Well I am up at GoNorth for the next couple of days - a sort of mini Great Escape, which is itself sort of a mini SXSW. A music conference, basically, but Scottish in size. Now, I assume most of you will have absolutely no interest in the chatter of music panels and all that jazz, but there are plenty of showcases in the evening, mostly for small Scottish bands, so I thought I would pick out some of my favourites because even if you don't happen to be in Inverness tonight, you can still enjoy the bands [...]

'Folk' is a huge umbrella term, and nowhere is that better showcased than on End Game ; the new record from Woodenbox and the latest release from Glasgow's Olive Grove Records . The six-piece (formerly known as Woodenbox With A Fistful Of Fivers) cover a variety of different genres on their new record, where their Mariachi stylings compete with traditional folk, soul and straight-up, guitar-led pop. A vibrant and colourful journey from start to finish, End Game is released today (buy it here [...]

Hello there folks, and welcome back to the internet. I apologise for the lack of a Friday Fives post this week, but after the Sparrow and the Workshop album launch at the Caves on Thursday night I was pretty bloody hungover on Friday and never quite managed to look the internet in the eye all day. It was all shit TV and worse food before wandering into town to do it all again with eagleowl. This week is relatively quiet on the gig front, but there are one or two interesting things happening of which you may wish [...]

Woodenbox are a curious beast; this Scottish alt-folk sextet make music that sounds wonderfully vintage without that horrid "retro" tag—which means you're basically about to listen to something your Dad would've bopped to in the '60s (nothing wrong with '60s music by the way, but I take it those reading will understand what I mean.) Woodenbox have the perfect balance of sing-a-long loveliness with a nod to times of old. This is the first official single taken from their forthcoming second album End Game. They've already released the free track "Roll For Me" [...]
Happy Spring everyone! To kick this season off right, we added some high quality remixes from some of our favorite artists, which includes Dinosaur Jr. and Teen Daze. We're also combining coming releases with recently passed ones. Phoenix , who are ... Read More

Enjoy short films of the musical variety today from Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards showcasing the rich, gorgeous, melancholia of first single Sheets taken from forthcoming album Blindspot . Then there is some leather clad pop cool from Finland's French Films and some rather fine alt-folk from Scotland's Woodenbox . And to finish, some lowdown sleazy garage-blues and drag-act inspired footage from Australia's Delta Riggs for their track Rah Rah Radio . Party on... . [...]

I'd like to start off this weeks post by letting you all know that there won't be a Friday Freebies post next week as I am heading up to Inverness on Wednesday morning for this years goNorth Festival. Instead of sitting in front of my laptop next Thursday night, I will be at the Bloggers Showcase that myself, The Pop Cop and Song, By Toad are putting on. If you're up in Inverness make sure you come along to Blackfriars on Academy St to catch Make Sparks, Sebastian Dangerfield, CD/EX and Yusuf Azak. Right [...]

I don't know whether to be excited at the gorgeous weather, or just drop absolutely everything and run outside immediately. We've had chores to do since last week, but given that glorious weather in Scotland is about as rare as hen's teeth it would rather feel like looking a gift horse in the mouth to scorn this current spell in favour of chores. A gift hen horse thing... oh dear. So yes, forgive me if I rattle out this damn post as quickly as humanly possible and then run outside as fast as possible to embrace the sunshine [...]

Kowalskiy The trouble with writing these Friday Freebies on a Thursday night is that quite often someone posts a cracking free download on the Friday and I don't have time to update the post. This happened last week when my fellow blogger, Kowalskiy posted up his latest free monthly EP, his latest offering was possibly his best to date (do I say that every month?) including tracks from Blue Sky Archives, This Silent Forest, The Sea Kings, The Spook School and my current favourite thing ever - Behold, the Old Bear (who are also coincidentally playing [...]
The South by Southwest madness has already started here in Austin with the Film and Interactive festivals and SXSW Music officially starts on Wednesday. From various sources I have compiled a list of 59 Scottish gigs over the next few days. My head is already spinning. Some caveats on this list. First of all, day [...]
The 2012 SXSW Music Festival kicks off next week with 12 Scottish bands set to invade Austin. Unfortunately the weather forecast suggests that they may be bringing the Scottish weather with them. Nevertheless I'm sure that the barbeques will still be fired up and the margaritas will still flow. On Monday we'll publish the full [...]

With the New Year fast approaches, here's the last in my series of Artists Albums of the Year for 2011. To finish off the year we have some pretty fine choices from the likes of Aerials Up, Inspector Tapehead, Miaoux Miaoux, Woodenbox, The Seventeenth Century, Edinburgh School for the Deaf, Ghost Pants and Sojourner. Villagers by Becoming a Jackel chosen by Debbie Kate ( Aerials Up ) On a bored [...]

Frightened Rabbit Just when I thought I had this weeks Freebies post all finished up cropped two free tunes from two of my favourite bands. First off we have the Frabbit boys with their new Christmas tune, Cheap Gold which you can download for nowt from their Soundcloud page. The band have also just announced that they'll be playing at the HMV Picture House in Edinburgh on the 10th of February. Tickets for the gig are on sale now . The Twilight Sad The other surprise freebie came from [...]

First things first, I must inevitably apologise for the horrendous lateness of this podcast. Between my mum visiting, the gig on Sunday and the Samantha Crain Toad Session we recorded on Monday there just hasn't been enough time to catch up. It's that end of year time, too, when lists are being made, accounts submitted, the last releases of the year tended to and plans for next year being finalised, so just when I thought that I could coast into Christmas, it turns out I actually have just as much work now as at any other time of [...]
