Jobs were passed down generationally between strangers. One guy became an editor at a magazine, but used to be a music buyer at Mondo Kim's on St. Marks. My friend got the job and started a shoegaze band with a tall guy named Brad that had a huge beard and a couple large cats. Brad moved away and then two different guys joined and the band got way darker. It felt like every musician in New York was in Black Dice at some point. Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio produced a record for Telepathe, a band that used [...]

It's a transitional time for Brooklyn's Woods , as the indie rock band prepares to move out of their recording studio and home Rear House and welcomes a new drummer to the fold. On the heels of last year's Bend Beyond LP, the quartet will mark the new chapter with the release of a new 73 in July that will include a cover of The Kinks' "God's Children" on the b-side. The track was written by Ray Davies and originally recorded in 1971 for the soundtrack to Percy . [...]
Da de tre venner Björn Lydén, Nikolaj Thorenfeldt og Søren Christensen i 2004 slog dørene op for den første udgave af Aarhus-festivalen Pop Revo, foregik det i Musikcafeens hyggelige rammer. Blandt de optrædende fandt man flotte navne som legendariske The Clientele , shoegaze-popperne i The Radio Dept. og danske Oh No Ono . Fra og med i morgen spilles der så op til poprevolution for tiende gang, når Pop Revo løber af stablen på spillestederne Voxhall og Atlas. Festivalen har valgt at vende tilbage til rødderne fra 2004 og sprede sig over tre dage. [...]

By Kenny McMurtrie May 01, 2013 The Primavera Sound festival has been around for over a decade in Barcelona and is now in its second year in Porto. Offering a consistently high level of acts from around the world it is also an important platform for acts from Spain, Portugal and Latin American countries, proof of which is seen this year with such acts as Blur, Bob Mould, Dinosaur Jr., Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Woods rubbing shoulders with The Suicide [...]
Sept. 22, 23 and 28 in Big Sur, Calif. The post Woods, Foxygen, Real Estate to play Woodsist fest appeared first on Treble: Music news, reviews, interviews and more .

I picked up a new toy a few hours before my show. My bike had been in the shop for a few days with a broken spoke and to get a new chain and cassette (the latter of which was a special order item), and I decided to try out a 2012 model Trek. Ended up using my old bike as a trade in and coming home with the new ride pictured above. With this kind of reckless spending, I needed a garage/psychedelic rock kind of night. Here's my playlist for [...]
Over the last month Robert Plant and his latest band, The Sensational Space Shifters, have been appearing on a handful of festival bills, including the ones for High Sierra and the inaugural edition of JamBase Live. So it just seemed like a matter of time before the former Band of Joy front man would drop a full slate of North American dates to keep him busy between fest slots. Yesterday we got just that, as news surfaced that Plant & Co. have lined up a 16-date headlining run that kicks off at the Palladium [...]
From last year's Our House On The Hill LP, the second from the side-project of Woods and Vivian Girls members Cassie Ramone and Kevin Morby as The Babies , has a brand new video for "Mess Me Around." Directed by Scott Jacobson, the free-flowing catchy West coast garage pop soundtracks the nervous misadventures of carpooling with complete strangers on the way to a show at sunset. Check it out below and grab Our House On The Hill today via Woodsist .
The Woods/Vivian Girls side project the Babies released their sophomore album Our House On The Hill last year, and it's one of those albums that seems slight at first but sticks with you. The fast, catchy jangle "Mess Me Around" is a prime example of the album's stickiness, and now it's got a video from director Scott Jacobson . In the video, the band's members hitchhike their way to a show, demonstrating exactly why you shouldn't do that when they meet a ton of nutcases along the way. Watch the video below. Read More...

This past weekend music festival season went into high gear as thousands descended upon Indio for the 12th installment of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival . Earlier this month fest organizers Goldenvoice and the town of Indio reached a long-term deal that would keep the event, along with its country music cousin Stagecoach, there through 2030. According to the LA Times , in addition to the 17-year deal for the April event, Goldenvoice would also be allowed to host two additional concerts each fall starting in 2014, with capacities of 75,000 and 99,000 people respectively. While there [...]
Frank Yang Objectively speaking, there's not a world of difference between Widowspeak's 2011 self-titled debut or the follow-up Almanac , released in January of this year. You can file them both quite comfortably under "the soundtrack to dreams of dusty country roads", not too far from lazy but not inaccurate reference points Mazzy Star and Cat Power, but something about Almanac grabs me the way that Widowspeak , as much as I dug it , didn't. And it's not something as simple as they're getting [...]
Spring may still be struggling to blossom in earnest, although Brighton stalwarts of cult Brit indie-pop British Sea Power floundered not in proffering an evening's worth of potent imitation. Their merch stall strewn with mugs coated in black patinae depicting birds and bees and their stage festooned with darling buds, that it's still light outside by the time we enter the 'Empire would be novel enough on most nights, though Yan, Hamilton et al. really go the whole hog. They begin proceedings with a pretty impromptu acoustic soupçon – a lulling mélange of old, [...]

Tweet Here’s what lead vocalist for Halasan Bazar, Fredrik Rollum Eckhoff had to say about the mix: "I built this hazy mix of organ instrumentals & twangy guitar around the soundtrack for Valeries Week of Wonders, an old weird eastern European psychedelic film. It´s pretty much a homage to Broadcast and their vision, but merged with my own twisted Nordic take on psychedelia, with swedish cosmic organ kings Bo Hannson & Eric Malmberg & the new twang pop of White Fence, Woods & MGMT. Strangely it all blends [...]

It’s Friday afternoon, which means that we’re resolutely ignoring the rain as we contemplate the weekend, and also looking back over the best new songs we heard this week. Over the last seven days, we've gotten all gloomily excited about the new National album, reminded ourselves that Jay-Z can still actually rap every so often, got all summery to new songs by Beaches and Woods, marveled at how beautiful the new Eluvium track is, enjoyed new stuff from Standish/Carlyon and Tin Trails, and more. All these tracks await you below — get streaming and/or downloading, readers! [...]
