisticates is a haunting medley that's immediately immersive, whether it's "Brother John", the song of a devout priest whose only secret is disbelief, "Tomorrow Never Comes", an intelligent look at a culture willing to trade their souls for fame, or the dream-inspired "Oh Pollyana". Call it Americana, call it Alternative Folk or Rock and Roll. Ultimately, labels don't matter. William F. Gibbs writes music that reflects [...]

William F. Gibbs is unleashing his debut album, My Fellow Sophisticates onto a not-so ready world June 3rd. What the release brings is anyone's guess, but Gibbs states the album is for "the Playlist Generation," so expect a lot of odes to iPod Shuffles and expertly crafted Muxtapes. William F.
