To celebrate its seventh birthday, Paper Bag Records has combined two of our favorite things in music: covers and free stuff. The Seven Year Itch, as Stereogum reports, is a new compilation of cover songs performed by twelve of label's artists, and can be obtained right this very second for free. Just click here . Launched in 2002, Paper Bag Records has emerged as one of he premier indie labels, and for good reason. In its first year, the label released the critically acclaimed You Forgot It In People [...]

Two of the best shows MOKB Presents has ever hosted have involved Paper Bag Records bands. Woodhands , of course, brings the crowd and the party every time we bring them back to Indianapolis, but the most criminally underattended show we've ever hosted was for The Acorn . Of course all this was before Kanye West proclaimed their greatness on his blog . Paper Bag is now releasing a [...]

Review to come. Jen at Narratives has a review of the show. Spot The Groove reviews the show as well and has some photos. Photos: Junior Boys, Woodhands @ Lee's Palace in Toronto (November 6, 2009) MySpace: Woodhands MySpace: Junior Boys

Toronto An interesting, exciting double-billing of electro bands, Toronto's Woodhands and Junior Boys , originally from Hamilton, stopped in at Toronto's Lee's Palace Friday night. Woodhands' energetic, in-your-face electro-pop is a guaranteed party starter; Junior Boys are much more about sexy grooviness. To Woodhands, you jump and scream. Junior Boys call for more restrained behaviour (at least in public spaces). I arrived just shy of 10:30pm. A DJ was on stage amid smoke and the place was already buzzing. And then [...]

Seeing as how this is merely an average Monday morning in November, I'm guessing many of you weren't overly psyched to greet the day. Well, let us turn that around quick fast: with a simple email to us you could win yourself 6 beautiful vinyl albums from Paper Bag Records . Yes friend, you read that correctly, not 1, not 2, and not even 3, but 6 lovely vinyl albums. And I do mean lovely (and somewhat rare): All Paper Bag Records vinyl releases are produced in limited quantities on [...]

It was a busy Thursday November 5th night. With Elliott Brood playing at another show for the rock scene . While the indie electro dance scene at Ritual was Woodhands and Junior Boys (who I sadly miss). Just say it was a crazy danceparty that crazy night. I got to see: Noah Woodhands I haven't been to Ritual and it was my [...]

Junior Boys Lee's Palace is the place to be next Friday night, at least for those who think the square wave is the sexiest sound out there. First you've got Toronto's Woodhands , who favour the extroverted, in-your-face approach, their mating dance consisting of flailing limbs, showers of sweat and thrusting keytars. And at the other side of the spectrum, the smooth electro-soul sounds of Hamilton's Junior Boys , the aural equivalent of the chilled champagne, the casual-but-deliberate brush against the arm and eyebrow arched just so. Two paths; one destination - "where [...]

Frank Yang In my review of Yo La Tengo's latest Popular Songs , I lauded the New Jersey trio for their unbelievable ability to deliver excellent album after excellent album over their 25-year career, and having seen them five times before Saturday night's show at the Opera House, I felt comfortable thinking that same sense of consistency could be applied to their live shows. There'd be a handful of new songs, a brace of old standards and at least a couple unexpected surprises from deep in their catalog. [...]

I was frightfully surprised by Woodhand's performance. I had enjoyed the album quite a bit, save for the opening track, but I hadn't expected the depth and complexity that came with a Woodhands live performance. They were pure explosions going off at random intervals. What does that mean? Madness, that's what. It was dancy and electro and everything that you could possibly want from live music, with out any of the fluff. What do you think their name is, Fluff hands? heck no. Woodhands - Be Back Soon [...]
Montreal DJ/producer CFCF (aka Michael Silver) has repeatedly won me over with his electronic pop remixes of HEALTH, Sally Shapiro, The Presets, and Woodhands. Now he sets his sights on an album of... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Frank Yang One can't help but feel some satisfaction that the gossip king's much-ballyhooed tour should be undone so quickly by the sort of offstage drama that's typically the bread and butter of gossip bloggers. Not even a week into the tour and co-headliner Ida Maria was already generating the wrong sort of buzz , playing gigs drunk and disinterestedly, then walking off the stage in Boston and cancelling New York due to "illness", to say nothing of weak attendance throughout. So it wasn't much surprise that [...]
I spent considerable time with Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt of Woodhands this past weekend at Monolith Music Festival. They are likely my two most favorite new people of 2009...no disrespect to any of you other new 2009 friends. But seriously, these two are pretty great, both on stage and off. Their incredible Monolith set featured Dan crowd surfing while playing his keytar...as if just rocking a keytar wasn't entertaining enough! Director, Rob Pilichowski recently put together this pretty great mini documentary recounting an October 2006 party featuring the [...]
