(Art is by Frank R. Paul ) If, like me, you have been reading this blog for some time, then as well as finding comfort in the reassuringly regular infobombs of ectoplasmic synth goo, post-nuclear pop, and technocratic techno, from time you time you probably wonder: what exactly IS the selection process for the MP3s the xxjfg creatures so lovingly yet obsessively curate? More than ever, the amount of available music now resembles a raging data sea, unfathomable and infinite - how do the xxjfg decide which particles of this bitstorm are the ones worth [...]

"From time to time, there will come along someone a little younger, a bit more talented and better looking. In 1993, Leonardo DiCaprio blew us away on the silver screen. 2005, Christiano Ronaldo scored in his opening game for Manchester United. In 2010, Urban Cone entered our world and nothing will ever be the same again. Just scratching the surface, you’ll find kind of “perfect” pop music. Go deeper and you´ll discover something very unique." Enter Urban Cone . The Stockholm-based pop connoisseurs have earned tons of buzz with the release of their synthpop single "Kings and [...]

New York residents by way of Sydney, WIM offers piano driven melodic rock featuring controlled guitars, delicate arrangements and big rich choruses sung in harmony. Released in November, the band's self titled debut album is hauntingly pretty and occasionally also punchy and fun. WIM just wrapped up four shows at SXSW and is now back in the Big Apple for an April residency at Pianos. The first of these shows is slated for Thursday, April 12th. In May, WIM will be jetting off to the UK to play the Great Escape Festival. - Corinne Bagish

Filter Magazine's Culture Collide SXSW showcase at Bar 96 on Saturday 3/17 was exactly that. photos by Amanda Hatfield Other Lives @ Bowery Ballroom on 2/17 " Other Lives ' sound is lush and rich, full of varied but precise instrumentation. Each member seamlessly switched from violin to guitar, trumpet, keyboard, bells, cello, percussion, harmonium etc., somehow getting to their instruments just at the right time in every song. Their CD Tamer Animals is a gorgeous reproduction of their sound, but seeing them live was an altogether different and wonderful experience. Watching the set up [...]
Last night I went to the Red Palace to see Oklahoma-based band Other Lives. I've been a fan of them for quite a while and they have been generating some well-deserved buzz. The show was sold out and it was quite packed - they probably could've sold out an even larger venue, honestly. First up was Australian-based Wim. I knew nothing about them before the show but I was impressed. The 5-piece

After a freakish water main break that turned most of the Bowery area into a large body of water the night before, Bowery Ballroom cleaned itself up in time to welcome Other Lives and supporting bands WIM and Lucius on Friday night. Indie folk band Lucius was a pleasant start to the evening. Dressed in dapper retro attire, singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig performed a set of catchy and upbeat tunes showcasing their beautiful, crystal-clear vocal harmonies that make each song shimmer. They even paid homage to the late [...]

Leo Zero By Stef Siepel The weekly froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy. Track of the Week: ‘Down the Drain’ by Leo Zero Leo Zero is back with a new track, and I love those boogie-woogie drums at the start there. [...]
Following WIM’s recent US dates, & to coincide with the N. American release of their debut self-titled album, Modular Records is pleased to share a remix of their new single “Something For... **Summary** Go to website for downloads, videos & more.
WIM did not fail to impress us when they were one of the many bands to represent Australia last month during Culture Collide , and we're glad the invasion of Oz bands hasn't stopped since then. Returning to L.A. with their dramatically lush orchestrations in support of their self-titled debut (out today via Modular Recordings), the rock quintet consisting of members Simon Jankelson, Martin Solomon, Saul Wodak, Harry Thynne and Dustin Bookatz will please fans of Grizzly Bear, Arcade Fire and, perhaps, a heavily sedated Patrick Wolf. A lot of noise can be made from a band that [...]
