Apparently I was excited to see Rich Aucoin play Sonic Boom 's CMW 2012 sessions. But due to a illness, he had to cancel. With that Halifax's Writer's Strike was the last minute act to fill in. Surprised to see the guys of Wildlife at this session. I really enjoyed their set. High energetic indie rock tunes. At the end they passed out flags and got everyone waving them. Favorite part of the set was the female keyboardist holding up signs [...]

I know, I know. Lists are annoying and trying to assign rankings and value to art is subjective at best. That's why these records - 25 from releases that really made an impact on me in '11 - aren't branded with any type of distinction other than "favorite." These are records, not songs, that warmed my heart, eased my pain, inspired my creativity or simply helped tap my toe or nod my head. They never asked for anything more than a listen, and I was more than happy to oblige. That being said, there [...]
What did you get for Christmas, or buy on Boxing Day? I'd love to know! Anyways among the busy-ness of the holidays I want to introduce you to Halifax's Writer's Strike. With such energetic tunes, I'm sure we'll hear more about them as the new year approaches. New York City is part of a 3 song set you can grab from Bandcamp . Writer's Strike- New York City

Halifax band Writers' Strike just released a new EP by the title of Stay Down . Check out the title track here . facebook

Monday's post about Rich Aucoin has led me down the path to another Halifax-based indie-pop powerhouse that's starting to make the touring rounds. Meet Writer's Strike : songwriters Darryl Smith (who tours as a member of Aucoin's four-piece band), Conor Hancey and Matt Davidson (yes there's three!), along with synth player Amy Bollivar and drummer Tynan Dunfield. Clever melodies, saccharine harmonies, and chest-swelling indie-rock anthems are the order of the day on this picket line protest against mediocre music. Writer's Strike are offering a sneak peak at their upcoming full-length debut with a [...]

Hopefully you read the Ack's post on Ox's new record Tuco , not least because it's a great record, but also because the Ack's intro was a great bit of self-affirmation regarding the aims of this here site. The second big point he mentioned, "championing a band" struck a chord with me, because it's something I haven't been doing much of lately. This is mainly due to my work busy-ness over the last couple months, but also because as the site's "rap guy", I just don't cover a ton of bands in depth. [...]

Samantha Cardow With festivals come hard choices, and for this year's edition of Canadian Musicfest , getting underway with a handful of events tonight and in earnest as of tomorrow, I am choosing to eschew the club-hopping-ness that typically comes with these sorts of fest and largely plant myself in one place for each evening. Hard choice or lazy choice? A little of both. But just because I am staying put doesn't mean that I recommend others do the same. So by way of festival preview, here's a list of stuff that [...]
So that is what happened to First Aid Kit, they turned into Writer's Strike. What a better name, not a great name, but much better. The free single they've released though (to celebrate the name change?) is pretty rad. Check it out after the jump along with new tour dates. Tour Dates: Friday, October 22nd [...]

Walt (above) is shown not soaking wet for the first time in four seasons. I've been promising for a week to write about this season's eighth episode of LOST , the mini-season finale before the show returns with five more episodes (and a true season finale) starting at 10:00pm April 24th. Apparently Grey's Anatomy will take over LOST 's 9:00pm slot, which is complete and utter bullshit because the former show sucks and LOST is the best show on television -- but that's not important right now. Today, [...]
Really though he's the best comedian around. Hands down. This is his new video supporting the writers. David Cross , Genius , Hollywood , Writers Strike
