Time to revisit William Fowler Collins' extraordinary debut album Western Violence & Brief Sensuality . Released in 2006, it's a record that could easily be considered ambient if composition were the only thing to be taken into account. The textures and musical timbres that Fowler Collins uses are way too varied for that. Sometimes they are filled with a distant twang, sometimes, as on Dawn at McDonald Ranch , they are far too shocking and abrasive. It opens with a long, sharp, tremulous whine. It's like a vast insect chorus, the sound [...]

There are dark forces at work deep in the deserts of New Mexico. William Fowler Collins has been hard at work since his last full-length effort, but collaborations with GOG and Aaron Turner (of ISIS) haven't deterred him from crafting this pitch-black follow up. The Resurrections Unseen will be available in the USA from November 7th. 500 copies on vinyl with initial copies in red, it will be released as vinyl and digital only. Read more »

If you don't already know William Fowler Collins, you soon will. After self-releasing a glorious, beautiful, solo guitar masterwork entitled Western Violence & Brief Sensuality in 2007, Mr. Collins released a downright stunning follow-up album last year, Perdition Hill Radio , which I declared to be the third best album released all year. It was issued by the venerable UK experimental label Type Records , and might still be available through their website. I met William electronically (that's fancy-talk for "online, not in real life") many moons ago, when I ranked Western Violence... [...]

And so the last release on the Type label, the relatively melodic and summery self-titled album by City Center, proves to have been no more than a twinkle-toed dummy. They have shimmied quickly back to the dark side, finding spaces occupied by team members Svarte Greiner and Xela, piercing my defences with a couple of [...]

One year ago I interviewed William Fowler Collins for this website. We discussed his first album, Western Violence & Brief Sensuality , his home state of New Mexico, and his musical past. Since then we've kept in semi-regular contact with one another, and as you may have read on this website he put on a great show in Los Angeles during the last week of May. I recently conducted a second interview with William, which has been posted on WFMU's Beware Of The Blog . This second interview deals with the recording of his [...]

There is nothing like driving across the country. Although it might sound a bit antisocial, I prefer to go it alone. There are no distractions, and nothing to stop you from completely losing yourself in your surroundings. Out of sheer desire (I assure you it is not boredom) you are compelled by unknown forces to try unusual new things and do what you would ordinarily choose not to do. I strayed from the beaten path whenever possible. I was constantly observing, listening to, and recording my constantly changing environment. Upon returning home after a long rip, all [...]
