San Jose quartet Worker Bee bring a myriad of influences to their music. The subdued art rock of Liars clashes with Sonic Youth-style dissonance, often within the same song. Get a sample of the band's work with "No Dreams" from their latest album Tanglers. Worker Bee's Myspace

I just caught wind of Bay Area quartet Worker Bee and their single "No Dreams" from last summer's Tangler LP. It's one of those tracks that sort of catches you off guard, lulling you in with smokey vocals cautiously set atop the gentle picking of guitar and driven ably with simple bass drum kicks before totally annihilating you with such aural bedlam that they become impossible to ignore. After this moment a minute-and-a-half into the track it begins to be next to impossible to predict what directions the song will take next and what dark alleys it might [...]

ZACH THAT: We all have those introspective moments that really challenge every inch of emotion. It's impossible to force these, if you're being truthful, but I've found that walking in the cold with my headphones playing a little tune is the closest I've come to being able to create this precious moment. Getting to the point, there are few bands that can dig into the deeper parts of the mind… Worker Bee is one of them. Swirling guitars rest peacefully against strutting, not running, drum beats. The vocals on their album, "Tangler", float [...]

I don't know the guys in Worker Bee , nor have I ever communicated with them in any form, but I'm gonna go out on what I think is a pretty solid limb and say that they listened to a lot of Radiohead growing up. The quartet originally came together in San Jose, CA, in 2006 and, since then, has been making the kind of music that Mr. Yorke and company are best known for, largely gentle lyrics wrapped in a complex layered blanket of sound. Like the boys from Abingdon, the effect becomes haunting in a [...]

Well hello 2010, and how better to mark the return to the excitment of the working week with a little melancholia from San Jose's Worker Bee . Taken from their home recorded debut album 'Tangler', the haunting 'No Dreams' is an exercise in quiet/loud/quieter/louder explored to transcendent conclusion. This is a heads up about the aged post-rock. She is still alive, you see? Sure, it may seem like years since she was deemed a healthy! new! inspired! genre (because, let's face it, has been years) but the clock keeps on tickin' and those violinists keep on playin'. So, just like Blue Note, we're all apart of keepin' that funk alive. The main problem with the genre is that, despite everyone's best intentions, most of the bands under the post-rock banner sound practically identical. Long [...]
