It's unfortunate that a lot of bands go largely unnoticed, especially when you can see that they would fit in with so much going on, both past and present. Such is the case with Sarandon , who've just released their new album, Sarandon's Age of Reason , in the States via Slumberland Records . Now, this isn't going to be your normal SR release, mostly because the band have a much more proto-pop-punk feel to them, with the sort of delivery of [...]

If you've ever had the visceral pleasure of experiencing New York duo Matt & Kim thrash themselves about on a sticky stage, hurling themselves atop keyboards and drumkits in feverish glisten, Sidewalks, their third long player may go some way to clarifying their frenzied fantasies, ratifying their excellence all the while. From the vaguely hip hop tendencies of recent single Cameras to the electronica smattering of Good For Great (seemingly aptly set for Weezy backing track), the pair devise a quite unique synthesis of (other)worldly Yeasayer schizophrenia and unadulterated exuberance to concoct an intoxicating potion of understated potency, [...]

Toronto - We are back with our weekly installment of shows this week. Back and fully recovered from Austin, it's time for us to look at our own city, I guess. Destroyer Lee's Palace, March 31st. With Kaputt , Dan Bejar might have just put out one of the best albums of the year. The 9th album by this band, Kaputt is just a breezy cool affair. This show is sold out, but we will be there. Destroyer - Chinatown by VancouverIsAwesome [...]

One of the funniest things to me about David Simon's seminal show The Wire, was the repeated comparison by the media to "Dickensian" literature. Throughout the show's run you couldn't read anything about the show, without encountering the phrase: "the Dickensian aspects of The Wire." Or something to that effect. It was frankly annoying, because the people throwing around that term probably who no fucking idea what they were saying. It got so bad that by season 5, Simon wrote a newspaper editor character who would constantly throw the same term around regarding various stories at [...]

The previews are loose & I was going to do a review, but the album's such a disappointment it's not worth it. Instead I have made a visual guide, with the tracks arranged in order of my opinion from best to worst.
(Album artwork: Does it indeed affect our listening experience, and if so, how? Scratch the Surface takes a look at particularly interesting and/or exceptional cover art choices.) There is a temptation to romanticize: a photograph of a barren flagpole; a pink, painted-on banner waving from the apex; a hazy blue summer sky behind; a simple, [...]

I love Wired. Kate Bond and Michael Duke host an amazing acoustic night here every month and as always they showcase some of London's finest young musical talents. This month we saw the likes Daley, Cleo Sol and um, Will Heard. Yeh 'who?' was exactly my reaction when he walked into the spotlight and screamed [...]
… on Jan. 25, Pollard released his latest solo album, Space City Kicks, on Guided By Voices Inc. which opened the floodgates on a slew of new releases coming from the ultra-prolific songwriter this year. He recently reunited with former GBV guitarist Doug Gillard for another Lifeguards release, Waving at the Astronauts. That album was [...]

There's times when you hear a singers voice for the first time and your taken in an instant. It was in 2009 that I first heard Cleo Sol, although back then she was known as Clea. It was on the track 'Riding for Love' which was produced by her long time producer Davinche and also [...]
Teenage Panzerkorps are more than revivalists in the songwriting sense. Their sounds recall the kraut-rock of Can and Neu! with a cutting-edge lo-fi allure, vast and tributary enough to appear like a fusion of albums one obtained through trading cassette tapes in the '80s. If you were a punk enthusiast born in the late '60s/early [...]
Here's Hounds Of Hate's creepy new music with a creepy new video. If those guys ever bought the farm -God forbid, knock on wood, hail Mary full of grace- people would say stuff like 'they were too weird to live'. That's about the best posthumous compliment anyone can receive.

Wire from The Low Anthem In the final ramp up to their release of their album, Smart Flesh, tomorrow The Low Anthem release their first video for their new track "Wire" above. The video of "Wire" is a completely instrumental track and features band leader Ben Miller or at least the shadow of him dancing to the music. You can pre-order the album on Amazon now on CD , Vinyl, [...]
