wimple winch - "save my soul" (download) wimple winch - "lollipop minds" (download) Wimple Winch was a mostly-unknown British group back in the 602s. They were considered just another "Merseybeat" band who wanted to ride on the Beatles ' coattails. Originally calling themselves Just Four Men , they didn't start gaining their cult following until they changed up their [...]

Though Shazam may be one of the least frequently appearing "regular" posts, they are still among my favorites to do. In this most recent edition we have yet another example of technology helping me to discover a band that classic rock radio has long forgotten. My ears perked up right away when I heard their ominous guitar riff over the PA a t the House of Blues while waiting for The Dead Weather to set up. I immediately pegged the Munsters theme sounding jam as a 60's tune, but it had just enough of that gritty lo-fi [...]
I usually try and focus on contemporary music with these Hype Device columns. After all, the entire point is to bring some attention to under looked, but deserved bands. There will always be some groups and songs that are over looked. Even with an entire collection of music that deserves to be heard, not all can be worshiped. Thus, this edition of Hype Device will focus on songs and artists that deserve some reparations (...of hype) to offset the deficiency of attention they received when they were releasing music. So hype we will. Retroactively, [...]

They never produced a full length album, but the UK's Wimple Winch managed to put out a string of amazing singles starting in 1966. While it's painfully apparent that you can find the Who's influence in many of their songs, the dirty, psych riffs stand up more than okay on their own. Also.. 'Save My Soul's' guitar freakouts shred real hard, so The Who can go fuck off and play pinball somewhere. Wimple Winch - Save My Soul Wimple Winch - Atmospheres Wimple Winch - Marmalade [...]
Another shot of garage, pop and psych from the Jukebox. Picking a few of the gems from the discarded remains of the psychedelic detritus and skewing to a harder edge of the garage this week, a gritty sense of self-righteousness and a whole lot of swagger and sneer. [MP3] The Mooche - Hot Smoke and Sassafras A low, dirty rock and a heavy blast of organ announce the arrival of The Mooche. This is just out of the garage and heading towards the arena sounds of heavy psych. This song [...]
