It's been a while since Radio Free Chicago has heard from Rachel Angres, the gal who makes for half of RFC's French Jew population, and that's sort of shame. I'm of the opinion that everything that Rachel posts has an off-beat lovliness about it. Remember her post on the Sandwitches from July ? Couple that with the fact that the girl sure can think up a snazzy title for an article on a cool band you've never heard of and we have ourselves a winner! So, without further ado, here are five sweet new tunes from Miss Angres that [...]

As the founders of Fuck It Tapes , the psychedelic/freak-folk outfit Woods have seen seen much of their roster move on to bigger press (Wavves, MV&EE, Vivian Girls, much more) but it doesn't seemed to have phased them much. These guys are hype darlings with some backbone, content to quietly perfect their craft and let the rest work itself out. Their upcoming Songs of Shame is more extroverted and less antiquated than 08's At Rear House , and is pushed out of the womb with such fervor that [...]
Something about the nonchalant, folk rockery of Woods just screams "obscure"--even if the band's music has got them headed in the direction of popularity. There's a sterile distance the music's delivery, making it less warm and encompassing than most lo-fi do-it-yourselfers. Though there's not much in the way of fog and haze, Woods maintains the mysterious portrayal of bands like Crystal Stilts while keeping it down to Earth with simple, garage rock instrumentation. This track is from the band's upcoming LP, Songs of Shame. Look for it here in April. [...]

Who? Stuart And Caan What? Lo-fi weirdo folk Sounds like? Devendra Banhart's album with the long title 'Oh Me Oh My', Daniel Johnston, Woods I discovered Stuart And Caan when i read about them touring with Devendra Banhart. I'm not sure whether this information is correct and franktly don't really care. Their lo-fi campfire songs are just too good not to listen to. I've got a thing for this kind of lo-fi stuff, I must admit. The first album of Devendra Banhart is one [...]

This week, we're starting our 2008 music recap. A lot of great albums and tunes graced the year of '08. We're not sure how many shows it will take, but we're going to fit in as many cuts as possible. Of course, this has to start chronologically, so we started off with some of the best releases that opened up this year. It's a podcast from the past! From their self titled album [ buy ], Woods Family Creeps ' Twisted Tongue is a perfect example of deliciously skewed 60's-inspired neo-psych/folk: offbeat lyrics, raw vocals and a melody that will be stuck in your head for days. RIYL: Super Furry Animals , Broken Social Scene and Neutral Milk Hotel Twisted Tongue mp3 My Big Bonus MP3s Strike Again: Super Furry Animals: Baby Ate [...]

Imagine if there were 2 different bands, Beatles and THE Beatles... or Arcade Fire and THE Arcade Fire... or Radiohead and THE Radiohead. Things would probably get pretty confusing pretty fast, huh? That's why I was befuddled to read the PR email about "THE WOODS TO OFFER DEBUT ALBUM ON PLUG RESEARCH." I assumed, naturally, they were talking about the Meneguar side project Woods that I'm always on about (though, granted, the "debut" part threw me). But in the end, it wasn't Woods at all- the subject of the email wasn't Woods at [...]

Oh the phrase "freak folk"! How the New York Times and other media outlets abuse these comedic term! What's so freaky about folk music? What's so freaky about freak folk music? Can't a group of drug addled twenty somethings continue in musical tradition without being labeled "freaks"? I know little about Woods Family Creeps. They've recently became a trio. They are on tour. This album is on limited pressing. I only know they should be heard. "End to End" opens the album with moans, whistle, and friendly advice: "By the time it goes away please get [...]

Well not much better news could come down the pipe than another record from the Woods/Meneguar/Shepherds camp. This time Woods make room for one more in their tent, expanding to a trio in the form of Woods Family Creeps. Still riding the bedroom vibe high, the band are the current kings of lo-fi. Constantly on the balance of din and pop, when the tempos are pushed a bit into pop territory some brief and shining moments emerge but just as you settle in the melodies evaporate into the night. But the thing about Woods is that when those beautiful moments [...]
