Today is Woody Guthrie's birthday. He was born on this day in 1912. This song was originally recorded in 1940, but I found it on an album called Dust Bowl Ballads. MP3 File yousendit

![Woody Guthrie::This Land is Your Land [Essay]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1835787_lg.jpg)
A re-post of an article originally published on AmericanaRoots.com as part of their "Power of A Song" feature from a couple years ago. I also published this one on cvilleMUSE last year for the 4th of July and figured I'd bring it back once again for this Independence Day. Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" says it better than just about anything around. If there was ever a song that truly deserves to be our nation's anthem then this is it. As for my parts in the essay below...they are what they are. Happy [...]
Time Changes Everything will make its world premiere tonight (7:30pm) at Liddy Doenges Theatre , 110 E 2nd St., in Tulsa. The two-act play, written by former Tulsa World entertainment writers Thomas Conner and John Wooley and directed by Vern Stefanic, imagines a world where the two most famous Oklahoma music figures of the 1930s and 1940s (Bob Wills and Woody Guthrie) had met - although they never did. The play shows Wills and Guthrie on their way up, and again after their respective careers have [...]

I guess I'm making the point here that if it weren't for Peter, Paul and Mary, I would never have known of Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger who follows. PP&M gave us all such a hunger to hear more. I am forever grateful. MP3 File yousendit

Too bad Woody Guthrie isn't around for the American Automobile Empire's Blue Monday - we'd have a new parody anthem by dinnertime. Lazarus machines aside, anti-bigwigs and folkies of all walks will want to snag My Dusty Road , a new box set boasting tracks of cleaner quality than the flurry of collections released as of late. Rounder Records culled this treasure trove from daughter Nora Guthrie, who rescued the forgotten tapes from a stranger's basement. Documentary filmmaker Peter Frumkin, who appropriated six of the recordings for his American Masters production of Woody Guthrie: [...]
The Flatlanders knew everything that was going to happen to them when they named their first album—available if at all in the U.S. only on 8-track— More A Legend Than A Band . Founders Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore all won significant fame on their own but they regroup on rare occasions just to see what happens. Their newest Hills and Valleys is out now on New West. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

One day after the Cain's Ballroom Music Museum was announced fund raising efforts , the Oklahoma Historical Society announced their plans for "Oklahoma Pop" , a museum about Oklahoma's contributions to music and popular culture. The museum will also be located in the Brady Village District near downtown Tulsa. "Tulsa is already home to great musicians who have worldwide success. The new museum will help us market Tulsa as a magnet for artists, tourists and conventions." - Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor Music, [...]

The Mermaid Avenue Demos A few week's ago Wilco released a timely download of Woody Guthrie's The Jolly Banker . You can grab the track in exchange for a suggested donation to the Guthrie Foundation and Archives at the Wilco website ; it's worth hearing for Nels Cline's lap steel alone. Wilco's involvement with the Woody Guthrie Archive began in 1997 when Billy Bragg recruited them to collaborate on Mermaid Avenue [...]

"Hard Times" by Woody Guthrie which clocks in at 9:41 . Hard times are often defined by competing and contradictory urges. There's the need to innovate and flaunt convention in the face of crisis at one end and the impulse to bundle up with the known and familiar at the other. That's human nature, baby. In 1940, the American public exercised both of these impulses at once, electing beloved incumbent Franklin Delano Roosevelt to an unprecedented third-term as President of the [...]
Angie Bruss of NewsOK.tv interviews Jeff Moore of the Oklahoma History Center about their rock and roll exhibit, Another Hot Oklahoma Night . After the jump, check out a long interview with The Collins Kids , as well as video from their performance at the VIP opening of the exhibit. (more...)

NHT has already posted about Mermaid Avenue , the ESSENTIAL collaboration between Wilco and Billy Bragg. Now there's a new twist on an old theme: Wilco covering a song Woody Guthrie actually recorded. 100% of proceeds from suggested donations of $2 per download will go directly to the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives . Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter and head of the foundation, asked the band to record the perfect comment on these troubled times: The Jolly Banker Now since it's a benefit thing NHT [...]

Wilco just recorded a cover of Woody Guthrie song "Jolly Banker" and they are giving the song away for free on their website . The only catch is that the band is asking that you make a donation of at least two dollars to the Woody Guthrie foundation . This song reminds me of the old days when Wilco had more twang to their sound and weren't a jam band yet. Wilco also recently put out a live DVD called "Ashes of American Flags" which you can buy here .
Piakkoin uuden levyn julkaiseva Wilco on jatkanut Woody Guthrien perinnön vaalimista. Tällä kertaa yhtye on coveroinut ajan henkeen sopivan The Jolly Banker -kappaleen. Mukana menossa on myös Leslie Feist joskaan ei laulamassa, vaan lisäperkurssioita hoitamassa. If you show me you need it, I'll let you have credit, I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. Just bring me back two for the one I lend you, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. Lataa kappale Wilcon sivuilta [...]

For a bunch of Irishmen, U2 has always been capable of throwing down a pretty darn soulful gospel jaunt in my book. Rattle and Hum is one of my favorite U2 eras (along with Achtung Baby . And maybe, oddly, Pop . I like Pop). My friend John just brought this 20-year-old U2 cover of Woody Guthrie's "Jesus Christ" to my attention, an mp3 I had in my iTunes library but had let settle to the [...]
