Believe it or not, Mad Mackerel has been around for more than five years now. During that time we've posted more than 4,000 times, and offered more than 5,000 songs for your listening pleasure. And more than three quarters of a million people have paid MM a visit during our lifetime on Google's godawful blogspot and since April 2010 on WordPress. We asked some of the regular MM contributors to give us their top twenty songs since MM first went live and we're also going to give you one big mega-listing shortly, but first up with their personal [...]

If you thought my Ed Harcourt write-up was late, at two-and-a-half months, then you'll love this. Blood Oaths of the New Blues was actually released back in early January, and I've been listening to the promo since late 2012. Sorry. I seem to be on a one-man mission to redefine the expression 'get all the latest music news here'. It's not exactly an album in much of a hurry itself though, so I am giving myself a free pass on this one. There are so many touchstones in here though, I am a bit worried about [...]

Wooden Wand | Hoxton Underbelly, London | 26 April 2013 At last a chance to see MM's most blogged about artist, the wonderful Wooden Wand , whose excellent latest releases Blood Oaths Of The New Blues and The Briarwood Virgins are just the most recent examples from his extensive catalogue of idiosyncratic Americana mixing stripped back folk, alt-country, psychedelia and sprawling indie rock. The venue was (as a late switch from the scheduled Water Rats) the Underbelly in London's oh-so-trendy Hoxton Square, spilling over with look-at-mes [...]
PREVIEW: Wooden Wand - "Southern Colorado Song" from We Have Signal on Vimeo . i had written about mr james jackson toth's recent wooden wand record blood oaths of the new blues , but then i lost 7 months worth of posts. so its gone, forever... oh maybe google cache has it, but its not the same. still i wanted to make mention of it again, to you dear visitors, cause it is quite amazing. i have been a fan for quite a while now, and looking through my archives it looks like [...]
For more than a decade, James Jackson Toth has been recording his multi-faceted brand of Americana, that has sometimes been experimental, psych-folk, country-tinged. On his most recent tour we caught up with James, and he played a couple of songs for us - "Supermoon (The Sounding Line)" and "Days This Long." Both songs come off of his latest album, Blood Oaths of the New Blues , out now on Fire Records .

Here are the very best of our downloads from March's posts together with a few new tunes for your listening pleasure. So close to 30 tracks in all - a perfect playlist to kick off April. Quite Parade - Edge of the Ocean A perfectly judged slice of Canadian indie rock, it is an anthem about a dying town that seems hopeless but is still worth fighting for. . Conner Youngblood - Vegas Kicks off with some ominous ringing guitar over [...]

Wooden Wand has already released the brilliant Blood Oaths of the New Blues this year and the even better news is James Jackson Toth will be hitting the the road with the musicians with whom he created the record (and who had also joined him previously for the superb Briarwood LP) for a European tour in April. The band is made up of David Hickox, Janet Elizabeth Simpson, Jody Nelson and Brad Davis, with harmonium, organ and disembodied vocals being the order of the day. They have also made one (of the many [...]

"I told my baby she was not careful enough, she said 'if I wanted a daddy I'd dig one up'..." Just a couple of lines jumping out at me while listening to Wooden Wand's fine Briarwood album last night. So I'd thought I'd share. And if you'd like to read an interesting conversation between mr. Wand and Hiss Golden Messenger's MC Taylor, just go here and tell 'em I sent ya. Wooden Wand - Motel Stationary
True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

Wooden Wand is the brainchild of singer-songwriter James Jackson Toth. Mixing dusty psychedelia, folksy ballads and conversational acousticana, WW recently released a new album, Blood Oaths of the New Blues on Fire Records. Toth is an incredibly prolific artist, having released dozens of albums, homemade recordings on cassettes and CD-R's, vinyl, side projects and contributions ... Continue reading
Wrapping one's head around the music of Wooden Wand, the ongoing project of idiosyncratic singer/songwriter James Jackson Toth takes some effort. With over 100 releases to his name, from spiraling freak-out ragas and avant-garde experimentation to classic Asylum Records-style folk pop – Toth skips through styles like a zealous host swapping out LPs on the [...]
