Most Likely To: chunk up your iTunes if you do a little gardening. Welcome to the Night Sky is a new pinnacle on the face of the mountain that Wintersleep has been fearlessly scaling for the past six years. Not only has it been treacherous and slippery, the air is getting thinner and there are no alternate instructions for cooking preparations above 6,000 feet. Naturally, it's going to be a lot harder to bake a quality cake. Experience is going to win the prize on this one; thank [...]

Not much to say, except that the songs below have infinitely made my day brighter. I hope they do the same for you. I went to sleep last night and when I openned my eyes, I saw this song standing next to my bed, begging to get in and snuggle . If it happens to find you as well, please let it in. The vocals alone, quivering and shaky enough to wake you up at first but growing large and warm over the fantastic four minutes, are [...]

Well, memorable is kind of an understatement when describing this past holiday week in New York. While it may have been filled with good times (getting back with my old band and laughing so hard I cried, seeing Slumdog Millionaire with my brothers, etc) it also had it's horrible times (missing the last train to Grand Central because of a detour on RT. 9, losing my luggage, etc) and it's bizarre times (I found that people who seem overwhelmingly overpowered by their luggage on the conveyor belt mildly amusing, I unabashedly find Dick Clark more interesting now that [...]

Gig Of The Week - Vivian Girls - Brixton Windmill Brooklyn's Vivian Girls have had a whirlwind 2008. Recently named in Rough Trade's 50 albums of 2008 (#9, no less), the band follows support slots with Deerhunter, Fucked Up and Love is All over in the States with a couple of shows here in London. The first is the peach, set in the dark, cramped surroundings of Brixton's tiny Windmill venue. The sound is resolutely lo-fi, with hints of Sarah Records influence along with classic girl group vs Jesus And Mary Chain noise. So [...]

Portugal. The Man photo by Abbey Sarah Palin may have put Wasilla, Alaska on the map of most American's consciousness. Lucky for me, it was Portugal. The Man who introduced me to the town of Wasilla, Alaska and for that I have a much more positive association with the place than the average Seattlite. So, I highly recommend that you get out of your turkey coma and head over to El Corazon for a stellar line-up featuring Wintersleep , Earl Greyhound , and Portugal. The Man . You will never think of [...]

In 2007 I saw Songs From A Room three times from August to December . The fact that I had only planned on seeing them one of those times is a testament to what a hard working band they are, as well as the caliber of bands that they have had the privilege of sharing the stage with. Their first EP was a throat shredding, mind numbing display of post punk with a leaning towards the hardcore. Yesterday, the band released their latest EP for digital download on iTunes and Dine Alone [...]

Seeing as how we're celebrating the launch of our new Halifax-centric design today, and because Bryan alluded to them a couple times, today seems like as good a day as any to post the winners from the recent Nova Scotia Music Awards . Oh, that reminds me, did we mention that the hill was runner-up for best blog in the Coast's Best Of Halifax '08 poll ? Well I guess we did now. But many thanks to anyone who cast a vote for us, and heads up Living Between Wednesdays , we're coming for [...]

Yet another slow release week. Damn the Christmas season. The only release I'm actually excited about is Burial's . Last year's Untrue was a 2007 favorite. And Denison Witmer could be good. Really, though... what else is going to be worth listening to this week? I don't even know. An album from Kevin Costner ? That could be interesting. Who wants to take bets on how many songs I get through before I have to shut that one off? :: Adversary [...]

After four months away from family and friends, I am returning to my hometown of Fishkill, NY for four days. While I'm out there I'll be attending both the NYC and Hartford, CT dredg shows as well as meeting some old friends. I try very hard to hide my homesickness. I try to come off like I have quickly adapted to the 'California Lifestyle,' but in reality, this trip is very important to me. I miss my family and I miss my friends. It's so good to feel that comfort again... [...]
Tonight DC has a pair of solid shows, the first being Neva Dinova playing thos salty tunes at DC9 with McCarthy Trenching. Both bands have new records out. Wintersleep. or Winterpills. Winterpills - You Don't Love Me Yet Wintersleep - Weighty Ghost P.S. I'm really loving the music from the Swedish one man orchestra Tvärvägen . They just released an amazing video of their song "September". Check it out below. Tvärvägen - September from Henrik Ohberg on Vimeo .

(photo by Scott Munn) We are completely and utterly enthralled in how beautiful a simple song by this group of Canadians called Wintersleep have created in "Weighty Ghost", off their upcoming third full length, Welcome To The Night Sky . It's fully lilting, dreamy pop that makes you smile and well up with tears like you haven't done since some of the forebearers of this emotive sound (cf: Eric's Trip, Smog) made you feel like that was totally okay.
