Intrigued Vinyl: Soft Machine – Seven

Intrigued Vinyl: Soft Machine – Seven If you first looked at this band name and thought I was talking about a book, you aren't that crazy, just well read. The band name  Soft Machine was, in fact, named after William S. Burroughs' The Soft Machine . If you want to talk books I'll gladly do it any time, but for now let's stick to  Seven.  This album, very cleverly named, is the seventh studio album release by Soft Machine  from 1973. In lieu of this creative number (I always intend puns) I would like to describe it with seven words in [...]

Videomixtape: Radio Soulwax presents “Dave” (a tribute to David Bowie)

RSWX presents Dave
David and Stephen Dewaele (aka The Flying Dewaele Brothers aka 2manydjs aka Soulwax) made the ultimate tribute to their biggest music hero--David Bowie. The brothers worked on an hour long mix with “all things Bowie, whether that is original songs, covers, backing vocals, production work or reworks” and called their friend and director Wim Reygaert to visualise their mix and David Bowie’s spectacular career. Wim Reygaert had also directed Radio Soulwax’s film “Into the Vortex” before.

FLASHBACK: Sonic Youth

FLASHBACK: Sonic Youth When I began writing this piece I looked back through SONIC YOUTH ’s discography in the hope of finding a particular record to focus on. With every listen through each record, memories came flooding back, every song reminding me of a different time in my late teen years. With so many great memories I just couldn’t choose, so I’ve picked a couple of my favourites from over the years. 'The Diamond Sea' Loud, raucous, gritty and abrasive are just a few of the [...]

William S Burroughs & Kurt Cobain; The Priest They Called Him

William S Burroughs & Kurt Cobain; The Priest They Called Him This weeks Friday Flashback Track was inspired by the super hard new track from Thurston Moore's new band, Chelsea Light Moving. Burroughs was inspired by the last words of one Mr. William S Burroughs, "Love? What is it? Most natural painkiller what there is". So we go back to 1993, and the collaboration of Billy and one Mr. Kurt Cobain. The "Priest" They Called Him was originally released as a 10" picture disc, and features Kurt on noise guitar and Mr. Burroughs reading a short story originally published in 1973 as part of the collection of [...]

Thurston Moore Plays Burroughs Rock

Thurston Moore Plays Burroughs Rock Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore paid homage to an avant-folk forebear with a Michael Chapman cover last week, but now he has a full LP's worth of music inspired by one of the most influential writers in rock. Finding a point of liftoff in William S. Burroughs' last words (“Love? What is it? Most natural painkiller what there is.”), Chelsea Light Moving is a new group realizing Moore's long-held goal "to form a band that played Burroughs Rock," an idea that first occurred to him while visiting the late Beat Generation legend's Lawrence, Kansas home in the mid-'90s. The quartet [...]

The All-Time Coolest Author/Musician Collaborations

The All-Time Coolest Author/Musician Collaborations Collaborations between musicians and authors seem obvious, like they should happen all the time, but the truth is, good ones don't come along that often. Earlier this month, however, author, poet, and memoirist Mary Karr released her first album,  Kin , in collaboration with country singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell, and boy is it good. Though we might be a little biased since we've always been die-hard Mary Karr fans, we love the album, which combines Karr's sublime poetry with Crowell's formidable musical talent. Inspired by their collaboration, we got to thinking about other fantastic author/musician pairs, from [...]

Decoder Knocks You Over

By Robert Ham Movie - Decoder (Muscha, 1984) What's on Network Awesome today? To understand the power that a film like Decoder can wield over the people watching it, try this experiment: turn down the brightness on your computer screen until it is completely blank (or for the low-tech version, just shut your eyes while the video plays). Even if you don't have a working knowledge of the German language, the [...]

[Poetry] William S. Burroughs – A Thanksgiving Prayer

[Poetry] William S. Burroughs – A Thanksgiving Prayer It's kind of narrowing and frightening to think that things the great American poet & author William S. Burroughs intended as a barb at the things we celebrate on Thanksgiving, in his briliant monotone delivery of "A Thanksgiving Prayer", are actually being repeated by people with sincerity in 2011. The Fred Phelps's, Rick Perry's and Michele Bachmann's of the world seem even more delusional and self-evolutionary when you consider the following piece. The video, directed by Gus Van Sant , is a simple and agile affair, allowing the words and music which underpin [...]

William S. Burroughs: A Thanksgiving Day Prayer

William S. Burroughs: A Thanksgiving Day Prayer As you get ready to take off and do whatever it is you do on this great American holiday, I figured I'd share a few glutenous words with you by the great American novelist, essayist, social critic, painter, spoken word performer and all around avant-garde author, William S. Burroughs. His "Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 19863 poem first appeared in the chapbook Tornado Alley , published in 1989. As a testament to Burroughs' badassedness the book was dedicated to John Dillinger. Later Gus Van Sant made a short film of Burroughs reading the text, which you see below. How fucking poignant [...]

Six Degrees of Kurt Cobain: Seeking Outer Nirvana

Six Degrees of Kurt Cobain: Seeking Outer Nirvana This year - 2011, if you forgot - marks the 20 th anniversary of the release of Nirvana ’s Nevermind . As with all such moments, reissues, tributes, and all kinds of analysis and discussion will spring from the well. I don’t recall this much fuss when The White Album turned 20. I am not here to fellate Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, or their legacy, nor am I here to kick them in the balls. Let me say for the record that I do like Nirvana. I was just never one of those kids [...]

From The Desk Of Of Montreal: William S. Burroughs

William Burroughs cut ups
of Montreal’s music is hard to define, given it changes more often than frontman Kevin Barnes’ sequined and feathered outfits during a live show. One album might be heavy on the drum machine and synthesizer, while another showcases Barnes’ best high-pitched Prince wail with more traditional strings and percussion. The Atlanta band boasts a prodigious [...]

Mutate or die is what the William S Burroughs said. Now people are trying to mix up his doodie with someone else's special mess. Art is fun!

William S. Burroughs: A Man Within

Director: Yony Leyser Running time: 88 minutes William S. Burroughs: A Man Within chronicles the existence of one of the greatest Beat and American writers of the modern age, through what can only be regarded as a rather turbulent existence. Undoubtedly, the author of works such as Naked Lunch, Junkie and The Soft Machine , lived quite an eventful life. Married twice, a closet homosexual and a junkie for a large portion of his life, Burroughs career would have been lost in scandal were it not for [...]
