Singer-songwriter Spencer Krug, a man known for his eccentric and drawn-out tunes in bands like Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, has released a new track with his more experimental side project, Moonface. A new album has been announced. The title: Heartbreaking Bravery . It's a collaboration with the band Siinai, and is set to release April 17 on Jagjaguwar. Siinai is a band that hails from Finland and accompanied Wolf Parade on a tour back in 2009. The song they've put out abandons the focus on specific instruments like the previous Moonface releases did with the marimba [...]

Last year, Moonface put on one of the best shows I've seen in recent memory. Read the review over at Exclaim! , and also read my album review and my preview of his upcoming With Siinai: Heartbreaking Braver y. Speaking of that new album, the song "Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips" is below. Looks like Spencer Krug ditched the long-form style.

Spencer Krug is returning to his Moonface project and will release With Siinai: Heartbreaking Bravery on April 17th through Jagjaguwar. Download the first single "Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips" below and check out the track listing for the new album. Read more »

Moonface is the project of Spencer Krug , who is one of the vocalists and creative minds behind the great indie rock band Wolf Parade , as well as Sunset Rubdown . He teamed up recently with Siinai, a Finnish band of some sort. The details are a little arduous, but the results are pretty good. Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips is the lead single for the album and the sound is familar to anyone who has backgroud knowledge on Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown. Moonface will be releasing their album on April 17 [...]

On April 17th, Spencer Krug returns with another album from Moonface , the follow-up to last year's Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped . Titled Siinai: Heartbreaking Bravey , the 10-track effort is a collaboration with Finnish band Siinai, who previously toured with Wolf Parade in 2009 as Joensuu 1685. Recorded in Finland, the album pits Krug behind the mic and keyboard, while Siinai performs "the meat of the music," according to the album's press release. If one couldn't tell by the title already, the album revolves around - [...]

In the long ago days that we called 2006, the stars aligned, money appeared and I secured a press pass to Iceland Airwaves. I flew alone to Reykjavik and took in the festival. It's always a well curated affair that takes over most of the small 101 district. The charm lies in the close proximity of all the venues, the beauty of the city and the kindness of the locals. The first night I met a couple who offered up great conversation and a couch to crash on, as my hotel was a bit of [...]

Dan Boeckner Edition Last week's Power Play featured a playlist of songs from musicman Spencer Krug. It only seemed fitting to make this week's themed around his colleague and music-mate, Dan Boeckner . The yin to Krug's yang, Boeckner split vocal roles in the band Wolf Parade, offering a contrasting style and sound that allowed WP to explore different soundscapes. Boeckner also made sweet music with his wife Alexie Perry and delivered some incredible work as Handsome Furs. If you really want to delve [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Photo by Michael Wells Words by Chris There's a lot of Raptures these days. Tuesday we're gonna die, Thursday we're gonna die. The good news is that it's all bullshit and nothing really matters! Nick Thorburn is back — well, back at recording with Islands, after a Mister Heavenly tour this past year. The Canadian avant-pop maestro will be releasing A Sleep & A Forgetting on February 14, but has let slip "This Is Not A Song" for your listening pleasure. A slowed [...]

BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]
Canadian husband-wife duo Handsome Furs released the music video for "Serve the People", a track off their 2011 album Sound Kapital. Members Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Atlas Strategic) and Alexei Perry met the video's director, Han Xia, during their 2009 tour. They met during a show in Beijing, when Xia was a film student at

Man, you've got to love it when a band throws caution to the wind and actually goes into the studio without a bunch of pre-programmed tracks to build on. This is just such the case with UK outfit Tribes , who've just released their We Were Children EP , which is the precursor to their album, Baby , which should make its way over here in January. From the get go, it's got a bit of that off-kilter warble that you might remember from early [...]
