Words by Brendan Halloween is a strange holiday, when you think about it. For kids, it's that magical day when you can ask your neighbors for candy and they have to give you some! (Fuck that guy who gave you raisins.) For teens, it's that awkward day where you're too old to trick or treat but you're secretly jealous of kids and their candy so you make mischief and mayhem, instead. (Amiright?) For college students, it's an excuse to get drunk and dress ruhl slutty and get away with it, or an excuse to [...]
![YOUTH LAGOON, PETER BJORN AND JOHN, THE DODOS [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3714994_lg.jpg)
I know I say this every week, but seriously everyone, this might be one of the best weeks of live music here in NYC in recent history. We have The Dodos , Cut Copy , Young Man , and Youth Lagoon in town plus multiple shows from Peter Bjorn and John . Enjoy the warm weather early in the week and then Fall-like conditions towards the weekend, and, of course, enjoy yourself some great live music! The Dodos , The Luyas @ Music Hall of [...]

These days everybody and their mother are making music in bedrooms and basements. Having loftier aspirations, Portland, OR dream-pop act Blouse prefer the confines of a warehouse. And while it's just another room, the change in scenery makes all the difference in a track like "Videotapes", the lead single from the outfit's upcoming self-titled debut. The woozy, somber number has your standard synth baseline, but feels decidedly more romantic than offering's from the group's counterparts. And bonus points for those who notice a Unknown Mortal Orchestra-esque vibe; the two bands share [...]

( Editor's note: I'm going to go ahead and use "we" for the whole first paragraph here. It's not the editorial we, per se. I also do not have a tapeworm. The "we" below grabs my immediate social circle; I'm acting as their mouthpiece. The Cultural Attache to Lake County, Left Coast Impresario, Dr. Marvin Monroe and all the rest almost certainly share my feelings on the Cleveland Scene. So there you go.) Like many of you, we have our problems with the Cleveland Scene (not the scene itself, lame-ass [...]

A blistering live instrumental from the men of Woven Bones. My skin feels a little looser round me bones. These gents are signed to Hardly Art and I can't wait to see what comes roaring from their amps. Woven Bones - Sister Ray (Live on Radio K)
Photo Courtesy of | Bekah Cope The great Raven Sings The Blues turned us onto this great Woven Bones cover. On K Radio, they got to fulfill their obvious Velvet Underground sonic boner fantasy by doing a really ripping version of Sister Ray. And it's times like these when I remember that I actually like [...]

Woven Bones just sent over this oilslicked gem of a cover of VU's "Sister Ray". The trio laid it down for a live session at Minnesota's Radio K last year and it boils the classic jam down to a three minute scorcher that chugs and screams in a way that's perfectly representative of the Bones' live show. Forgoing the vocals, the band instead focuses on the guitar fury that lies at the heart of this song. Makes us eager to hear what new gems are in store from them, but for now turn this one up loud and set it [...]

Hardly Art is going to have a mammoth year in 2011. I can just feel it in my bones. La Sera, Fergus & Geronimo, Woven Bones, and who knows what those tricksters have up there sleeves. This video feels is like a scrap-booked version of your great-grandma's first tropical vacation. Take that as you will.
