Tuesday saw the release of Woodsman 's latest album Rare Forms via Lefse Records , an album that's quickly becoming one of my favorites of 2011 thus far. I've been needing something heavier in the rock department, and formerly suspected that this year would be a return to the organic elements of music making, sparked by primarily by chillwave backlash. If there's a single song of the year that marks that turning point, there's none better than Woodsman's "Insects" » [MP3] Woodsman - [...]
If you find yourself tiring of familiar sounds while sitting atop the peak of modern critically acclaimed psychedelia, consider Young Prisms' debut Friends for Now, an exhilarating breath of suspended free-fall into phosphorescent abyss. Eschewing the languorous nature of most shoegazer bands, Young Prisms enter realms of impertinent and concentrated rocking.

The quartet should expect to add a few more Facebook friends now that its latest LP, 'Rare Forms,' has seen a nationwide release from Lefse ( How to Dress Well [...]

Woodsman is an experimental ambient post-psychedelic band based in Denver, CO. The quartet contains two totemic percussionists and two sonic animators who employ electric guitars, feedback loops, and recorded samples to build the dreamy astral soundscapes that define Woodsman's sound. Influenced by hazy mountain passes, the cinema of Stan Brakhage, and early 70's improvisational recordings by Miles Davis, Woodsman has crafted aural offerings that are uniquely their own. - Lefse Records Woodsman - "Insects" http://woodsmanman.tumblr.com

Forged in the wake of their upcoming Rare Forms LP (out January 25th on Lefse ), "Time Lapse" is yet another one of Woodsman 's expansive Kraut tinted sound collages. Riddled with subdued synth notes and a near breathless, distant vocal tracking, every moving part is organically unified into 4 minutes and 45 seconds of psychedelic humidity. Featuring Brian Marcus (of Tjutjuna and Samurai Buck fame) this track is offered as the b-side on their newly released "Insects" 73 single. Available through the band's own Fire Talk Records on clear [...]

Woodsman are a weird band. I know that's the 'point' of these avant-garde wall-of-noise rock bands, but pioneers such as Animal Collective, Atlas Sound and maybe even Pocahaunted contain at least something that allows you to interpret what's going on and allow you to answer that weak-kneed question your 'less-cool' friends always seem to ask: 'it's just noise'. Denver, Colorado's (slash Brooklyn, New York according to their MySpace) Trevor, Eston, Mark and Dylan take you on a jam-packed musical journey screaming of primal soundscapes and deep jungle rhythms. Opener 'Insects' see the band [...]
Imagine if The Flaming Lips got a little more mellow, and a little more trippy. That was the first thought that popped into my head when trying to dissect the psychedelic rock of "Insects" by the Denver/Brooklyn band, Woodsman. Working to perfect the arpeggio, the rhythmic repetition of notes never goes stale. I attribute that fact to every element in...

I n a short blurb for yesterday's mix tape I made fun of Ian for how horribly he described a band. I need to make a point of saying that Ian has been consistently awesome in recommending me music over the tenure of our friendship. He's got pretty good taste! One of his most recent successes was turning me onto Woodsman. I think he initially sold me on their album Collages because it contained a track called "Dikembe Mutombo." Their psychedelic space/post-rock [...]

It's time to listen to a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. These are just a few of the songs that would get there own individual posts on here on GIMME TINNITUS, if I only had the time. Listen. Friday, December 17, 2010 There's a funny conundrum inside of me: I love, love a year ends list with all of my ever-beating heart but when the opportunity to create my own arises any and all music I enjoyed, loved, even slightly liked fades from my mind, leaving me scared and bewildered unable to construct an adequate representation of my year in music. Happens every year, no matter how prepared I attempt to make myself, how many lists I write (which to be honest has been very few this year) to bolster my memory [...]
