A lot of people have a lot of good things to say about folk musician Willy Porter, the singer-songwriter who will perform this Sunday evening at the Majestic Theatre in Madison, including the folks at Billboard who said: "Porter accentuates well - rendered tales with spit-fire percussive acoustic guitar strumming and… chord picking." This seems appropriate for Wisconsin, which seems to be full of spit-fire at the moment, especially considering it will be coming from a Wisconsin native. Originally from the Milwaukee area, Porter graduated from UW-Eau Claire and first began performing music live in 1990. [...]

The folk-popper/acoustic guitar maestro teams up with a string quartet. Hardly a novel concept, but it works more often than not. Wisconsin singer-songwriter Willy Porter has spent his 15-year career producing agreeable, Adult AOR, Alternative-friendly folk-pop. Despite his virtuoso acoustic guitar playing, often-catchy songs, and charismatic live shows, though, he's only occasionally tasted mainstream success. Live at BoMA isn't going to change that, but it isn't meant to. Recorded with Columbus, Ohio's Carpe Deim String Quartet, the mini-album features guitar-and-strings renderings of seven Porter tracks. The collaboration works best when Carpe Diem is content to shade...
Most singer/songwriters can't help but bring a rather self-centered vision to their music. When it's simply you, your voice and guitar or piano, the focus is often pretty limited, even with a talented producer on board. Natalia Zukerman , however, brings a decidedly different and welcome perspective. A world-class guitarist -- acoustic, electric, pedal steel -- the Brooklyn-based performer approaches her songs not only as a compelling writer and vocalist but with the added dimension of being an instrumental member (so to speak) of a group of players . As the follow up to her auspicious '08 album [...]
The Counting Crows are back on tour with their traveling circus featuring NOTAR and Augustana. The Crows kick things off at Summerfest, which is already ongoing with tons of bands including Earvolution favorite Willy Porter, the Hold Steady, Modest Mouse, Levon Helm and Halestorm. Last year's dates with Michael Franti drew some strong praise, so no surprise Duritz and crew are trying to

Words : David Schultz Focusing primarily on Tibet, the Rubin Museum hosts a wide selection of art from the Himalayas region. It's not a venue typically associated with music much less one to feature one of the country's preeminent, though unheralded, guitarists. Then again, as many who have seen Willy Porter would attest, a museum might be the proper locale for his prodigious skills. The Wisconsin-based guitar wizard's latest New York City appearance came as part of Naked Soul, the Rubin's unique [...]
By: David SchultzA Segovia with the wit of Phil Ochs, Wisconsin singer-songwriter and guitarist nonpareil Willy Porter can do things with an acoustic guitar that seem impossible until you see him play. When he gets going, his dexterity defies physics. Like Tom Morello and Vernon Reid, the guitar just seems to bend to his will and serves as an extension of his body and soul as opposed to a simple

Willy Porter is a mid-west boy through and through. He's quite successful in the Chicago market as well as surrounding markets like Milwaukee, Madison, Ann Arbor etc. His Midwestern values shine through on the title track of his new record called "How To Rob A Bank". It's a bitter look at the way large corporations have plundered the nation. Instead of barging down the door and heading straight for the vault the robber in "Bank" joins the bank's board, hangs out in country clubs "farting in velvet couches", and begins his corporate raiding. The song [...]
