As you may already know, but I'll state it nonetheless for those who do not, I have a weekly radio show on KSVR Mount Vernon, KSVU Hamilton and KSJU Friday Harbor. You can tune in via the respective dial pinpoints if you live within those townships, or you can stream from KSVR.org . We will be hosting our pledge drive in April, so I thought I'd kick things off by doing something no other station in Skagit or (to my knowledge) the surrounding areas does: a vinyl only night. My March [...]
The Indiecision Five at 5 is our attempt at sharing our musical tastes with you, and showcasing music from around the world. Each weekday at 5pm sharp, one NH7 writer or staffer will bring you five songs he/she is listening to on the day. Today’s Five at 5 is brought to you by stone-hearted graphic artist Atharwa Deshingkar. 1. Wooden Shjips - 'Flight' Wooden Shjips' sound has been described as experimental, minimalist, droney/psychedelic rock and they have been compared to The Velvet Underground and The Doors. While their sound seems too [...]
OK, regular Christmas readers of this organ will remember that it often takes me a while to get into this end of year malarkey, but once I’ve warmed up… So, anyway, I’m venturing forth and starting with some great gigs I’ve been to this year. I’m always a bit sheepish about recounting my gig tally for the year – usually I can do this on the fingers of both hands, although this year I’ve had to take off my shoes and socks too. (I have buddies who talk about getting close to three figures, think about it…) [...]

champoyhate Wooden Shjips started by making crazy/noisy punk-drone records that they would mail you for free—you just had to ask!—and eventually revealed themselves as the California inheritors of that neverending motorik beat. They build riffs for miles, and if they ever invent the extra-extra-extra-long-play record, Wooden Shjips will finally have the space to release their ultimate record. Drummer Omar Ahsanuddin speaks now before the Shjips play the Thrill Jockey anniversary show this weekend . This interview by Chris Ziegler. What’s the practical lesson of Wooden Shjips? You guys didn’t do anything [...]
Each day this week, in anticipation of the deadline for voting on the Festive Fifty 2012 Shortlist , I'll be listening to the Contrast Podcast Festive Fifties of yore (2012's will be the 6th!) and trying to track down the videos of the Top 5! The big drama of last year was the battle for the #1 spot between the HUGE POP HIT and the underground indie rocker. It worked out the way these things usually do, but it was so close for most of [...]
Psych-rock is one of those genres that doesn't need much explaining. It's comprised of bands that hone in on everything that is blistering and loud, usually ending their songs in harsh feedback, or beginning with harsh feedback, or using that ... Continue reading

Words by Brendan All Hallow's Eve is upon us! Wednesday is the day of celebration, the dance of the dead. There's no need for a suave/slutty costume; there's no need for candy; there's no need for jack-o'-lanterns and cobwebs and tombstones. All you need are some friends, some pumpkin beers, and some good fucking music. That's where we come in. Here's a mixtape of Halloweeny tunes for you to play at your party. Some of these bands are as old as the hills, and some I quite literally just heard about [...]

With as much psychedelic pop and rock that I've been listening to lately, it only made sense to put together a full show featuring the sub-genres. Of course, I also threw in some beloved garage rock to keep things sane. For the first time in ages, I took the KSVR and KSVU airwaves and played several older tunes (older meaning 2011 and before), with bands like Wooden Shjips and The Mantles and Comets on Fire. New releases got their fair share of air play as well: recent songs from The Fresh & Onlys, Two Gallants, Sunglasses and [...]

Growing up in semi-rural Washington, specifically in the early nineties, I was always surrounded by a dumbfoundingly random array of neighbors. There were always a collection of traditional red-state, tractor-towin', shit-kickin' Republican families; an abundance of well educated, upper-class elitist families (they may have referred to themselves as familial unit, or whatever happened to be politically correct at the time), and a host of hard-to-peg inbetweeners. However, regardless of whatever neighborhood I found myself in, there was always a Camaro or Trans-am sportin' bad ass. This individual was, almost by default, a single, [...]

Thrill Jockey is planning one hell of a twentieth anniversary celebration for itself. Actually, make that celebrations . The venerable Chicago-based record label is throwing itself birthday shows in its hometown as well as LA, London, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Baltimore, and our fair city. The lineup for the San Francisco show is typical of these gigs' awesomeness, including Liturgy , Wooden Shjips , Trans Am , and Barn Owl , to name [...]

Psych prodigies/ Wooden Shjips side project Moon Duo just announced the release details for their upcoming sophomore album Circles . The new record, which was recorded during a long period of winter isolation in the Rocky Mountains, will be released on October 2nd via Sacred Bones . Here's the first cut off the album, a spacey track entitled "Sleepwalker." Moon Duo - Sleepwalker by sacredbones

The zoned-out San Francisco psych-rock two-piece and Wooden Shjips side project Moon Duo will release their sophomore album Circles this fall. They recorded most of the album in a mountain cabin in Colorado, and they named it after a Ralph Waldo Emerson essay. Below, grab "Sleepwalker," the fuzz-rock stomp that opens the LP. Read More...

Criminey! Was that two weeks ago? Where does the time go? Wooden Shjips Well… two weeks ago (apparently), I went to see San Francisco guitar fiends, Wooden Shjips in the appropriately grimy, down-to-earth surroundings of the Fleece in Bristol. I think I’ve said before how much I like the Fleece, it really is yer bona fide “rock” venue, stone floors, old gig posters, real ale, ridiculously in-the-way pillars, and it really suited the dark, dark sound of Ripley Johnson and the boys. We had a couple of support bands, one [...]

Wooden Shjips, "Lazy Bones"

The night spent staring at strangers and later fearing for a soggy form of inundation, Splashh go on to enliven early on with their umpteenth-hand lo-fi gimmickry, coming across as Watery, Domestic protruding up and out from the slough of muck that The i Arena has unfathomably become overnight. At barely midday, equally unbelievably it's time for Sharon Van Etten . Not only is her scheduling substantially off, but so too is her staging: Van Etten's live show thrives on intimacy. Like a yelping pup abandoned, in a setting such as Cargo, or [...]
