About a year-and-a-half ago, I wrote about how the Rural Alberta Advantage was pretty much the greatest thing since snowmobiles with two skis, and little has changed in that time. Except that the RAA got signed to Saddle Creek, my fave Pitchfork writer gave 'em the thumbs up , and they embarked on a big-ass tour. That tour brings them to Vancouver on the fifth of July, which is a Sunday this year. The show's at the Media Club. We here at ABWAWBA would like to apologize for neglecting [...]
Gone Gone - Julie Doiron & the Wooden Stars The Best Thing For Me - Julie Doiron & the Wooden Stars I can hear a car driving past through my headphones, in between tracks. Little flecks of freezing rain fall into my my hair. Little flecks of reverb splatter my ear drums. Up ahead, across the street, I see someone slip and fall on the ice, but I don't hear it. I guess shure's Sound Isolation Technology works pretty well. Her tumble perfectly coincides with a [...]

A&M records released this Raw Energy label sampler of Canadian indie rock in 1993, featuring a comic strip called "On the Road". Sadly, even though the CD features the likes of Dinner is Ruined, Groovy Religion, HHead, King Cobb Steelie, The Imagineers, Jale, Cottage Industry, Yeti, Wooden Stars, Spool, Wining Dining & Drilling, Deadbeat Backbone, Eric's Trip, and Change of Heart, you should feel free to give it a miss unless you were a Canuck in Ontario or the East Coast at the time. The best of this bunch is below. Sample mp3: Wooden [...]
Those of you who have been waiting with baited breath for the next installment in Hero Hill 's Canadian Mixtape Project can rejoice, as the Ontario selection went up this weekend. If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of this project and recommend that everyone head on over and download it (as well as last month's Nova Scotia installment ). Of course, this time out I have a particular bias, as I was asked to submit some recommendations of my own. Not wanting to make my picks overly redundant [...]
I don't know, the whole Kirby thing is awesome and blowing my mind, and I'm looking forward to the football game on Sunday, but otherwise, I'm just DONE with this week. I don't even want to look at this week anymore, but there's still so much of it left. Mp3: " Saskatchewan " by the Wooden Stars (from the Rheostatics tribute album The Secret Sessions )

I hate 'finding' bands like Wooden Stars. I was happy to know of them, but not really know their material all that well. Then my friend got an advance copy of their new album, People are Different and played it for me. I tried to play it cool, but it wasn't long before the reality sunk in that I now have to buy pretty much everything they've ever done. The disc is great...which really shouldn't be true, since it's their first one in something like eight years. Comeback albums after that long should be comprised [...]
OMGOMG, it's the first video to take the weekly press pic spot! Don Ross - Afraid To Dance Alright, even though dial613 already filled the site's very forgiving words-per-week quota with yesterday's Bluesfest post , you're getting more , wow. You should consider yourself lucky, it's not like it's a pay-per-word situation over here. (And note that that's the only clear distinction between dial613 and Charles Dickens .) Ok, so if you do one thing this week aside from visiting this site and sleeping, it should be watching that video up [...]
