When The Future Of Rock N' Roll passed away a couple years ago, this time for good, I had to make a conscious choice to mourn it, but to move on. I think if you ask the other staffers who were on board when it happened, they might feel the same way. It wasn't exactly a clean break, but that's the best way I can describe it, like something you loved, which is now dead and gone. Don't get me wrong, I miss my show and the station terribly, more than I thought I would when it [...]
A few days ago I wrote a post about a track called Boeing 737 by The Low Anthem. In the lyrics of that song The Low Anthem intertwines the tragedy of the World Trade Center terrorist attack with hanging out in a bar with Philippe Petit (the man who strung a high wire between the twin towers). In that track there is a certain beauty found in what is ultimately a melancholy and utterly tragic experience. It takes a unique talent to capture the bittersweet emotions of certain events and forge from that fire something beautiful and worthy. [...]
It all began with Paloma wondering about a co-worker at the record store where we met. A bit of sleuthing and I had stumbled on a cybertrail that included Scandanavian Elvis impersonators, Presley's optomitrist, a dodgy German politician, and a military general from Southeast Asia. The bizarre cast of associates of our former associate has left me bumfoozled. As I examine the sketchy characters in my mind, it almost makes sense. I can imagine this former co-worker getting involved in some scenario resembling a movie by the Coen brothers. And each time [...]

Paloma and I watched about an hour of that wretched flick Mannequin in which Andrew McCarthy plays a window dresser who becomes amorous with a mannequin...it's dreadful. We happened across it, several months ago, while channel-surfing one morning, and we stopped. It was as though the universe had thrown down the gauntlet and we felt compelled to push ourselves to watch as much as possible. (twisted, yes, but hasn't everyone done this?) But, I've hit Pretty In Pink tonight and I realize that it's difficult for me not to think [...]
WOXY is dead and gone, but in the years I was there, we always spun Halloween themed stuff during this time of the year. I threw this RDIO playlist together real fast, and it represents alot of the music we would play for Halloween. Enjoy! Subscribe to the comments for this post? Digg this! [...]

Was it just two weeks ago that the air conditioner was humming as summer's last gasp pushed us into one final round of temperatures in the mid-90s? (it was - I was there) But the weather has respected the official onset of autumn as well as the arrival of October. The air is cool and crisp and the sun is providing just enough warmth to allow us to throw every window in the treehouse open. Humans and animals are delighted as the humans drink their coffee and the animals sleep on the window [...]
Enjoy the just-released performance of 'Floating Vibes' below. RIP WOXY. MP3: Surfer Blood - Floating Vibes

If you happen to follow any music bloggers or record nerd on Twitter you may have noticed a major bump in traffic on Saturday morning. I too follow a slew of my peers and was keeping tabs on folks and what they happened to score on Record Store Day . Just before noon I noticed a Tweet from WOXY's Shiv lamenting not getting his hands on a copy of Elvis Costello & the Attraction's re-issue of the "Live at Hollywood High" 73. Having [...]
There are not many Scottish bands that have played more gigs that We Were Promised Jetpacks in the past 9 months. And we should know because we've listed them all. Following a sold out coast to coast US tour, the band are heading out to Europe once again. When the band were in Austin last month, [...]

I've noted on a number occasions what a wonderous discovery it was the day that I happened across the then-new WOXY in autumn of '83. Suddenly my musical universe expanded to include acts like Talking Heads, XTC, and Aztec Camera. These less than mainstream bands and artists wandered into the room and sat down next to Journey, Def Leppard, and Duran Duran like strangers entering some cantina in a dusty border town. Everyone held their breath, expecting trouble. It seem only a matter of time 'til someone looked at someone [...]
Last week Vic Galloway and Matthew Young joined me and 13 Scottish bands at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Video highlights from all four days are below including new clips from Twin Atlantic, The Law, Fangs, St Deluxe, Trembling Bells, Broken Records and one of the last WOXY Sessions featuring The Jetpacks. Video [...]
:: I got a tip about WOXY closing up shop before it happened but decided to hold off on reporting it since Look Mexico was guest editing (and doing a hell of a job at it) on Tuesday. Needless to say, the public outcry has been big. And while the station being saved again for the fifth time doesn't seem likely, there is at least talk . :: Famed music photography Jim Marshall (he did the Johnny Cash middle finger photo, among others) passed away on Tuesday at [...]

WOXY.com , which bills itself as the future of rock and roll has suspended operations because of lack of funding. "Due to current economic realities and the lack of ongoing funding for WOXY's operations, we've been forced to suspend our live broadcasts as of March 23rd. We're continuing to explore options to keep The Future of Rock and Roll alive," the Internet station's site reads. This, of course, is very disheartening news. Let's hope the station can get up and running again. The video below of Besnard Lakes performing And This is What We Call Progress [...]

Filed under: News For local residents in Austin, Texas, Monday morning may have felt something like "the day the music died" -- the hangover after SXSW . A couple thousand bands that filled every corner of the downtown area with sound last week are gone now, off to tour the nation or the world or return to normal life in one way or the other. But music fans from coast to coast felt a frosty silence coming from Austin on Tuesday morning when WOXY -- the uber-hip web-based indie radio station [...]
