While "attending" the Newport Folk Festival Sunday (from my couch. thank you NPR), I was reminded that my music collection consists of "The Secret Sisters", (which by the way, should not be a secret) and how I should be listening to them more often. The Secret Sisters consists of Laura and Lydia Rogers who are really sisters and hail from Alabama. The sweet, simplistic blend of their vocal harmonies that only family can capture, take you back to the innocence of the 50's, while their traditional country sound makes me want to grab a [...]
WILLIE NELSON ( Edgefield , 2126 SW Halsey, Troutdale) By the numbers, it's been 78 years, 74 albums, seven children, and four arrests for drug possession: Yes, it's the one-and-only Willie Nelson. See him sing and strum the night away. SARAH MIRK ICEAGE, DEATHCHARGE, CULT OF YOUTH, THE PRIDS, ARCTIC FLOWERS, ATROCITY EXHIBITION, DJ AHEX ( East End , 203 SE Grand) At first it seemed as if Iceage was to punk as Liturgy was to black metal. Critically swooned [...]

In the slipstream of Johnny Cash came what would become known as the Outlaw Movement, an informal response to Nashville's easy listening, corporate and safe style, often recorded in Texas, reviving the honky tonk sounds of Hank Williams with strong lyrical content. Starting in the mid-'60s with singers like Bobby Bare, Tompall Glaser and Johnny Darrell, the sub-genre's standard bearers would include Waylon Jennings and his wife Jessi Colter, Willie Nelson (after he grew his hair), Kris Kristofferson, Leon Russell, Billy Joe Shaver, Hank Williams Jr, Jerry Jeff Walker and Gram Parsons. More traditionally-minded country stars, many mentored [...]

Judge Becky Dean-Walter of Hudspeth County, Texas has thrown out a mailed-in plea in Willie Nelson's recent pot arrest because she felt that Prosecutor Kit Bramblett was "overly deferential" to the country singer. Nelson will now not have to pay the agreed upon $780 fine, but he could be facing some jail time. While some would have the charges, which basically amount to an old man smoking marijuana on a chauffeured bus, thrown out, I think it's great to see our court system finally getting the truly dangerous criminals off the street. Whether or not you believe Willie Nelson mailed in his most recent Houston-area performance at Verizon in April, one thing is sure: The singer and Texas icon won't be mailing in the fine and cour... Continue reading "Willie Nelson Not Off The Hook For 2010 Pot Bust After All" >

I am a member of two Mix CD clubs. They're great! You get 12 people together and each month someone is responsible for sending the other 11 members a mix. You get new music, new perspectives, all for the price of the effort it takes to make one of these yourself and the subsequent packaging and postage. For various reasons, I wanted to put together a mix of American music for my latest mix. Partly, I was trying to understand what American music means to me, and what kinds of songs and sounds I find distinctly American. To [...]

In every sense of the word, Willie Nelson is a legend. On the 4th of July, Willie throws a big party/show at his place, in Texas. And leading up to that show, he takes a festival on the road called his "Country Throwdown," which is comprised mostly of below or barely-on the radar artists, using [...]
