First Taste Of Hurt Thanks to the Bedazzled crew for inviting me to take a part in this incredible site! I have spent many hours enjoying all of the incredible posts, and I'll do my best to keep up with their standards! I have been hosting a site for nearly four years now called Derek's Daily 45, featuring 45's from my collection; mostly 60's, but I've also been including a fair amount of 70's soul as of late. Here's a record that epitomizes the feel of New Orleans soul; the [...]

Alex Chilton died a year ago today. Among his many attributes (singer, songwriter, band leader, and troublemaker) he was an interpreter and connoisseur of songs - all kinds of songs. I'd like to think that Alex had a big record collection but he probably did not. It would have only weighed him down. He was more likely a kind of musical sponge absorbing everything and spewing it out artfully in his own way. Today, in remembrance of Alex we'll listen to a few of those songs performed by the original artists that he brought to [...]

It has definitely been too long since I posted something from the late, great Willie Tee . So, to at least make a dent in that deficit, I'm offering up (with, of course, the usual bunch of semi-random factoids, opinions of questionable merit, and digressive musings) some tracks of his from back when the 1970s were just kicking in, then moving on up to that bicentennial year.... A Capitol Idea [...]

While looking through the archives recently for a certain disc, I came across a self-made compilation entitled "Pure & Unadulterated Northern Soul: Volume 1". I remember that I had four volumes of this which I would use when DJing Northern Soul nights around Los Angeles. I also copied these discs for interested friends. I'm posting this compilation in its entirety here as it's as perfect a "Northern Soul's Greatest Hits!" mix as anything you are likely to find. Some of these songs are complete classics for me. I could go on [...]

by Pete Wingfield I wrote and recorded "Scratchy 45s" in 1976, as a tribute to the New Orleans R&B that I loved then, and still do. The idea was to cram in as many crafty musical and lyrical allusions as possible, while still ending up with a proper original song! I'm sure fellow BWF-ers, being true cognoscenti, will have no trouble spotting them all. Yeah, I know the tempo is a bit too fast and the groove is hardly authentic, but hey, give me a break - it was 33 years ago, I was still kinda green behind [...]

Willie Tee: Loneliness and Bring On The Heartaches From: I'm Only A Man [Capitol, 1970] Apologies for the lateness but I just wanted to put up a post in tribute to Willie Tee who passed away just a little over a year ago now. I've featured music from Tee's band the insanely funky Gaturs before on the site but never really posted up anything from his solo period and can't seem to find anything much on the other blogs I check (believe it or not I'll [...]

... They didn't say anything. The man and the woman moved closer to each other, The round table between them. The stove was still on and burned the empty pot. She started to get up. One of them shot her. She leaned over the table like a schoolgirl doing her lessons. She thought about being beside him, being asleep. They took her long gray socks Put them over the barrel of a rifle And shot him. He went back in his chair, holding himself. She told him [...]
