If you are in or around San Francisco we are having our record release party for the 12" re-issue of Carmen's Time To Move at Sweaterfunk this Sunday. Held at China Town's Li Po lounge. For everyone else, here is one of my favorite afro boogie tracks of all time, it has been bootlegged twice in the past 10 years or so, the original from time to time making it's way out of Nigeria into the hands of European record dealers.. I have to leave the apartment, I'll finish the rest of this post [...]

We posted the original of this afro beat jive recently, the next day Auntie Flo sent us his subtle edit over, stretching it out and emphasizing that mesmerizing that total freak out that rolls right through it. Its easy to see Flo is heavily inspired by this type of stuff, along with the whole Comeme sound, afro taco... ONYEABOR | GOOD NAME (AUNTIE FLO EDIT)

Seconds anyone? Last week we featured some 1970's West African jams courtesy of two of Nigeria's most well-loved Afro-rock bands, BLO and Ofege. Both selections certainly emphasized the Western influence and the "rock" side of the Afro-rock equation. This week let's venture into a bit more adventurous territory, with a couple of tracks that display a more pronounced African influence. It should go without saying that we're obviously just scratching the surface here, but next week Stacks promises to move on to different territory (even if its author doesn't). The Harbours Band [...]

I was in NY looking for records maybe 6 years ago at Fatbeats and I stumbled across this new release called " World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing". At the time I was djing almost every weekend for my B-boy crew DvC so I was always looking for that funky record that could separate me from the other djs at the jams. Here is one record that helped me achieve that goal. The track off " Love's a Real Thing" that always got the room buzzing was called "Better Change Your Mind" [...]

Alright, after all that optimism, it's time to get our feet back on the ground. My friend Travis put this AMAZING song on a recent mix. I'm totally obsessed. I did a little research on Onyeabor, and this was about all I could find: William Onyeabor studied cinematography in Russia for many years, returning to Nigeria in the mid-70s to start his own Wilfilms music label and to set up a music and film production studio. He recorded a number of hit songs in Nigeria during the 70s, the biggest of [...]

Here we have an afro beat track by William Onyeabor from the album, Atomic Bomb. An afro bomb, Change Your Mind. It's great leftfield afro disco from Nigeria realeased in 1978. William Onyeabor - Change Your Mind

This is so good it makes me sick. It grows and grows on you. Strangely enough, it sounds like a west african Nick Drake w/ synths and shitty drum machines....and GOD I hope that doesn't detract you from downloading this... William Onyeabor - "Better Change Your Mind"

Check out the little guy pointing to his missing tooth, now that's pride. While not what we had in mind when naming this little website of ours, the other continent across the Atlantic is in the spotlight today. Lifelong BTA ally Rainer Tan picked up for Tanzania last year and has been doing fine work ever since, volunteering on logistical operations for hospitals and equally noble community building programs. His journey's taken him across the continent, and as if it wasn't enough he's an ace humanitarian, he might just become the next Tanzanian radio king. [...]
As he looked skyward, a fat sulphuric-tinged orb hit him squarely in the eye. Clive simultaneously resented his desk-bound job that kept him aloof from these elements and internally swore at whoever had contaminated with acid the liquid currently rinsing out his eye. This unscheduled lunch break was becoming more of a trudge than anticipated, veering away from the excuse of "fresh air" and towards aimless moping, of the kind undertaken at work, only with more sweating attached. The rain had started slowly, like the final shakes of a colander, but the grey sky was now teeming with great plodding [...]
