![[Review/Listen] – Woods – "Sun And Shade"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3953565_lg.jpg)
Tweet I was pleasantly surprised when I recently heard the music of New York based band Woods for the first time. Surprised and, I have to say, a little alarmed that it took me this long to discover them. I often think that everything worth hearing will at some point roll my way from the wide and wonderful world of the internet, but somehow I happened to hear this band for the first time by seeing them live this week. Funny that what used [...]

I enjoy Stereogum 's mixes better than most of the other indie-oriented blogs on the web. Their latest mix collects some of the newest and best indie Christmas songs that were released this year (many were featured in our Christmas Selections throughout the month). Check out the tracklist and download the mix as a zip file after the jump. Read more » http://rpc.blogcatalog.com/ http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ ping

Don't you love Christmas music? I'm Jewish so mostly it makes me feel like I'm in a mall. But don't you love malls? I've been trying to get my daughter to listen to The Nutcracker , and that's been pretty easy because she's only three and doesn't have a choice. But if Tchaikovsky's not your speed there are always new XMas jams from indie rockers to keep you in the holiday spirit. Once again we've collected this year's additions to the canon since it should only be a Sufjan Christmas so many years in a row. (And once again [...]

Tweet vaso link Why not create a list that's not limited to albums? Actually, I stole the idea to do a 'Favorites' list from Andy after telling him the struggles of choosing my top 10 albums. Sorry, Andy, but it's a damn fine idea. Perfect for someone so musically indecisive as myself. Instead of having to listen to and rank album after album, I was able to thumb through my mind and rabbit-ear the songs I incessantly repeated, the few [...]

Ho ho ho, assholes! With the Christmas holiday coming up this weekend and we're already two days deep up on the Hanukkah tip, it's very much time to drop the annual The Decibel Tolls Holiday Mixer . You know the deal - a carefully curated collection of skewed, brain-burning, monolithic Christmas gems that totally sleigh. Get it?! Sleigh? Slay? It's a homophone, you guys! Ugh... never mind. Tough crowd. Anyway, these yule-time canticles exalted on high can crush shopping malls and magically spike egg nog, true story. For this year's mixer, you'll recognize you'll recognize some jams from previous year's mixers, [...]

It's about time that I posted a Christmas song on the blog this year. Here's Woods ' version of the Vince Guaraldi Trio classic "Christmas Time Is Here." It doesn't deviate too much from the original, but Woods naturally give it a weirdo freak folk update. If there's one singer with a voice that's high and squeaky enough to replicate the children's choir of the original, it's Woods singer Jeremy Earl. If I was feeling picky I would complain about them changing "Christmastime" to be two words, but it's free music, so I shouldn't [...]

2011 was a real chicken-and-egg kind of year in music. Was there really less amazing music or did everything sound a little duller because it was a difficult year for me personally? Was there less sonically interesting music in 2011 or was it because I cut way back on listening to music with headphones? Was there less originality or is it because we're so bombarded with music all the time that it just takes so much more to cut through the sheer volume? While it may have been for personal reasons, it did seem as though 2011 was [...]

Christmas music: seasonal highlight or necessary evil? Whatever your opinion, we're here to help with your party playlist. Worry about more important things--like mistletoe placement.

For those of you that were hoping to stream The Black Keys new album El Camino via sites such as Spotify, MOG, Rdio and the like, may have been taken by surprise when the blues-rock act's record was nowhere to found. Well, it turns out that Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney had a very legit reason for not allowing it to be streamed, as Carney gave this explanation to VH1 - "We decided for this album to not allow music services to stream the entire album, because it's becoming more popular, but [...]

Sad news: Former Sellwood funeral home-turned-music venue The Woods is likely not long for this world. The owners of the Woods are lingering negotiations with their landlord over the lease, and the outlook isn't good. Unfortunately, the property owners are looking to hike up the space's rent, which essentially prices out the venue, necessitating in it closing its doors. (And if that is the case, the property owners have plans for the lot—and comfy, cozy music venue isn't part of those plans.) Lease negotiations remain open until later this week, but the outlook isn't good. Barring a last-minute [...]

There's something endearing and catchy about the non-traditional ways that We Are The Woods approach everything from their marketing to their lyrics. Strong voices, beautiful harmonies, and simple melodies speak volumes over the standard folk scene in Brooklyn and New York. Consisting of Jessie Murphy, Marcia Webb and Tyler Beckwith, the trio offers an interesting blend of quirky song titles that match perfectly with their music, songs that both entertain and make thought-provoking statements simultaneously. After captivating us at The Deli's CMJ "Rootsy Music Stage", We Are the Woods is working on a steady stream [...]
