and if there is no happy end, then why can't we pretend? The day I met Jesse, he had just been hired as part time help at a certain new-age bookstore where Holly and I both worked; he was crouched over behind the front desk, sketching foreign-looking characters in a notebook. "what is that?" I asked. "oh, i'm creating my own language," was his reply. I knew in that instant that he was my kind of people. During our years there, we would have shift-long discussions about the purpose of music, photography [...]
World's Greatest Ghosts ::: photo by Abbey Simmons If it's the first Saturday of the month and you have nothing to do, you should always head on over to The Sunset Tavern for KEXP's Audioasis. Not only does the event benefit a local charity, you're also always bound to see a great band take the stage [...]

We left California and drove through the Mojave desert yesterday to meet up with the Grown Children last night in LAS VEGAS. Played the final night of the Neon Reverb Fest at The Bunkhouse. WGG went on first to a small, but enthusiastic crowd. But by the time Jared and the crew went on the house had filled up. They put on a great show as usual. Folks loved em! All the locals at the venue were really nice peeps and very excited about us Portland music kids. All in all a good show! Hotel rooms were full [...]

The show last night in Merced, CA at The Partisan was another smash! They couldn't get enough and had us play two sets before the night was done! We actually pulled it off pretty well considering we proceeded to get somewhat smashed before we learned they wanted us to play again after the other band. The crowd was nuts! Very very fun gig! Great staff, too. Made some new friends for sure. Shared the stage with a band from L.A. called Tigers Can Bite You. Nice folks! Late night burritos... Brandon pissed on his I think?? [...]

Surfer Blood ::: Photo by Ian Witlen We jealously watched from afar as fellow music writers and blogger tweeted their way through this year's CMJ in NYC, and one new name kept coming up: Surfer Blood (@SurferBlood). Portland, Ore., quintet World's Greatest Ghosts is set to release its debut, No Magic (Lucky Madison), on Tuesday. The band's members are said to be Dungeons & Dragons heads and use fantastical inspiration in their music, so the album features endearingly nerdy lyrics and song titles such as "Mazes & Monsters," "Potions" and "The Royal Court," [...]

For all the '80s revivalism that's occurred over the past few years, it's a little surprising how often bands shoot for and miss the holy intoxication of driving, anthemic guitars and whooshy, hooky keyboards. For every bad synth-pop knockoff you get a hundred young bands that claim all sorts of influences that are very rarely recognizable in the actual music. Come on, now—has Brandon Flowers even heard Gary Numan? It's tough to orchestrate old and new without crafting tunes that sound a bit dated (and jaded, coincidentally), and that's why I can't help but smile and absolutely [...]
