Gold Fields brand new ep was premiered via Pedestrian on the 16th, with a stream of the 4 track release, including a bonus Gloves remix of "Treehouse". Since impressing the Australian music scene last year, the 5 piece hailing from Ballarat have been on a whirlwind tour of the US repping their soulful, synth-laden indie pop, and are now coming home to a string of shows to celebrate the ep. Here's a few words on each track: "Moves" BOOM. Track one is a sobering slap in the face that grabs the attention. High energy indie rock [...]
Click image to download full album Sounds like: Woods, Real Estate, Warm Ghost "Widowspeak - Nightcrawlers" What's so good? Brooklyn's Widowspeak wowed me with their cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" back in July, and their recently released self-titled album lives up (and exceeds) all expectations. For a band that's relatively new to the scene, they've accomplished quite a bit. According [...]
Tuesday marks the beginning of the fall schedule for new albums. Indie super group Wild Flag , St. Vincent and Neon Indian are among those releasing tomorrow. In two weeks, Wilco puts out its new album . But before we get to those, here's an overdue look at five of the most interesting albums of 2011 (mostly releases from the first half of the year). I'm not sure if they're the best but they have a good shot at being on my year-end top 10. Don't [...]

Last week, the UK's Larmer Tree Gardens hosted a hilariously deep bill for the End Of The Road Festival, a lineup that featured Joanna Newsom, Kurt Vile, Tinawiren, Lykke Li, Best Coast, the Walkmen and dozens of other notables. Elena Morelli was there to magnificently document the epic lineup. There's a peacock in one of her shots. You should find it.

It is true to say that our first visit to the End of the Road Festival last year was without doubt the best music event (bar SxSW) we had ever attended. A superb line-up, brilliant layout, and festival goers who were there for the music rather than the 'experience' ensured three days of superb entertainment. It meant we bought tickets immediately they went on sale for 2011, before we knew the line-up, before we'd even washed the dust off from 2010, and waited impatiently for September to come around again. Granted, for us the line-up this [...]
Ahead of his violating headline slot at The Fleece in Bristol tomorrow night, Matador Records have just announced via their Matablog that a new Kurt Vile offering is on its way in the form of an EP titled So Outta Reach . On November 8th you'll be able to hear "5 original songs initially recorded during the sessions for Smoke Ring For My Halo but not used for the album", AND a Bruce Springsteen cover! Below you can have a listen [...]

On Wednesday , Sept 7th , Kurt Vile brings his current tour to a close in the second from last city on the list, Bristol. Make sure you get your mits on the split 73 available between Vile and the support band Woods . Whilst Smoke Ring For My Halo is easily his best work by far, please find below and indulge in two true gems from his overlooked 2008 début album Constant Hitmaker . The former 'Slow Talkers' showcases a tender solo [...]
Autumn nears and so do my qualms about winter. Needless to say, it always seems like the best music and film arrives during the last one-third of the year. Award considerations aside, one gets the hunch artists want to end the year on a positive note rather than one of nothingness. A looming uncertainty can [...]
Today Barry-Sean and I head off, pop up tents in tow, to the marvellous End of the Road festival in lovely Dorset. Once again sold out, last year's inaugural trip turned into the best festival visit we've ever had, and we're looking forward to more of the same over the next few days. Even the weather forecast is good! Once again we have a huge number of superb bands scheduled to play and to follow our free Truck Festival Mix (RiP) and our Wilderness Festival Mix , here's the third and final instalment - [...]

Releasing one of the year's best LPs in Sun & Shade apparently isn't enough for the ever-prolific Woods. Jeremy Earl and company also put out a 7" in July featuring the single "Find Them Empty" and now have a second 7" available on tour: a 5-song split with Kurt Vile. Check out one of Woods' contributions below: the fuzzy and psychedelic "Skull." If you're a fan of Woods, The Fader ran a great piece on the band's and the Woodsist label's current home-base in Warwick, New York. ( via )

[photo by Maryanne Ventrice ] One of the real joys of seeing live shows is seeing an opening band that just blows you away. That was the case with this opening set from White Fence on a stacked Bowery Ballroom bill led by NYCTaper favorites Woods . White Fence's records are the solo effort Tim Presley, who also does time in the Strange Boys and Darker My Love, so for this show his backing band consisted members of Woods, who handled Presley's material as capably as if it were [...]

Woods and Kurt Vile have put out a summer tour split 7" which features three tracks from Kurt Vile and two from Woods. Check out one of the tracks from Woods, this is Skull. Woods - Skull by user690248

Woods / Kurt Vile – Summer 2011 Tour Split 7" In preparation for their summer tours, featuring a few dates in which they appeared together, Woods and Kurt Vile laid down this split 7" featuring three tracks from Vile and two from Woods. There seem few acts that could have formed a more perfect pairing and the single captures both bands in both their more experimental and song-oriented guises. Vile lays down a bit of a classic cover and two tracks that lean towards his pre-Matador, lonseome road sparseness. On the flip, [...]
Here's a nicely blended sound if I've ever heard one. In The Rosebuds I hear definite notes of Arcade Fire (see the impeccable piano-driven wonderfulness of "We Used To Wait"), but with a more melancholy quality that doesn't exist in the latter. Great mixed vocals, nicely placed moments of blasting percussion, and a sweetly explosive chorus that keeps you coming back for more make "Woods" one of

[Photo by Maryanne Ventrice ] We caught Woods this summer in the unlikely Northside Festival venue of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church ( that recording here ), but it was an equally special treat to see them play the best-sounding venue in Manhattan, Bowery Ballroom . Although the set hewed fairly closely to what we saw back in June, no two Woods shows are alike, and indeed, the jam-heavy favorites "Bend Beyond" and "I [...]

After seeing both Kurt Vile and Woods on their most recent tours, I will continue to kick myself for not scrapping up the cash to pick up their joint 7" (seriously, what was I thinking?). To appease if only the smallest bit of frustration, our friends over at Disco Naivete were kind enough to give us what sounds like a vinyl rip of the track "In/Out Blues". The barren track is lead by a worn in acoustic guitar that fits snugly beneath Vile's spacey slurred vocals. The laid back performance has a wonderful off-the-cuff feel, as if you [...]

Prior to performing alongside each other for a handful of dates in early September, Kurt Vile and the members of Woods are releasing a tour-only, five-song 73. The album features three songs by Kurt Vile and two by Woods. You can listen to one of Vile's songs, "In/Out Blues" below (via Disco Naïveté ; thanks to Consequence Of Sound for the heads up). Kurt Vile — In/Out Blues [ Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
