This is the next installment of our series in iTunes playlists. Our last playlist was Kanye West's. The iTunes Playlist: Jason Schwartzman The character Jason Schwartzman played in The Darjeeling Limited, which you can download for free using BitTorrent here, is basically himself. Presumably instead of writing thinly veiled autobiographical stories, he makes music Bon Iver-style by [...]

The Sapiens Genre: Indie / Electro / Rock From: Chicago, Illinois United States Synchronicity is the experience of two or more events which occur in a meaningful manner, but which are causally un-related (thanks Wikipedia). Todays post comes courtesy of a huge dollop of synchronicity. Earlier this week The Devil sat down to watch the story of Stiff Records [...]

The Proclaimers have just covered this song. I suppose it suits them but it's a straight cover and rather uninspired. Andy Davies, sidekick to Jonathan Ross on his Radio 2 show, was putting together a tribute album where a number of artists covered this song, but I don't think it will ever see the light of day. There's only one version you need to be honest. Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World ( iTunes )

I'm finally going to get the chance to see my most anticipated movie of the year tomorrow: Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited . I've heard mostly good and some bad things about the film, so I'm going into it optimistically especially since I love all of his films. One thing I've heard is that the movie features Apple products prominently, and Hotel Chevalier was released exclusively in iTunes, so it makes since that they would do a Celebrity Playlist. Owen Wilson isn't involved for obvious reasons, but Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman [...]
The tenth edition of Short Story Saturday features Anton Chekhov's late period story "The Lady With The Dog," in which he uses internal monologues and a deep knowledge of human psychology to craft one of short fiction's most remarkable character changes. Here's a brief excerpt from "The Lady With The Dog," with the full text and mp3s after the jump: Anna Sergeyevna and he loved each other like people very close and akin, like husband and wife, like tender friends; it seemed to them that fate itself had meant them for one another, and [...]
Comin' atcha first thing every Monday morning, it's The Pony Track, a super-fantastic short distance dedication to BadmintonStamps Collective founding member and internationally renown symbol for musical excellence Aaron "Pony" Child. No fancy links, no clever write-ups, 'cause these awesome songs don't need no splainin'. So c'mon, ride the pony!
The wife and I don't see as many movies as we used to. The arrival of kids changed everything. Time became limited, baby sitting options aren't always available, blah blah blah. Anyway, I've been lucky to see a few good movies over the last month or two, both at the theatre and on DVD. Movie soundtracks can be hit or miss. The big blockbusters tend to be all bombast and corporate rock. The

"It's not you, really, it's me." Apologies for being MIA lately. The usual reasons: work has me working, my free time has been costly, and then there's this little thing known as an impending move. Posts will be sporadic for the next few weeks. To make up for it, here's a massive jukebox upchuck full of favorite songs of late. Dusty Springfield – "So Much Love" I've been listening to so much Dusty In Memphis lately, ever since my trip to Louisville. (Must have been the "Southern" exposure.) [...]

This is a post I've been wanting to do for a while. A few months back as I was listening to "Beer for Breakfast" by the Replacements, I realized that there are a lot of wonderfully stupid songs out there ¬– songs whose subject matter is so crass, juvenile, and/or moronic that they induce guffaws and/or grins. Below are some that I found. If any one of you can think of others, let me know and I'll try to post 'em. STUPID SONG INSIGHT!!! Note that [...]

Spoon "The Book I Write" Wreckless Eric "Whole Wide World" Stranger Than Fiction soundtrack at Newbury Comics. (and at iTunes .) This is a little different. I want to talk about a movie, Stranger Than Fiction , I saw over the weekend, which is my favorite film this year. I think you should see it too, although maybe this post is more for people who've already seen the [...]

I'm not quite sure how to begin on this one as today's subject is one of those real living legends that has accompanied me in my life since those vibrant days back in '77. The word legend I do not use lightly, some might consider him to be more of a cult artist but is there really a difference between the two terms? He is chummy with Jonathan Ross, he is a fan of artists as diverse as Joe Meek and Donovan, he symbolised the early days of the classic indie label Stiff Records, he has authored at least one [...]
I have a good friend who was in a great late 80's & early 90's SF band called Bomb... They are just awfully under appreciated and more so each day, and perhaps rightly so... but I thought I'd share a few tracks that were faves of mine... Their music was dark, silly, evil, booming and loud... and aside from all those good things...despite even a year or so of major label status, remains relatively obscure... So here's some Bomb mp3'z below for the hundreds of y'all that stop by each day... [...]

Well, this guy’s not gonna generate much traffic for the site, but what the hell. Wreckless Eric was a product of the great Stiff Records, which in the early punk years was responsible for such acts as Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Madness, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Any Trouble, Graham Parker, and the Damned. While all of these acts bore the distinctive Stiff stamp, each had its own distinctive quality â€" and none was more distinctive than Eric’s. Think Tiny Tim for alternative music. The man made Bob Dylan sound like a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. [...]
Our sometime Sundays collection of stuff off of YouTube takes its inspiration from the recent Stiff night on BBC4, with some Stiff artists, although not always from their time on the label: Tracey Ullman - Breakaway - keyworded "fetish" on account of the leather skirts Tracey Ullman - Terry - video of the cover... Kirsty MacColl - Terry - ... video of the original version Plasmatics - Butcher Babies - NSFW video Elvis Costello - Alison/Pump It Up - filemd on Super8 during [...]
