The song list this year has a lot of crossover with the records list from yesterday. I suppose that is to be expected to a certain degree, but I get it's a little repetitive for me to be banging on about the same bands over and over again. Still, that's the nature of these lists, and I'm not going to throw in other things for the sake of it. 1. Los Campesinos! - A Heat Rash in the Shape of the Show Me State, or, Letters from Me to Charlotte [...]
World Atlas - Girl on a Boys' Bike World Atlas 's self-titled EP sounds like it is a lost Belle & Sebastian EP from the Jeepster years that has finally been released in the States after years of being a highly sought rarity. In fact, it sounds so much like Belle & Sebastian that it is a little unnerving. World Atlas is like a cover band that decided to step it up a little. Listening to the EP I feel a [...]
[ download ] World Atlas probably wants to get all of the jokes out of the way very quickly. Yes, they're all going to be arrested for grand theft. Yes, Stuart Murdoch called from 1996 and wants his band's sound back. Yes, World Atlas' music is so eerily reminiscent of old Belle & Sebastian records that they were served with a cease and desist. Still, there are worse things to be accused of than sounding like a facsimile of one of the most important acts of the [...]
You've heard World Atlas' latest single, "The Winter Stories," before. Maybe you even wrote it once, sitting on a plastic lawn chair next to some college buddies on the cracked concrete patio of the Brooklyn apartment you're all renting after graduating from art school. Clapping your hands, tapping your feet, someone's got his late grandfather's [...]

All Girl Summer Fun Band [...]

TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh man oh man oh man! This is it! I'm a nervous wreck between getting everything ready, dealing with some bike issues - really? bike issues the week of my ride ???? - and what I'm hoping is just congestion from pollen?? Canadian Ma-Ma was in town last night on their way back up Toronto from Florida, then we have a rider driving up from Colorado to participate tomorrow, etc, etc, etc...... yeah, I'm [...]

I'm sick of writing about music so I will tell you a story. S. & I have this tradition on Friday nights. Step 1: I take the bus/tube/taxi to his house at around 6-7 P.M. Step 2: Ring doorbell, take coat off, hug. Step 3: Head straight for the kitchen, where we officially kick-start the weekend with a glass of white wine and spend the next two hours drinking, munching on green olives, taking turns cooking, and mostly talk, talk, talk, talking about everything that happened during the week, the interesting articles, [...]

Lost in a metropolis of noise, dance music and indie rock, proper indie pop still manages to find a way to shine in New York City. With influences from the likes of Donavon and The Smiths, Brian Broux found a way to fuse these influences into an orchestral parade of pop goodness in his new project World Atlas . Joined by Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good To Me) and The Umbrella girls, World Atlas had recently released their debut EP on classic indie-pop label Magic Marker Records (The Manhattan Love Suicides, Fred [...]

Tonight I hit the kitchen to compile the second FensePost podcast, or FenseCast, while cooking up one of my signature dishes: spicy steak enchiladas with homemade sauce. For desert, a delicious slice of gluten free cake courtesy Andi (the girlfriend), whose photo you can see above. Unlike the first podcast, this one had a range of bands that stemmed into several genres rather than focusing on garage rock and pop. Within I reminisce on one of my favorite bands of all time, occasionally hover around bedroom pop, and pass along one imperative ingredient in my homemade enchilada [...]
Another batch of songs found in the mailbox. Still 1,917 mails left in the inbox. + Air Waves - Sweetness Real energetic indie pop (though the promo mail calls it " a medley of folk, rock, pop, and country " - did they mail out the wrong promo track?). And catchy too! + Wakey!Wakey! - Twenty Two + Andrew Watt and The Glory Glory - One Day [...]
Another post and another day dedicated to reducing the size of the inbox. Began the day having 2,105 mails in the inbox of which 140 have now been deleted and another 28 moved to a folder ingeniously named "pending". "Pending" meaning that the promo tracks have been downloaded and the mails filed so information can easily be found. But that you had probably already figured out yourself! This is a small sample I know, but a quick calculation indicates that out 6 mails only one will catch my interest, which unfortunately is pretty much as I expected. But enough about [...]

World Atlas is slated to give us their self-titled EP early next month on Magic Marker Records . The band is joined by Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good To Me) on guitar and The Umbrella Girls on hand-claps, tambourines and back-up vocals. Fronted ultimately by Brian Groux on vocals and guitar, World Atlas is what you'd expect from a band on Magic Marker - they dig The Smiths and Velvet Underground, and list as influences the various indie-pop and twee sub-cultures. "The Winter [...]
Brooklyn band World Atlas started in 2006 as a handful of four-track bedroom demos, sketches of songs mirroring stories afforded by the city. The idea culminated in a full ensemble including guest member Fred Thomas of Saturday Looks Good to Me on guitar and The Umbrella Girls, who often serve as the group's hand clappers, back-up singers and tambourine shakers. Their first self-titled EP is a
World Atlas Good morning! While doing my daily MySpace check-in this morning before class I decided to see what World Atlas , whom I've mentioned a couple times in the past, were up to these days. To my extreme delight, it turns out they're up to a lot! They have apparently got a record to be released by Magic Marker at some point — hopefully soon! The more immediate and exciting news however, is that they will be playing the NYC Popfest this year!!! with a string section!!! I couldn't say yay enough to times [...]

So Twee, So Local: Local Music Friday . Tell me...what is this Local Music Fridays? We played with World Atlas at the same show we played with Knight School and they were equally awesome. It just so happens that friend Fred Thomas also used to play with them. AND! Palmyra is playing again with them and Zoos of Berlin tomorrow night at [...]

Photography by Tsuru Okay, I begged and bugged you, over and over again, you guys really came through, as you know, but little did I know you'd get your money's worth this much on Saturday! Before we begin though, I want you to get "in the mood", the bicycle mood. So, first I need you to push play (while you download, of course) a lil' mixtape we put together... A bare-bones affair of bicycle themed songs to get your legs a-twitchin', your heart a-pumpin', and your [...]
World Atlas New fantastic pop songs alert! World Atlas are a new Brooklyn pop outfit featuring Fred Thomas of Saturday Looks Good To Me as well as a slew of other musicians. The songs on their MySpace point a pretty clear arrow towards Belle and Sebastian – and even more particularly, If You're Feeling Sinister . Though typically a lazy reference, I think in this case it truly hits the nail on the head and I really couldn't be more excited about it. Furthermore, I seriously doubt that anyone could really complain about [...]
