It's easy to lose track of time when there is a lot going on in your life. I didn't realize how long it had been since I posted here, and the main reason is I've been busy trying to figure out my car situation. My car's motor blew out about 3 weeks ago and most [...]

There are a lot of great things going on with this song. The first is the groove: it's undeniable. A nine-and-a-half minute take on the old Wilson Pickett classic (by the same name), the California Honeydrops (their name-another great thing about this band) infuse the original soul classic with a little more swing, a little more optimism. While the original was almost a plea, this one seems to be more of a suggestion. The band themselves have a great story and the track shows each off each of their individual abilities as well as their combined funkiness. The lead singer [...]

Hurray once more for the mighty Tompkins Square label, as the wise people in charge there just re-released Bill Wilson's fine fine Ever Changing Minstrel album, originally recorded in 1973 with the same bunch of pickers you hear on Dylan's Blonde On Blonde . In honour of that, here's a ten pack of boss tunes by guys called Wilson. Brian was off somewhere alas, but brother Dennis showed up instead. Better get ready! For the third installment in our lists about time, I'm taking it down a notch and focusing in on songs about the seconds, minutes, and hours that we could use to be productive if we weren't listening to songs about seconds, minutes, and hours. Time is a topic I've wanted to tackle [...]

Here's something soft and downtempo for your free downloading pleasure. Amplicity is Jamie Diecidue from New Jersey. The track is I'm In Love , with samples from Wilson Pickett and the film Gone With The Wind . It is driven by a lazing acoustic guitar samples and some distorted rolling hand claps. There's just an edge of glitch to stop it becoming too soporific. He calls it "a track for feeling fine" which sums it up perfectly. This is a beautiful tune. http://www.highlinesounds.com/

After the Stones released their first LP, they set out for the US in the summer in 1964. They didn't exactly conquer America. On the heels of the Beatles success here before them, they arrived with no big hit record to promote and to less fanfare than they were used to back home in the UK. The first leg of their tour was marked by poor attendance and a US Television debut in which they were ridiculed by host Dean Martin on Hollywood Palace. Still, remarkable things were happening. At the San Antonio [...]
Soul artists covering rock songs. It's typically what you use to impress friends on a party playlist. This week, I'm taking them for what they really are; pure brilliance. I've known for a while that a list of cover songs was absolutely necessary. The question is, how do I tie it down? [...]

Roger Daltrey of The Who Our greatest rockers are people who apparently never used their "indoor voice." Why should they? They were future rockers! Anyhow, the other day I was thinking that the one ingredient basic to any good rock and roll song - besides a guitar solo, of course - is a blood-curdling scream. It could be an expression of rage and defiance, like Roger Daltrey's classic scream at the end of "Won't Get Fooled Again," or it can be a cathartic release of pain and frustration, like John Lennon in "Well Well [...]

Donald "Duck" Dunn Bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, whose swampy thick bottom grooves anchored many of the classic soul hits from the 1960s, has died at the age of 70. He was on a tour of Japan with his friend and former bandmate in Booker T. and the MGs, Steve Cropper. Dunn, an integral part of the Memphis soul sound as bassist for the MGs, the house band for Stax and Volt records, died Sunday morning after finishing two shows at the Blue Note Night Club in Tokyo, Cropper said in a posting on his [...]
It's time for another installment of Flashback Friday's and this time we're going way back in the alley to 1971 for Wilson Pickett and his tune Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You. I've wanted to write this article since last month when I bought my new (old) bicycle. It's a Schwinn SS from 1971 in great condition with all the original parts from the factory in Chicago. Naturally my next step was to try and pin point its personality with a song from the year of its creation and Mr. Pickett won this decision hands down. [...]

Andy Shernoff was always the main creative force behind one of New York's best bands ever, the Dictators. He wrote the material and sang the leads. In the royal line of succession for NYC bands in the '70s, they came along right after the birth of the New York Dolls. Every bit as raw, noisy [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Rick Diamond/WireImage Steve Cropper was amazed to learn recently that he has played on more than 3,000 records. Many of those have been stone classics, such as Otis Redding 's '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay,' Wilson Pickett 's 'In the Midnight Hour' and Sam and Dave 's 'Soul Man,' on which Sam Moore famously hollered "Play it, Steve!"
